Austin paced the space around Jack’s pen. Dr. Lawson couldn’t come any too soon.

Jack coughed again and took a raspy breath. Austin had made a wise move—isolating him in the unused section of the horse barn.

As if Jack needed a detailed explanation, Austin peered into the horse’s eyes. “You’ve got the stall all to yourself. I don’t want any of the other animals near you since what you have is probably contagious.” Austin refilled Jack’s water bucket and set it in his stall. “Hey, buddy. You’re my favorite horse, you know. I want to see you get well.” He chuckled. Jack probably didn’t understand a word he said.

Twenty minutes later, the sound of a motor from the main highway informed him the vet had arrived. Thank You, Lord. She’s here.

June Foster

An award-winning author, June Foster is a retired teacher with a BA in Education and a MA in counseling. June began writing Christian romance in 2010 as she and her husband traveled the US in their RV. Her adventures provide a rich source of information for her novels. Interview with Lori

1. Which author has most influenced your own writing?
That’s a good question. And I’d have to say it depends on what I’m writing. They say to read what you write, so I read a lot of contemporary romance. I read other genres, as well, but that’s the one I focus on so I can learn from those better than I am. I love Melissa Tagg, who writes some heavy subject matter at times yet always with a bit of humor. I absolutely loved Becky Wade’s Misty River Romance Series, and Nicole Deese is another one whose writing resonates with me. My new series that debuts in October is a romantic suspense series, so I’ve been reading a lot of Robin Patchen and Dani Pettrey. My series will lean more heavily on romance than anything really dark, but they will all have a suspense thread, so I’ve still learned a lot from those two authors about weaving an intricate suspense plot.

2. Tell us something funny, sad, embarrassing, whatever, that happened involving this book.
I needed my characters to meet, obviously, and in chapter one. But I didn’t really want to do the quintessential meet-cute. It wasn’t exactly meet-ugly, but Hunter didn’t leave the best impression on Shannon. A later meeting went a bit better, until an untimely phone call put him back at square one. But if the reader will give him the benefit of the doubt and read on to chapter two, I think they’ll see a more tender side of Hunter.

3. Tell us a little about yourself, your family, friends.
I’ve been married to my husband for 32 years, and we have one daughter, a son-in-love, and a grand-dog, all of whom we absolutely adore. Our daughter was five when we moved from Gilbert, Arizona, to Georgetown, Texas, just a smidge north of Austin, in 2005. And this is where I found home. I love it here and don’t plan to ever leave. We may move up to the Dallas/Fort Worth area at some point to be closer to our daughter and her husband, but that’ll be a bit in the future. I’m an only child, but my husband has two sisters and a brother, and I consider them all my siblings. I love them with my whole heart as well as their spouses and kiddos. The “kids” are all adults now, and when we get together for our family reunion every two years, it’s a blast seeing them all together. Especially now that babies are coming. As far as my friends go, most of my closest friends are also writers. We just get each other. I don’t know how else to explain it. We can be a bit of a strange lot, so it’s nice to spend time with folks who understand why we have voices and people running around in our heads. My husband and I also lead a small group from church, and we’ve been with these couples for coming on ten years now. We love them with all our hearts, and I’d say they’re our closest friends.

4. If you could change one thing in your life, past or present, what would it be?
Oh, I think we all have things we wish we could go back and change. There are things I’d do differently as a wife and mother, maybe have taken a different career path to find something I really loved doing. But the thing I wish I could change the most is to start this writing gig a lot younger. I was in my late 30’s when I finally started pursuing my dream of being an author, and while that’s not old, I wish I’d started a decade before. Then, in 2009, our family went through a difficult time after a job lay-off, and I quit writing. For eleven years! When I came back to it in 2020, so much had changed, and I had to do a bit of catching up. But I’m so happy I did the hard work and stuck with it because now I’m living the dream. Literally.

5. What one piece of advice would you like to give readers?
Don’t be me. Don’t quit. Ever. Stick with it, if it’s truly your calling and your passion. It’s not easy. You’ll have times you wonder if you have what it takes or if you’re just fooling yourself. You’ll have times you hate that manuscript you’ve been writing and rewriting for a year, maybe two years, maybe more. But stick with it. You’re learning from every word you put to paper. You’ll have times your characters quit talking to you and you have no idea where to go next. But keep writing, even if it’s garbage that will never make it into the book. Write a conversation with them. Put them in an awkward, silly, or dangerous situation and see how they handle it. They’ll come back, I promise, because they want their story told as badly as you want to write it. All that to say—DON’T. GIVE. UP ... EVER. If you’re called to this journey as a Christian writer, God will walk with you through it. But the enemy doesn’t want you to succeed. He doesn’t want that message going out into the world, so he’ll use all the weapons at his disposal to thwart you. But you’re the one God called to send it. To tell this story. To touch lives and bring glory to Him. Remember who you are. Remember Who called you. And DON’T. GIVE. UP.

As soon as Shannon Trent showed up in chapter one of my debut novel, Love’s True Calling, I knew she had a story. That there was something underneath all that joy and spunk that haunted her. That she felt she had to hide.

Although born to a life of privilege, she doesn’t want her name to be the measure of her worth. Determined to live a simpler life, she dials in to her faith, only wanting to be and do whatever God says she should be and do.

When God gave me this story concept, I was a little intimidated. Would I be able to convey the heart of a good man who didn’t have faith? Would I be able to flesh out a woman who had an abundance of faith yet still harbored shame from her past?

But as I started writing this story, I fell in love with these two and their journey to discover the true measure of their worth … and the true measure of love.

Interview with Christina

#1. What was the inspiration for this book?
Another Outer Banks Christmas is the third in a series based on the, well, Outer Banks of North Carolina. The story line started when my family and I visited my sister at her vacation home on Hatteras in 2019. While there, we took the ferry over to Ocracoke Island. The island was still battered and recovering from Hurricane Dorian. I wanted to write stories supporting the very resilient people who live there.

#2. What drew you to write in this particular genre?
I was writing in secular fantasy and not quite making it to publication—finalled in contests, worked with New York publishers, but never making it to publication. Then, my mentor, Eloisa James, said “why aren’t you writing inspirational romance since your faith is so important to you?” Good question. I switched focus and have never been happier.

#3. Do you have favorite character(s) in this book?
Believe it or not, I connected most to the hero. He had some serious Daddy issues and so did I. His father abandoned him, mine did not. Still, I appreciate the chance to consider what it might be like, what it would do to your opinion of yourself, if your father chose not to be a part of your life. Fiction is so valuable for the chance to vicariously live other people’s lives and explore their possible stories.

#4. Tell us a little about yourself, your family, friends.
So many great questions—I personally love getting to know authors as people! I’m a psychology professor and department chair at Charleston Southern University in Charleston, South Carolina. I grew up in the farmhouse where my father was born and died. I’ve been married to my college sweetheart for 39 years and we have two grown children. We also have a cat whose name used to be Bella because we were told she was a girl and six months later, the vet said, nope he’s a boy.

Christmas in July!

Another Outer Banks Christmas is the third book in a series—but the second book hasn’t been published yet! Good thing I wrote this one as a stand-alone.

So…here’s the story behind the story.

In June 2019, I saw an email requesting Christmas novellas by the end of the month. I buckled down and wrote Christmas Confusion in three weeks. Then, excited about the story, I wrote a full-length novel for the second installment in my Charleston series, Sweet Summer. However, my publisher at the time, Anaiah Press, said they had a full slate for 2020 and no space for a novel.

Rather than not publish anything for a year, I looked around me for inspiration and found it at my sister’s vacation home on Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks, North Carolina. We first visited after Christmas in December 2019. Hurricane Dorian had devastated nearby Ocracoke Island in September. Shocked by the damage and the businesses still boarded up, some of which never reopened, I wanted to tell the story of the brave people who live there—thus, Christmas on Ocracoke was born.

Now, I always seem to fall in love with my characters and want to get to know them better—and their families. Hope of Hatteras (to be published later this year, date TBA) is the story of the hero of Ocracoke’s sister. Another Outer Banks Christmas is the story of the hero of Hatteras’ best friend.

To finish out the story—why hasn’t Hatteras been published? My publisher closed its doors last November and I’m working on my way to being self-published. My book was supposed to be published a week before they closed. Life always has surprises in store, doesn’t it?

Thank the Lord we have a God who doesn’t change.

Another Outer Banks Christmas is a sweet romance that addresses the challenges our missionaries and their families face, plus, on the other side, the fact that we don’t have to be perfect to be loved—by God or other people.

My Review

They took it all, now she must save them....

When I finished The Chaos Grid I thought it was a one off. Though, I certainly wanted more of the fascinating characters and futuristic Texas, I figured the story was complete. And then I saw The Crier Stone and it immediately shot way up and took a top spot spot my rather long want to read list.

And, oh, did it live up to expectation and then some! Lyndsey Lewellen deposited me back into her exquisitely crafted world of 2-headed birds, domed cities, teleportation, stunning tech, holographic clothing, robots, and oddly enough, purple cats. I couldn't put it down. All of the things that I needed to get done? Yeah, none of those things were actually done. Oh well, I had something more important to do. I had to 'help' Juniper save the Plex, her friends, and maybe her own life.

While this book is intended for a YA audience, probably middle to older end of the scale, as 30-something reader I still loved it. As I mentioned before, Lyndsey Lewellen is very skillful in her worldbuilding. She gives enough description to immerse the reader while still allowing the reader's own imagination to soar while visualizing each page. I was quite invested in this story as well. The wild differences in landscape between the desolate Grid and the glittering, though vicious, Plex provide the perfect backdrop for Juniper's emotional struggles as she grapples with 2 things that we humans find difficult – forgiveness and mercy. Wrapped within this futuristic fantasy novel is the retelling of a well known story and I found that reimagining to be very well done indeed.

Full of danger and adventure, The Crier Stone was an excellent read that I wholeheartedly give 5 stars. It is easily one of my favorite reads so far for this year. Now that I've read it, and The Chaos Grid, I will be intensely anticipating more from this author. Pretty much, ifI see her name on it I will read it....

Justice. Mercy. Grace.

Teen girls in my youth group hear these words often. Maybe that’s because the simplest words are sometimes the hardest to define—and even harder to live out. So, we talk about them a lot. In fact, we go over their meanings so often that when our church’s youth pastor asked the main group to define grace one Wednesday night, girl after girl turned to look at me sitting in the back. They knew the answer. I was proud.

But knowing that justice is getting what you deserve, mercy is not getting what you deserve, and grace is getting what you don’t deserve is only half the battle. The real challenge? Learning when—and how—to apply them.

In The Crier Stone, the conclusion to The Chaos Grid duology, Juniper Conway comes face to face with God’s mercy in direct conflict with her sense of justice. We love it when He relents in His wrath toward us. But what happens when He stays His hand against our enemies?

The people of Juniper’s futuristic Texas experience justice daily for the sins of the past. In their attempt to fix the climate, their ancestors instead turned the world into a wasteland. Now, the last remnants of civilization hide away in domed cities, clinging to their technology like a drug—willing to sacrifice anything for the next upgrade. The government forbids advanced tech outside the domes, trapping its people inside their artificial paradise.

But a life of confinement and convenience is hardly the justice Juniper wants for those who orphaned her. And when visions confirm God’s call for her to save the worst of the domed cities from destruction, she rages at His mercy. Of all the people He could choose to show kindness to her enemies, why would He choose her?

If she had His power, she would do things differently.
