My Review

Neither of them quite know what they are in for....

As Christmas decorations start going up, carols begin making their appearance on the radio and in stores, and peppermint everything is on the menu. For readers it's time to settle back, inside where it's warm, of course, and dive into a little seasonal reading. Which, is exactly what I did over the wet Thanksgiving holiday.

His Frontier Christmas Family was such a sweet historical romance and a totally fun read! Regina Scott has crafted a delightful tale of love and family, of finding forgiveness and finding a place to call home. I truly fell in love with the heroine's precocious little brothers as they provided some real laugh-out-loud moments with their crazy antics.

This is my first book in this series, and by this author, but I don't think it will be my last. I enjoyed my jaunt with the Murphy and Wallin clans! If you are looking for a good Christmas story to read this holiday season check out His Frontier Christmas Family.

Regina Scott started writing novels in the third grade. Thankfully for literature as we know it, she didn't actually sell her first novel until she had learned a bit more about writing such as vocabulary, sentence structure, and plot. After numerous short stories and articles in magazines and trade journals, she got serious about her novel writing. The Unflappable Miss Fairchild was her first novel to be published (March 1998).

Besides her novels, Regina Scott has had published three Regency novellas ("The June Bride Conspiracy" in His Blushing Bride, "Sweeter Than Candy" in A Match for Mother, and "A Place by the Fire" in Mistletoe Kittens). Two of her novels, A Dangerous Dalliance and The Twelve Days of Christmas, have been translated into German. A Dangerous Dalliance and The Incomparable Miss Compton have been translated into Italian. Starstruck and Perfection have been translated into Dutch.

Regina Scott and her husband are the parents of two sons. They reside in the Tri-Cities of southeast Washington State and are members of the Church of the Nazarene. Born in 1959 and raised in the Seattle area, Regina Scott is a graduate of the University of Washington. She comes by her writing talent naturally--both her parents are excellent writers in their vocations as teacher and electrical technician. Her mother envisioned the plot for "Sweeter Than Candy," the novella which was written as a tribute to her.

Regina Scott is a devout Christian and a decent fencer; owns a historical, fantasy, and science fiction costume collection that currently takes up over a third of her large closet; and has been known to impersonate an independent consultant specializing in risk communication.

Susan Sleeman has quickly become one of my favorite go-to romantic suspense authors. If a book has her name on it I know it will be good and I'll enjoy every minute spent immersed within the pages. Cold Terror was all that and more. Plenty of romance and nail-bitingly tense moments are packed into more of a novella length story. A fairly quick read Cold Terror will have you gasping for breath and itching for more of Susan Sleeman's thrilling suspense. I definitely can't wait for the next book in this series to come out!

How long does it usually take to finish writing a book?
It depends on when my deadline is, haha. If I have no deadline, I will take a leisurely year or two (A Time to Die took me three years!), but when I’m on a set deadline, I will do it within that deadline (hopefully.) And that usually means somewhere between 4-6 months for a first draft. (EEP!) This is tough sometimes, but with each book I get closer to finding my rhythm of writing and how to meet those deadlines with confidence about my book.

What does a typical writing day look like for you?
I love writing days!!! So when I get a day fully committed to writing, then it looks like this:

Wake up and celebrate because it’s a writing day!
Dress in something comfy and cozy and writerly
Walk a mile(ish) to my coffee shop
Order the world’s perfect chai….and probably a biscotti.
Write/plot/brainstorm until the coffee shop closes (2pm)
Walk back home and, if the inspiration is still there, I continue. But usually then I shift to other non-writerly things.

It’s glorious.

Are you a full-time author or do you have another job?
Well, as of this January (2018), I will be a full-time author! WHAT. A. DREAM!!! For the past almost-five years, I’ve run my own editing business and loved it. But I’m stepping out to focus instead on writing and speaking at conferences. I’m also finishing up a part-time ministry position at the end of this year. A lot of exciting changes!

What is the craziest thing you’ve done in the name of research?
That really depends on your definition of crazy. Because I hit all levels. Climbing a cliff-face, going through the Panama Canal in a sailboat, eating cattail stalks, driving a dogsled….research is basically my excuse to go out and be adventurous. I love doing as many researchy things as I can!

Cake or Cookies?
Cookies. Always. Forever. I’m actually part-Oreo. I am so not a cake person except for my wedding cake which was hand made by a friend and filled with jams made from wild berries from the valley I grew up in. That should totally be in a book, it’s so amazing.

Early Bird or Night Owl?
Afternoon crow. Can’t write in the morning and can’t write in the evening (that’s when I do my brainstorming.) I don’t stay up late and I can’t for the life of me get in the habit of getting up early. So…I’m usually pretty well-rested. ;-)

Bible verse to share:
My current favorite is Exodus 14:14 - The Lord will fight for you, you need only be still. Because the life of a writer is one filled with doubt and fear and wondering if readers will hate the book or if my words will disappear or if I’ll failfailfailfail. And I just have to remember that the battle for reader’s hearts is not my battle. My job is to be obedient and write. The Lord will do the fighting. And this applies to so many other corners of life.

THE CREATURES EXIST.

#1. What was the inspiration for this series?
The inspiration for The Tethered World Chronicles blossomed from a love of The Chronicles of Narnia and all of the wonder that accompanied reading it to my children when they were young. I wanted to write the kind of story that everyone could enjoy together, and one that would stay with you after you finished the series. I also have a Narnia spinoff up my sleeve and knew I needed to establish myself as a writer first, before anyone would take such an undertaking seriously!

#2. How long did it take to finish writing these books?

The first book, The Tethered World, took a year for the first draft. Then I spent the next four or five editing it while I (sort of) figured out the publishing world. After I signed a contract with my publisher, Mountain Brook Ink, I then had only 8 months to complete the next book, The Flaming Sword, and then another 8 months after that to complete the final book, The Genesis Tree. It was intense but I learned that I work well under pressure, and it really built my faith to see the Lord give me the story literally as I wrote it. I do not plot beyond three or four main events that I want to happen from beginning to end so it was a wonderful (and often stressful) experience to watch the story unfold at my fingertips!

#3. Do you have favorite character(s) in this series?
Oh yes, too many to name! They’re all my “kids”, you know? But the twins, Brady and Brock come to mind right away. My own son is autistic, like Brock, so I loved incorporating his autism as part of the plan and purpose of the story that unfolded. And Brady became the friend and protector to Brock that I wish my son had. They were a great team together in the story!

#4. What do you hope your readers will take away with them when they read these books?
Purpose! I pray that they will see that they are part of a beautiful story that the Lord is writing, and that even in the most devastating of circumstances they are a valuable part of that story. We serve a big God with mysterious plans we don’t always understand, but Who works all things for our good--even when things seem otherwise.

#5. What made you choose some of the specific locations in the books?

My story is set in both the Pacific Northwest (Portland/Vancouver area) and pockets in the earth. I grew up in the Northwest and love and miss it fiercely (I’m now in Texas)! You might say that my including it in my books was a bit of a love letter to the place that I grew up.

As far as the other area in my story, The Tethered World which exists in pockets of the earth...I wanted a reasonable explanation for the rumors worldwide of Bigfoot, dwarves, leprechauns, and the like.

I decided to make them former residents of the Garden of Eden that the Lord moved below ground before the flood of Noah. Through natural disasters like earthquakes, cracks in the ground have allowed them access to “topside” once again, which is why people the world over have folklore and legends about such things.

#6. How did you name your characters?
Most of my characters are named after people I know and love. It was a fun way to give them a nod for being an important part of my life. Sometimes I mixed their names up (i.e. Revonika instead of Veronica), other times I used them outright. I also keep a running list of interesting names I come across so I have many choices when needed.

#7. Tell us something funny, sad, embarrassing, whatever, that happened involving this series.
I think one of the funniest things has been people’s reactions to my writing fantasy. I’m talking people that KNOW me well, like my husband and close friends. Though they know I’m creative in my decorating or how I dress, they had no clue of the world building and otherworldly imaginations I’m capable of. I’m not one to geek out over books, beyond Narnia, and I don’t decorate with unicorns or dragons or anything like that. The reaction has been, “Apparently I know nothing about you!” or “Where did all of this come from? I never suspected a thing! I suppose it’s an introverted talent of mine, LOL.

Bonus. Share with us a thought, Bible verse, whatever is on your mind/heart.
Revelations 5:13 is the Bible verse at the beginning of my book. To me it hints at possibilities in the universe beyond our understanding:

Happy five year blogoversary! Thanks for having me on your blog today. I can’t believe it’s already December! I’m one of those people who gets into the Christmas spirit as soon as Halloween is over. So now that it’s December, I’m in full Christmas mode. At my house, we don’t have a traditional Christmas tree. Don’t get me wrong—I love Christmas trees. But we have five pets. Two dogs and three cats to be exact. And while the dogs have been pretty good with trees, the cats—not so much!

Leo and Willow are obsessed with eating the trees. So a few years ago, I came up with the perfect solution. While shopping in Lowe’s with my mom, I found an LED Christmas tree with no actual needles or Christmas fir on it. My mom called it the Charlie Brown Christmas tree. At first the cats were skeptical, but now they don’t really bother it at all, and it has the added bonus of being super easy to put up and take down.

I’m also a huge music lover, and that means I’m crazy about Christmas music. Here is a list of ten songs that I love in no particular order. Now that I live in Michigan and have plenty of snow, the wintery, snow songs have a different meaning than they used to when I lived in Georgia. But I still love those classic songs.

The Christmas Bells are Jingling Here at Mentink Manor

Oh how I love Christmas time! Hello, all. Dana Mentink here. I am a suspense and mystery writer, among other things, so I thought I’d take the time out of my writing life to give you a peek into my Christmas season. Let’s get the work related stuff out of the way first, shall we? I’m a part time third grade teacher so I am especially grateful to have some days off of teaching little folks during the holidays. There’s never an extended break from my writing job, but that’s just fine by me, as it’s my passion and going without it for a while is like trying to stay on a stale bread and water diet. Torture! At the moment, I’m working on a four book cowboy suspense series, a cozy mystery proposal and an ebook, so there’s plenty to keep me busy. For me, peak hours are early in the morning before all the craziness kicks in.

With two teen kiddos, a box turtle, parakeet and a naughty terrier, there’s always some sort of commotion at Mentink Manor. Christmas is especially madcap, as we prop up our old rickety artificial tree (the one next to which Hubby proposed to me!) It’s missing some branches and there’s a decided lean to the left, but we festoon that thing regally every year and hope Junie the terrier does not destroy too many ornaments! Christmas lights up on the roof? Check! Christmas Eve-after-church-pizza ingredients purchased? Check! Christmas carols blaring? Yep! Some calorie laden sweet baking in the oven? Er, yes, though I think it spells disaster for my efforts to lose those extra pounds that keep sneaking back when I’m not looking. Sigh!

But the best moments, of course, are the time with my kiddos when we are all gathered around enjoying the season together. These are rare and precious minutes as these young Mentinks are busy with college, friends, work, etcetera. Still, though, when we’ve got our mugs of hot cocoa and we’re gathered around watching a silly Christmas movie (“Buddy Elf. What’s your favorite color?”) it is a time to remember that God blessed us richly with family, with relationships, with time to get to know Him on this earth. What more precious gift could there be than that?

Christmas Murder Mix-Up
This little novella was so much like reading a Hallmark movie, you know those cool murder mystery ones. Yeah, on one hand it was a delightful cozy story but it was definitely punctuated with some moments of chilling danger! It was also fun for me to discover a new-to-me author!

Holiday Pursuit
This novella started right off with a bang...literally. I enjoyed the cloak-and-dagger storyline as this new-to-me author took her heroine, and readers, on a wild Christmas ride complete with bad guys in hot pursuit! Definitely an exciting, and dangerous, way to spend the holidays!

A Holiday Intruder
This novella fully embodies the words 'sweet' and 'mystery'. I've read one on of this author's previous series' and I looked forward to reading her take on a holiday mystery. Lots of little tidbits about Georgia history and some quirky characters added a delightful touch to the story.

Overall
A nice collection of stories that center around Christmas, mystery, and of course, romance. Each one was a quick and easy read. Holly, Ivy, And Intrigue is just right for getting into the holiday spirit...along with a little mayhem to spice up the season...
