Genre: Contemporary/Historical Romance Hope Between The Pages |
-From Goodreads- Uncover the Story Behind a One-Hundred-Year-Old Love Letter Walk through Doors to the Past via a new series of historical stories of romance and adventure. Clara Blackwell helps her mother manage a struggling one-hundred-year old family bookshop in Asheville, North Carolina, but the discovery of a forgotten letter opens a mystery of a long-lost romance and undiscovered inheritance which could save its future. Forced to step outside of her predictable world, Clara embarks on an adventure with only the name Oliver as a hint of the man’s identity in her great-great-grandmother’s letter. From the nearby grand estate of the Vanderbilts, to a hamlet in Derbyshire, England, Clara seeks to uncover truth about family and love that may lead to her own unexpected romance. ISBN-13: 9781643528267 Will she find loss or hope between the pages... I've loved family history ever since I was an eight year old lying on my great grandmother's living room floor reading the binders my great aunt had put together on her 90's computer. So Clara's search for truth and family in Hope Between The Pages was right up my alley. | This Book received a 4 Bark rating. |
Pepper D. Basham takes her readers from the fictional Blackwell's book shop to the spectacular real Biltmore estate all the way to the lovely shores of rural England in a story that spans the decades and generations. Hope Between The Pages is well chosen for this story of unexpected love, obstacles overcome, heartbreaking loss, and faith held onto despite the odds. My gamut of emotions were all certainly well used by the time I turned the last page.
If you enjoy dual-timeline stories I highly recommend Barbour's Doors To The Past series. Each one can be read standalone or you can read them in order. Not one is to be missed and I'm looking forward to the next one's release...

Come Back To Me
Waters Of Time book 1
by Jody Hedlund
-From Goodreads- The ultimate cure that could heal any disease? Crazy. That's exactly what research scientist Marian Creighton has always believed about her father's quest, even if it does stem from a desire to save her sister Ellen from the genetic disease that stole their mother from them. But when her father falls into a coma after drinking a vial of holy water believed to contain traces of residue from the Tree of Life, Marian must question all of her assumptions. He's left behind tantalizing clues that suggest he's crossed back in time. Insane. Until Marian tests his theories and finds herself in the Middle Ages during a dangerous peasant uprising. William Durham, a valiant knight comes to Marian's rescue and offers her protection . . . as his wife. The longer Marian stays in the past, the more she cares about William. Can she ever find her father and make it back to the present to heal her sister? And when the time comes to leave, will she want to? Bestselling author Jody Hedlund is your guide down the twisting waters of time to a volatile era of superstition, revolts, and chivalry in this suspenseful story. ISBN-13: 9780800738433 The past and future hang in the balance... | This Book received a 4.5 Bark rating. |
I have two confessions to get out of the way. First, despite most of my online book friends raving about her books this is the first one that I've read by Jody Hedlund. The second is that I've never really been into time travel stories, sure, I've read a few but they are not something I usually gravitate towards. However, there was just something about Come Back To Me that really caught my attention. It was probably the eye-catching cover that Bethany House designed, one of my favorites so far this year, that started it all, but still...
I started Come Back To Me with my eyes wide open. Few authors take on time travel and even fewer do so successfully. And because this was my first Jody Hedlund book I had no illusions and nothing to color my expectations. I did, however, know that Bethany House invariably puts out really good books no matter the genre. I was not disappointed in any way...
The story was very well written, modern thread and historical alike. I genuinely cared about the characters. I also thought I had the villain figured out, but, boy, was I wrong! But, what I loved the most was the era that Jody Hedlund chose for her first Waters Of Time book. The Peasants Revolt. Not an era usually chosen, a lot is known about it but there's also lots of room for speculation and for storytelling. I also appreciated how she kept the belief in miracles prevalent at that time alive and unjudged by today's rationalism. So, yes, I very much enjoyed Come Back To Me and I'm definitely looking forward to the next Waters Of Time novel...

Deadly Amish Reunion
Amish Country Justice book 9
(Love Inspired Suspense)
by Dana R. Lynn
-From Goodreads- Separated by amnesia… reunited by a lethal holiday threat. Jennie Beiler’s husband was supposed to be dead, so she’s shocked when he rescues her from an attacker. Although Luke has no memories of his Englisch wife, it’s up to him to protect her from someone who won’t stop until she’s dead. Can the peaceful Amish community he returned to after losing his memory shelter them and their son this Christmas when danger strikes again? ISBN-13: 9781335403216 Their lives are about to be disrupted... Amish Romantic Suspense is a fast growing sub-genre that I've been enjoying since reading my first Marta Perry book a few years ago. Since then Dana R. Lynn has become one of my absolute favorite authors of Amish romantic suspense and I have fallen in love with her exciting Amish Country Justice series. The amnesia trope has been used many times before, but, every so once in awhile an author will either bring something new to the table or will make it so interesting it seems new. Deadly Amish Reunion is one of those. Dana R. Lynn did a great job with it, keeping me intrigued and invested in whether Jennie and Luke would be able to survive the danger and piece a new and different life together. | This Book received a 4 Bark rating. |

The continuing adventures of Rembrandt Stone from the creative minds of James L. Rubart, Susan May Warren, and newcomer David Curtis Warren, writing collectively as David James Warren. When Rembrandt goes back to stop the untimely death of his partner, he finds himself wrapped up in the disappearance of two missing children in the middle of an epic Minneapolis blizzard. But, can he save the children in time--and if he does, will he also be able to save his partner? Publisher: TriStone Media Release Date: June 1, 2021 Genre: Time Travel Detective Series *NOTE: This post contains affiliate links. |
I've been waiting for this book since first starting The True Lies Of Rembrandt Stone series. I wanted to see Rem's conscience start to wake up and needle him about the choices he's made during his time travels. Finally, Sticks And Stones delivered just that.
Time Travel is not a genre that I usually go to but this series from the super talented combination of James Rubart, Susan May Warren, and David Warren intrigued me and has held my attention through three books. I've been enjoying the suspense/thriller plots as well as trying to guess what new disastrous results of Rem's meddling with history will hit him next. And they will nail him harder each time than the last.
David James Warren brings up some great questions in Sticks And Stone, and the entire series for that matter, from man's mortality to free will versus fate, and whether the things that make up the past happened the way they were supposed to the first time. This book is also a great reminder of how easily even our tiniest choices can affect the people around, for good or for bad. Definitely a lot to ponder...which is not bad for a quick reading time travel story...

The island world of Meriel faces an old adversary and a new danger. Will the reformed Order die before it has a chance to blossom? Storm clouds loom on the horizon as Carya and Brantley struggle to overcome wounds of the past and build a future together. The fragile new Order is on shaky ground, with too few dancers and sparse resources. Then trouble erupts—and now an insidious rebellion and a new foe threaten their entire world. When she uncovers an old enemy behind all the destruction, Carya realizes the past is not done with her. With conflict tearing apart the dancers and villages, rimmers are soon overrun, and Carya must unite her people by leading the battle to protect the very heart of her world … or lose it all. Genre: Christian epic fantasy Release date: May 11, 2020 Click here to get your copy! |
The stakes have never been higher for Carya and Brantley. This time they have the world to save and everything to lose. Sharon Hinck has upped her game making Windward Shore, the exciting conclusion to her Dancing Realms series, even more tense and fun to read.
I generally speaking avoided fantasy for years, and other than a few select books just never seemed to get into the genre. But a few years ago I found a series that changed my mind and because of that I've discovered some very talented authors like Sharon Hinck and their amazing stories. Seriously, The Dancing Realms series is exactly what fantasy is supposed to be, what it's MEANT to be! And I'm just sorry that with Windward Shore I am now saying goodbye to some very dear friends that I've come to love over the course of three books.
Windward Shore is a very entertaining read, it engrosses the reader and keeps them invested in what happens to the characters. But, there's a lot more to the story. Life and spiritual lessons are well woven into the patterns of story. Sharon Hinck is a master at her craft and it shows in this book and in the rest of The Dancing Realms novels. She uplifts and encourages readers while successfully telling some pretty wonderful stories.
I can say without hesitation that I would heartily recommend Windward Shore and the rest of the Dancing Realms series to YA and adult readers alike. Whether fantasy is your cup of tea or not Sharon Hinck is an author you definitely won't want to miss...
Tell Tale Book Reviews gives Windward Shore by Sharon Hinck a 4.5 Bark rating.
More from Sharon
We all face trials in life, seasons that are more challenging than we expected, opportunities to deepen our faith as we lean into God, times that test our courage. But I’ve found that sometimes the most difficult problems are those that I think I’ve already beaten—and then they rise up again. I drew from that experience to shape the new battles in Windward Shore.
Q: In the Dancing Realms series, the Maker has given dancers a special gift to serve their world. Why did you choose dance as a means for bringing provision or protection? A: I was a dancer and choreographer for many years before becoming a writer. Dance is a means of communicating with the whole being—heart, mind, and body. So dance became a beautiful way for Carya to connect with her Maker and serve her world. Q: What other interests shaped the series? A: I’ve been studying cults and how people become trapped in lies, and more importantly, how they find freedom. So that concept helped me create the various traps that characters faced in all three books. Q: What is a key theme in Windward Shore? A: Although I write “Stories for the hero in all of us,” I recognize that we can’t always be the hero—at least not in our power. Our determination alone isn’t enough. Our Maker calls us to dependence on Him, and often He asks us to lean on others as well. That’s a key challenge that Carya faces in Windward Shore. |
Award-winning author Sharon Hinck writes “stories for the hero in all of us”—stories about ordinary women on extraordinary faith journeys. Known for their authenticity, emotional range, and spiritual depth, her novels include the groundbreaking The Sword of Lyric fantasy series and the imaginative new The Dancing Realms series, which began with the Christy Award–winning Hidden Current and was followed by Forsaken Island. Sharon’s writing has also been honored with three Carol Awards. For this latest series, she drew on her experience as a ballet teacher, dancer, and choreographer. |

My family can tell you that I got pretty caught up in The Silver Shadow and spent the day, between chapters that is, mumbling to myself about a crazy killer who thought they were doing God's work by attacking women on their way home from church! Seriously, author Liz Tolsma really got me going with her latest addition to the True Colors series.
As I've read through the True Colors historical romance / true crime series I've already been aware of several of the historic crimes featured. But not so with The Silver Shadow. The Capitol Hill Thug crime wave from August 1900 through February 1901 was a totally new one one me. But, I'm always up for learning something new from history.
Overall I enjoyed this book from Liz Tolsma. It was an interesting and entertaining read. The hero and heroine were great and you couldn't help but like them both. The author's note at the end of the book was quite fascinating as she lays out the fact from the fiction. I honestly wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Silver Shadow, the entire True Colors series, or even Liz Tolsma's other historical romance titles. Just don't forget to check over your shoulder the next time you are out walking alone...

I went online and scoured historical crime blogs and books for ideas. I wanted crimes that I could work easily with, that made for compelling stories. As I was doing this, my husband and two daughters and I were driving home from Georgia. We were somewhere in Indiana. Don’t ask me why I remember this when I can’t remember what I had for dinner last night, but I do. |
Then I sat down to research it more. And I could hardly find anything! What? Where was all the information on this? There had to be more. That chapter in the one book couldn’t be all there was. He had to get his information from somewhere.

I had initially intended on writing this review one way, had even started working on it in my head. But then, as so often happens, life threw a monkeywrench into the works.
I had enjoyed the One On One EP and listened to it several times. The music, the lyrics, and Gary Levox's voice, were just so to listen to, and I particularly enjoyed the appearance of an old favorite of mine, Mercy Me. However, it was some of the themes that were explored in these five songs that unexpectedly resonated with me. I say 'unexpected' because of that monkeywrench I mentioned. The themes of God's grace and forgiveness are important to any Christian but what I needed to hear this week was the reminder of God's faithfulness and His presence when things are not going well.
It may have seemed to be a random thing when I chose to listen to One On One from Gary Levox, a new-to-me artist, but it really wasn't. Hearing that particular message literally right before a time of uncertainty was most certainly not a coincidence.
So, if you are in need of a little encouragement, may I suggest the One On One EP from Gary Levox. Not only is it easy to listen to and has memorable lyrics, but, it may come just when you most need to hear something in it....

Right Cross was a strong addition to the Shepherd Suspense series and every bit as good is its predecessors. I was impressed with Andrew Huff's ability to pen a second, and now third, novel in a series and maintain the levels of danger, action, and suspense.

If there's one thing Terri Blackstock is good at it's romantic suspense with psychological drama. Aftermath is proof of exactly that. I've been a longtime fan of Terri Blackstock, probably close to 20 years now, so I know what chilling reading delights are ahead of me and I'm always excited when I see that she has a new release.
Aftermath was a little different than I expected, but still very good. The psychological drama is well developed as even likable characters emotionally spiral out of control while trying to make sense out of tragedy. Trauma, grief, betrayal, loss, it's all here...plus a bit of romance and a deadly crime to solve before the clock runs out and it happens again...
was a great read and it definitely lived up to my expectations. Terri Blackstock always seems to one-up herself a little bit with each new release and this book was no exception. That ability is what keeps me coming back and highly anticipating her work.
If you are looking for some edge-of-your-seat romantic suspense that at times reads like a high-stakes thriller you've really got to try Aftermath from award winning author Terri Blackstock. Don't miss it!

With a title like Danger On The Loch I knew there would at least be a little mystery. But, I was in for a bit of a surprise. The tale did feel a little like a cozy mystery at times but it was also well mixed with romantic suspense and a touch of Gothic.
It's been awhile since I've 'had' an adventure in Scotland and I was in need of an escape so this book from new-to-me author Paige Edwards seemed like a good choice. And I did enjoy it. It may not be the most complicated of plots but it was fun to take it a little easier and still try my own Nancy Drew skills at figuring out the villain. Plus there were some surprises along the way that livened things up.
Danger On The Loch also had a great friends-to-lovers element that I really liked. I've never been a fan of love triangles, thankfully this book has none, but friends-to-lovers is one romance trope that I can almost always get behind. And these two, Paisley and James, are so sweet together, first as friends and even more as romance begins to blossom.
Danger On The Loch was a charming read and a great introduction to Paige Edwards' storytelling. I enjoyed the story and will have no problem reading more from her. There were a couple of references to a related book and now Paige Edwards has me curious...

The Lady In Residence
Doors To The Past book 1
by Allison Pittman
-From Goodreads- Can a Legacy of Sadness be Broken at the Menger Hotel? Visit historic American landmarks through the Doors to the Past series. History and today collide in stories full of mystery, intrigue, faith, and romance. Young widow Hedda Krause checks into the Menger Hotel in 1915 with a trunk full of dresses, a case full of jewels, and enough cash to pay for a two-month stay, which she hopes will be long enough to meet, charm, and attach herself to a new, rich husband. Her plans are derailed when a ghostly apparition lures her into a long, dark hallway, and Hedda returns to her room to find her precious jewelry has been stolen. She falls immediately under a cloud of suspicion with her haunting tale, but true ghost enthusiasts bring her expensive pieces of jewelry in an attempt to lure the ghost to appear again. In 2017, Dini Blackstone is a fifth-generation magician, who performs at private parties, but she also gives ghost walk tours, narrating the more tragic historical events of San Antonio with familial affection. Above all, her favorite is the tale of Hedda Krause who, in Dini’s estimation, succeeded in perpetrating the world’s longest con, dying old and wealthy from her ghost story. But then Dini meets Quinn Carmichael, great-great-grandson of the detective who originally investigated Hedda’s case, who’s come to the Alamo City with a box full of clues that might lead to Hedda’s exoneration. Can Dini see another side of the story that is worthy of God’s grace? ISBN-13 : 978-1643527482 The past and present merge and intertwine... | This Book received a 4 Bark rating. |
I really enjoyed this book. It was different, it was fun, a little eerie at times, and it was intriguing. The dual timeline was well done, each layer tying in nicely with the other thread. One of the things I found quite interesting was the Allison Pittman's choice of making this novel a little on the bittersweet side. Not everything is tied up in a neat bow with a trip down the aisle. I can tell you that it successfully kept The Lady In Residence from being just another cookie-cutter historical romance novel.
The mystery in this book was great! It kept me puzzling things out and trying to guess where things would go next. Oh, and one of my absolute favorite things about this book was the modern girl's profession in magic. So different and so fun!
The Lady In Residence was a great start to the Doors To The Past series and I can't wait to read the next one! And I'll definitely be looking for other books from Allison Pittman as well...

Release date: March 16th
I was intrigued by the title right off the bat. The Secret Of The 14th Room, it sounds so mysterious doesn't it?
I'll be completely honest, I had mixed feelings while reading this book. There were times when the story really annoyed me but what kept me coming back is stated right in the title, The Secret Of The 14th Room. I really enjoyed the cozy mystery aspect. True, there were parts of the story that were not quite realistic and there were times that the moral lessons felt a little bit forced, but, oh the mystery! The way Rebecca Hemlock wove our nation's history into the Corbin family's secret was great and the whole family history element was pretty cool in my book! Another thing that was kind of fun was the surprise villain. You are so sure from the beginning you know who the bad guy is...or do you?
The characters have a lot to grapple with in this story. Loss, anger, betrayal, childhood bullying, greed, fear, but, most importantly, forgiveness. While I didn't always 100% agree with the author's take I liked the fact that she did explore those issues and that she accurately portrayed forgiveness as a choice, a journey, and sometimes a battle to move beyond your own hurt.
While this was not my favorite book I would definitely consider reading the next book to find out if one character's change is real and if it continues. If you enjoy simple, easy to read, Christian cozy mysteries The Secret Of The 14th Room from Rebecca Hemlock just might be up your alley...
Tell Tale Book Reviews gives The Secret Of The 14th Room by Rebecca Hemlock a 3.5 Bark rating.
More from Rebecca
This book not only captures my love for American history and riveting romantic suspense, but it also captures how old wounds of the heart can be healed.
Levi Corbin in The Secret of the 14th Room learns this the hard way after carrying his broken heart for most of his adult life. He has to discover the real meaning of family and family pride. Levi must face the past so that he can move on to a brighter future.
Granton, Tennessee, is a town I hope you fall in love with, just as I did when I created it. There are so many delightful characters, some with a dark secret or two. This story has been brewing for a while, and I am glad that I finally have the opportunity to share it with you.
Rebecca lives in Eastern Kentucky with her husband and children. She absolutely loves mysteries. Rebecca has been writing stories for many years and enjoys reading, painting and spending time with her family. Her favorite times to write are early in the morning when the sun is coming up and at sunset. She has worked as a freelance journalist for 4 years and is a member of Sisters in Crime and American Christian Fiction Writers. Rebecca has earned a degree in English and an Appalachian Studies certificate in Creative Writing. |

Someone or something is watching Kathryn Ellison. Kathryn thought she had buried memories of That Night for good—until Nick Lawson returns, reigniting her long-suppressed feelings for him. Seeing Nick has always reminded her too much of the horrible night that changed her life. As much as she wants to be with him, she wants even more to forget. When Nick unexpectedly shows up at her family ranch, Kathryn knows it is finally time to let go of the traumatic past that has held her captive for so long. David Henley is a captive too—of the dark secret involving Kathryn, a secret he’s kept even from his wife. Now the truth is about to be revealed. And when it is, he could be stripped of everything in his life that matters to him. A storm is brewing in the spiritual realm, and its effects reverberate through the natural world, summoning otherworldly Beings to the ranch. While Kathryn confronts the memories of That Night and struggles to let them go, she is not as alone in her home as she thinks. As spiritual and temporal forces collide, Kathryn—and everyone she loves—is about to be caught in the crossfire. |
I have to admit that The Watcher is probably the most unique story labeled as romantic suspense that I've ever read. Now, personally, I would label Sara Davison's dramatic story of pain, loss, forgiveness, and redemption, as more in the speculative genre. The two, romantic suspense and speculative, though, are a pretty interesting mix in this book.
The Watcher is a fitting title as Kathryn Ellison's story is told from the perspective of a spiritual being, representing a specific human emotion, who has stood watch over her life for many years. This 'Watcher' has witnessed everything, from Kathryn's happy childhood, to That Night, and the years of struggle afterwards. But, as with any good romantic suspense novel, things are about to get scary for Kathryn.
I'll be honest, I had mixed feelings about Sara Davison's choice of narrators. Plus the whole spiritual beings element kind of gave the story almost a touch of allegory. But, it also gives readers a truly unique look into the characters thoughts and experiences. In addition it made me ponder my own thoughts and reactions in a new way.
As you can see I am still thinking about The Watcher even now a few days after finishing it. It was different, it was interesting, and you just might enjoy Sara Davison's book yourself if you like stepping outside of the norm once in awhile...
Tell Tale Book Reviews gives The Watcher by Sara Davison a 4 Bark rating.
Sara Davison is the author of three romantic suspense series—The Seven Trilogy, The Night Guardians, and The Rose Tattoo Trilogy. She has been a finalist for ten national writing awards, including Best New Canadian Christian author, a Carol, a Selah, and two Daphne du Maurier Awards for Excellence in Mystery/Suspense. She is a Word and Cascade Award winner. She currently resides in Ontario, Canada with her husband Michael and their three children. The words on the mug she uses every morning pretty much sum up her life—I just want to sleep, drink coffee, and make stuff up. Get to know Sara better at www.saradavison.org and @sarajdavison. Begotten is an edited, new edition of a novel previously released in 2006, The Begotten. At the height of the Inquisition, a secret half a millennium old is about to be exposed---a lost letter believed to have been written by Saint Paul but never part of the Christian canon. The letter speaks of men and women---the Gifted---with profound spiritual gifts that will strike fear in the heart of a Church dedicated to maintaining power. Now the letter has surfaced and the Gifted are gathering. But so are their enemies... Well.... That was definitely much different than I expected! But then, Lisa T. Bergren is pretty good at surprising people and she has a talent for crossing genres. Begotten was different from any other book that I've read by her but that only made it more interesting.
What really fascinated me about this story was Lisa T. Bergren's skillful, not to mention surprising, blend of historical romance, Catholic tradition, and what really threw me, spiritual warfare. Over the years I've read a number of novels featuring spiritual warfare, authors like Frank Peretti, Ted Dekker, Bill Myers, Angela Hunt, but pretty much all of them were 'contemporary' making Begotten the first with that particular topic as a central theme
Begotten was intriguing on all fronts, as a historical romance, as a spiritual warfare novel, and as a story of faith. It's also a good wake-up call reminding us that all times are uncertain and that we are all called to live lives of prayer and faith, that we all have gifts that are meant to be used in service to others and for God's glory. Not bad, author Lisa T. Bergren, not bad. This book sure gets a person thinking, contemplating, not to mention wondering The Gifted will be taken next in book two...
Tell Tale Book Reviews gives Begotten by Lisa T. Bergren a Bark rating.
Lisa T. Bergren is the best-selling, award-winning author of over 60 books in a variety of genres, from children’s picture books to contemporary romance to supernatural suspense novels. Reading and history have been my passion since early childhood when my parents encouraged both. I was introduced to Christian fiction around age 4-5 while listening to radio drama adaptations of books by great authors including Janette Oke. I have been a voracious reader and avid library patron ever since. I started Tell Tale Book Reviews in December 2012. I am also an active volunteer in the areas I hold most dear, library, museum, and pets. Hobbies include a small bead jewelry business, watching classic movies/ TV, listening to Irish/Celtic music, and autograph collecting.
