A Light On The Hill by Connilyn Cossette
My name is Moriyah. I was born during the wilderness wanderings to a Hebrew mother and an Egyptian father.
I was kidnapped and taken to Jericho right before the walls fell but before I was rescued I was branded by an evil priestess and therefore I hide my face behind a veil to avoid scrutiny and mocking by others. I live in Shiloh with my father who owns a vineyard and love spending time with my blind friend Ora and my little friend Eitan, whose job it is to chase the birds away from the grapes, but otherwise I keep to myself in my home creating delicious meals. |
My veil. I’ve lived behind it for seven years now and it’s become a part of me. Although most people are kind to me, I’ve endured some brutal mocking and to protect myself and avoid the shame to my family and questions about the Canaanite gods burned into my face, the veil is a necessary shield.
Revealing my ruined face to strangers, especially the man my father has chosen for me to marry.
#4. What is your greatest strength and your greatest flaw? I love to cook and provide meals for people that are hurting or grieving, although I usually send the food along with someone else and stay in my home. My greatest flaw is that I am so bound up in how people see me that I have hidden away the best parts of me and it has affected my relationships with my family and friends and most importantly, with Yahweh. |
#5. If you could change one thing in your life, past or present, what would it be?
Without a question it would be avoiding the horrific branding I endured at the hands of the priestess in Jericho, it stripped away so much of who I was and I am not sure that I will ever find that hopeful girl again.
That we are made by a loving God who sees the core of us, not the outward appearance. And that regardless of whether we’ve pushed God away or how high the walls between us seem to be, He is always there loving us, ready to lavish us with grace and mercy. And that even after devastation, among the ashes of pain and sorrow, new life can and will thrive again.
Tsk, tsk. No spoilers! You’ll just have to wait until Shelter of the Most High for answers to those questions…… ;)
Do not allow the hurts of the past, or your own insecurities, to cause you to hide who you were created to be.
