#1. What was the inspiration for this book?
Another Outer Banks Christmas is the third in a series based on the, well, Outer Banks of North Carolina. The story line started when my family and I visited my sister at her vacation home on Hatteras in 2019. While there, we took the ferry over to Ocracoke Island. The island was still battered and recovering from Hurricane Dorian. I wanted to write stories supporting the very resilient people who live there.

#2. What drew you to write in this particular genre?
I was writing in secular fantasy and not quite making it to publication—finalled in contests, worked with New York publishers, but never making it to publication. Then, my mentor, Eloisa James, said “why aren’t you writing inspirational romance since your faith is so important to you?” Good question. I switched focus and have never been happier.

#3. Do you have favorite character(s) in this book?
Believe it or not, I connected most to the hero. He had some serious Daddy issues and so did I. His father abandoned him, mine did not. Still, I appreciate the chance to consider what it might be like, what it would do to your opinion of yourself, if your father chose not to be a part of your life. Fiction is so valuable for the chance to vicariously live other people’s lives and explore their possible stories.

So many great questions—I personally love getting to know authors as people! I’m a psychology professor and department chair at Charleston Southern University in Charleston, South Carolina. I grew up in the farmhouse where my father was born and died. I’ve been married to my college sweetheart for 39 years and we have two grown children. We also have a cat whose name used to be Bella because we were told she was a girl and six months later, the vet said, nope he’s a boy.

Christmas in July!
Another Outer Banks Christmas is the third book in a series—but the second book hasn’t been published yet! Good thing I wrote this one as a stand-alone.
So…here’s the story behind the story.
In June 2019, I saw an email requesting Christmas novellas by the end of the month. I buckled down and wrote Christmas Confusion in three weeks. Then, excited about the story, I wrote a full-length novel for the second installment in my Charleston series, Sweet Summer. However, my publisher at the time, Anaiah Press, said they had a full slate for 2020 and no space for a novel.
Rather than not publish anything for a year, I looked around me for inspiration and found it at my sister’s vacation home on Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks, North Carolina. We first visited after Christmas in December 2019. Hurricane Dorian had devastated nearby Ocracoke Island in September. Shocked by the damage and the businesses still boarded up, some of which never reopened, I wanted to tell the story of the brave people who live there—thus, Christmas on Ocracoke was born.
Now, I always seem to fall in love with my characters and want to get to know them better—and their families. Hope of Hatteras (to be published later this year, date TBA) is the story of the hero of Ocracoke’s sister. Another Outer Banks Christmas is the story of the hero of Hatteras’ best friend.
