Bio

Acclaimed author, M.L. (MaryLu) Tyndall dreamt of pirates and sea-faring adventures during her childhood days on Florida's Coast. After obtaining a degree in Math and working as software engineer for 15 years, she decided to test the waters as a writer. With now more than fourteen books published, she makes no excuses for the deeply spiritual themes embedded within her romantic adventures. As a follower of Christ, her stories often reflect her own journey and walk with God. Recipes
South vs Brazil

The settlers in Abandoned Memories have come a long way from home. I have carefully chosen the recipes to represent the settlers old home and the new. These are food that they MIGHT have made or eaten. Hopefully these recipes will inspire you to try a little something new and take you deeper into the world of the New Hope colony.

Southern

Candied Sweet Potatoes

Ingredients

6 large sweet potatoes
1/2 cup butter
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
salt to taste

Directions

1. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into slices.

2. Melt the butter in a heavy skillet and add the sliced sweet potatoes.

3. Mix the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.

4. Cover the sweet potatoes with sugar mixture and stir.

5. Cover skillet, reduce heat to low and cook for about 1 hour or until potatoes are "candied". They should be tender but a little hard around the edges. Also the sauce will turn dark. You will need to stir occasionally during the cooking.

6. Stir in the vanilla just before serving.

7. Serve hot.

Brazilian

Arroz Brasileiro - Brazilian-style Rice

Ingredients

1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 clove garlic
1 small onion
1 tomato
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups water
1 cup rice

Directions

Rinse the rice several times, until the water runs clear.
Chop the onion and the tomato into 1/4 inch cubes. Mash the garlic with a mortar and pestle.
Heat the vegetable oil in a saucepan on medium heat, and add the mashed garlic. Cook garlic for 1 minute.
Add the chopped onion and tomato and cook, stirring. Cook until softened, about 3 minutes.
Add the water and salt and bring to a boil.
Add the rice. Lower the heat, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes.
Turn off the heat and leave rice covered for 5 minutes more.
Fluff rice with fork and serve.

Countdown Day 1

Brazil in the 1800's

At the end of 1807 Napoleon invaded Portugal. In 1808 the king and his court fled to Brazil and Rio de Janeiro became the capital of the Portuguese Empire. Its population grew rapidly. New public buildings were erected and new theaters and libraries were built.

The king also tried to encourage the Brazilian economy. In 1808 he lifted a ban on manufacturing industry in Brazil. He also allowed Brazilians to trade freely with all friendly nations, not just Portugal. As a result many European craftsmen and artists came to Brazil.

Rio de Janeiro (1831)

Dom Pedro I

Then in 1820 the king returned to Portugal. He left his son Dom Pedro as regent in Brazil. In October 1821 Dom Pedro was recalled to Portugal but the Brazilians persuaded him to stay. On 7 September 1822 he broke with Portugal and declared Brazil independent. Portugal finally recognized Brazilian independence in 1825.

However Dom Pedro's reign as emperor of Brazil was short. Dom Pedro alienated the plantation owners by signing a treaty with the British in 1826. Britain agreed to recognize Brazil as an independent country but demanded that the slave trade be ended within 3 years. (The slave trade was banned in 1831 but it went on 'unofficially' until 1854. Slavery itself went on much longer. It was not abolished in Brazil until 1888).

Dom Pedro abdicated in 1831, in favor of his 5 year old son, Dom Pedro II.
As his son was only a child it left a power vacuum in Brazil and a period of instability followed. In 1835 the poor in Para began the Cabanagem rebellion. It went on until 1840. Meanwhile another rebellion began in Bahia in 1838.

In the face of the unrest Dom Pedro II was crowned in 1840, even though he was only 14. He soon proved to be capable ruler and he restored order.

Then in 1864-1870 Brazil and its allies Argentina and Uruguay fought a bloody war with Paraguay. It was called the War of the Triple Alliance and it began when Paraguay invaded Uruguay. The war ended in victory for Brazil and its allies but at a terrible price.

Meanwhile Brazil experienced a coffee boom. Coffee was first grown in Amazonia in 1727. In the late 18th century it spread across Brazil and from the mid 19th century it boomed.

From 1830 to 1964 coffee was Brazil's main export. In the 1870s and 1880s a network of railways was built across Brazil, which made it easier to transport coffee to the ports for export.

From the mid 19th century the rubber industry in Brazil grew rapidly. Cacao growing was also an important industry.

From the 1870s many Europeans emigrated to Brazil. Among them were many Italians, Germans and Portuguese.

Brazil's 1877–78 Grande Seca (Great Drought), the most severe ever recorded in Brazil, caused approximately half a million deaths.

In the 1870s republicanism began to grow in Brazil and finally in 1889 the army overthrew the monarchy and Brazil became a republic.

Unwittingly, she and her weak fiance become entangled in the hostility between the Pirate Earl and his enemy, while even more dangerous forces are rising up to destroy them all.

About ten years ago I discovered the amazing fact of Christian pirate stories through the books of Linda Chaikin. I honestly thought that after I had read all of her books that my days of sailing the Spanish Main were over.... and then I discovered MaryLu Tyndall's Legacy Of The King's Pirates series and once again I was walking the decks and smelling the salt breeze.

I have enjoyed each of the MaryLu Tyndall books I have read, and The Ransom was no exception. There are great characters, an intriguing time in history and location, a beautiful damsel in distress, a handsome pirate, treasure, betrayal, danger, and romance. Gosh, what more could I need?!

The main characters each struggle with much the same things. Expectations from family, betrayal, and what faith is really about. MaryLu Tyndall combines a no-holds-barred approach to spiritual truths with her own excellent writing skills that I find completely refreshing in today's Christian fiction market.

One of my favorite parts of The Ransom is the earthquake that that makes a rather, shall we say, noticeable appearance. The earthquake really did strike Port Royal in 1692 and divers are continually discovering new things about the city before. I am one of the nutty people that enjoys reading about earthquakes and hurricanes so when coupled with a great story it sucked me in like tsunami.

Do not miss any of the books in this series but especially do not miss out on The Ransom! You can read this one before the others, it is something of a standalone and has only a few small spoilers.
