Hidden Danger is about to come into the open...

Oh boy! What a story this was! Jerusha Agen may be a somewhat new-to-me author but I can already tell that she has her genre down almost to a science. Hidden Danger was a perfect example of just that. It's riveting. It's suspenseful. It's a little on the gritty side. And, it's impossible to put down.

One of the things that I loved best about Hidden Danger was that Cora is one of the most unique romantic suspense heroines I've read this year. She isn't a touch-as-nails cop or veteran nor is she a high-powered career woman. Nope, this girl doesn't have all the answers, she gets scared, and she needs a little help now and then with some of the tough stuff. Definite props to Jerusha Agen for giving readers a different kind of heroine to fall in love with in her first Guardians Unleashed novel. (Note, there is a prequel as well.) Don't get me wrong, I liked Kent too. He's tough and hard but exactly what our heroine needs. But...there was something a little special about Cora that gave her the edge in my heart...

Hidden Danger is one of Love Inspired Suspense's new full trade length novels. I've enjoyed the shorter 224-ish page books for several years now and , if the rest are as good as these early ones from Jerusha Agen, I know I will be a solid fan. Guardians Unleashed has me hooked without a doubt.

I read a lot of books and I can easily say that Hidden Danger was one of my favorites this month. I loved the taut suspense, trying to figure out the villain(s), and just enjoyed the wild ride Jerusha Agen treated her readers to, from bright cityscape to snow covered mountaintop. The scenery is chilling and the danger even more so...grab your mug of hot cocoa and dive into a really good read...

Kids journey through the Bible toward Home...

Part storybook, part devotional, all Truth. God With Us: A Journey Home is a well written adaptation of the best love story of them all, God's love for humanity. Through the fictional eyes of two angels author Jeremy Pierre and illustrator Cassandra Clark take kids, and the adults around them, on a full-color journey through the Bible, from Creation to Revelation, that reminds them that this world isn't where we belong and God has perfectly planned our return to His perfect home for us.

Even though I am an adult I found the book compelling and a wonderful reminder of truths that are often lost sight of in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Yes, the Jeremy Pierre's well chosen words are aimed at children, as are Cassandra Clark's vivid illustrations, but Truth is applicable for all ages.

As I read God With Us: A Journey Home I knew that it would be a great choice for parents or grandparents to read to their (grand)kids. Just a chapter before bed or first thing in the morning. Something of a devotional and definitely a conversation starter. It's a great base to start exploring Scripture as we each make our journey toward Home...

“There’s nothing here but a bunch of ragtag buildings.”
“You have no imagination.” Chloe stepped out of the car and slammed the door.
“Come on, Jason. You know she won’t leave us alone until we see what she’s excited about.”
He groaned. “You don’t want to live here, do you?”

My Review

Life is about to change for a simple shepherd boy...

Enclave has been seriously putting out some good fantasy, sci-fi, and speculative books over the last few years and to date I've never read one that I didn't like. Part allegory, part fantasy, and all adventure Wolf Soldier was no exception.

This first novel in the YA Lightraider Academy series is, quite surprisingly to me, based on a 1980s Christian roll playing game. I was quite impressed by James R. Hannibal's skill at bringing this fantasy world so vividly to life from a game that, quite honestly, came out before I was even born. His fantasy realm with all of its diverse characters was well constructed and I was pretty caught up in the story only a few pages in, that only increased as the Lightraiders went out on their quest.

One of the things that I really appreciated was reading James R. Hannibal's author note at the end of the book. I've always had trouble drawing all of the correct parallels while reading allegory and I loved how James R. Hannibal said that we shouldn't get too bogged down with the allegorical part and instead use it as it was intended, to point to the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

On the simpler and easy to read side, Wolf Soldier would also make the perfect read-aloud with your kids. From personal experience I can tell you that having a parent or parents read to a child makes a world of difference to them, and to the parents as well.

From a new-to-me author, Wolf Soldier was a great start to the Lightraider's Academy series. A book that entertained while introducing kids to spiritual warfare and teaching other important faith lessons. I liked the book and wouldn't hesitate to read book two whenever it releases.

Wolf Soldier: Origins

Did you know Wolf Soldier is set in a fantasy world created for a 1980s tabletop game? DragonRaid was an “adventure learning system” designed by Navigators author Dick Wulf. It used elements of choose-your-adventure stories and roleplaying games to teach Scripture memory and application. The game immersed players in the fantasy world of EdenAgain, where their hero characters applied Scripture to solve puzzles and battle “dark creatures.” Using God’s word in these allegorical challenges engaged the mind to increase understanding and retention.

I was one of the DragonRaid’s teenage fans. But the game vanished after only three years, buried by a ranting televangelist who created a campaign against it in a failed attempt to distract the world from his nefarious activities. Even worse, when the game vanished, it left us all on a cliffhanger—The Moonbridge Raid Campaign, Part One of Three.

Years later, with budding teens of my own, I sought out an old boxed set. When we ran out of the original stories, I wrote some of my own, and after playing these new stories with my little group, I sent them to the man who’d sold me the box. He sent them on to Dick Wulf, the original creator of the game.

Long story short: Dick, who had been given only a short time to live, asked me to take over the fantasy world and carry the game forward under the banner Lightraiders, including the task of novelizing the world.

That’s where Wolf Soldier came from. And I’m so excited to see where the characters and the Lightraider Order will take us. Dick went home to Heaven on July 6, 2021, but you can find the encouragement of his foreword inside Wolf Soldier.

By the way, I didn’t forget about the cliffhanger. Before turning in the novel, I completed Parts Two and Three of the Moonbridge Raid Campaign using drafts Dick Wulf wrote. Funded by a donor, our burgeoning Lightraiders game company matched the grand style of the original 1980s adventure guidebook, maps and all. Whew! What a relief to finally scratch that 35-year itch!

Interview with Jan

#1. What was the inspiration for this book?
The Stone and The Secrets is book 3 in the Secret Series. The heroine, Lady Elise Stanton is the daughter of Lady Evangeline, who is the heroine of book 1, The Secret Life of Lady Evangeline.
Elise is also the younger sister of the hero in book 2, The Sword and the Secrets. She and the hero, Sir William Degraf were introduced in book 2 and the readers wanted to know more about them. The Stone and the Secrets is their story.

#2. What drew you to write in this particular genre?
Totally by accident—okay more divine intervention. LOL. I usually write contemporary romantic suspense but Book 1, The Secret Life of Lady Evangeline simply wouldn’t let me alone. I HAD to write it, so I put my other stories aside and gave it my full attention. The next 2 books were birthed from book 1. And although I thought 3 books completed the series, the fourth book will be added soon.

#3. Do you have favorite character(s) in this book?
I love both the hero, William and heroine, Elise equally. There are other characters who make brief appearances that I loved including in the story. The priest, Father Alvin is a former war-weary knight who finally heeded the call to the priesthood. He’s as handy with the blade as he is the Word of God, and anyone intent on doing evil would do well to avoid him unless they are prepared to change their ways.

A note of interest I found while doing research for these books. The local priests were often called into service to fight when conflicts arose during that period, which inspired this no-nonsense character. The stories he could tell if only... LOL

#4. How did you name your characters?
I try them on and see if they fit. Your character will “tell” you if the name isn’t right. Read them aloud. If they don’t work try others. I also check out names in a baby book that has Biblical descriptions and characteristics. The names must fit the time period of the story. A name can be unusual but I want the reader to be able to bond with the character.

#5 Share with us a thought, Bible verse, whatever is on your mind/heart.

The Lord reminded me of this scripture soon after my husband passed away. All of OUR plans for the future ceased that day. After being married for so long, I wasn’t sure who I was as an individual. What was I going to do? God knew. He gave me faithful friends and family to pray for me, and He gave me my writing to help me focus on something other than my loss. And in spite of what troubles we must face while we’re here on this earth, I’ve read from the beginning to the end of His Book. Spoiler Alert: WE WIN. ☺ May the Lord bless you and keep you and give you peace.

Writing The Stone and the Secrets was as much a joy as it was a challenge.

The hero and heroine of this book were first introduced in book 2, The Sword and the Secrets. Several readers loved Elise and William so much, they wanted to know more about them. The Stone and the Secrets is Elise and William’s story.

Book 3, The Stone and the Secrets was also to complete the series, but as soon as it was finished, I knew there would have to be one more. I already have the title, plot, and the characters, but I’ll share more about that another day.

As a writer, I love getting to know the characters. Before the story is finished, it’s like I’ve known them their whole lives. It’s fun, but challenging to allow the characters to evolve without pushing them to the end too soon. Spoiler alert. I absolutely LOVE a happily-ever-after ending. It gives me, as the author, a satisfying feeling of closure. You can laugh, but it’s true.

The hero and heroine in The Stone and the Secrets are not the typical h/h you might imagine living in medieval times.

The beautiful and intelligent, Lady Elise Stanton has a long and impressive royal linage. Because of her heritage, protocol demands she marry someone with an equally impressive noble bloodline. The problem is, Elise has no interest in protocol, titles, or matchmaking, and refuses to be courted by empty-headed men who know nothing of using a forge, or mending a broken carriage axle. She’s a scientist whose curiosity about the how things work has gotten her into trouble since she was old enough to take things apart. With her creative mind, she is always thinking of new things to invent. Her first attempt to fly almost got her killed, but for our hero, William Degraf’s timely intervention.

He’s saved Elise many times during their childhood—a challenge he gladly accepts for he loves her deeply. However, William’s love for Elise is not to be. He must sacrifice his love so she can fulfill her destiny, which means marrying a man with title and wealth, neither of which he has. He is strong, handsome, and of noble character, but has not a noble bloodline.

Once Elise becomes of marriageable age, he realizes seeing her courted would be too painful, so he joins the king’s army. By becoming a knight, he hopes to forget her.

As I got to know Sir William Degraf, a knight of the king’s army, I can tell you, there’s not a braver or more loyal man to be found in all of England.

In the title, The Stone and the Secrets, the stone was initially meant to represent the meteorites, which Elise is determined to locate. She feels they are the answer to finding a unique metal needed for a secret project.

To my unexpected delight, in the midst of writing this story, I realized the “stone” also represents the Lord, our Corner Stone, the Rock of Ages, the Stone that the builder rejected, and much more.

I've been looking forward to reading Labyrinth Of Lies since reading the first Triple Threat Novel last year. That one quickly became my favorite Irene Hannon novel of all so I had high hopes for this one. Point Of Danger is still my favorite but Labyrinth Of Lies was great too! It was a strong addition to the Triple Threat series and was an equally riveting read, once again proving that Irene Hannon is a master of her craft.

As a person who has often been mistaken for being much younger, and I take it as a compliment, it was fun to read a story where the heroine uses that in her pursuit of justice. Cate may be a bit reluctant at first to go undercover but this girl will get her villain no matter what...and she just might get her hero at the same time.

Labyrinth Of Lies really is the perfect title for this book. Irene Hannon delivers many twists and turns in this second book in the Triple Threat series and she really keeps you guessing. I did figure out the villainous mastermind as soon as they were introduced so I wasn't surprised when they were revealed about ¾ of the way through, but, there were some other characters that I really wondered about the depth of their involvement.

If you've never read any of Irene Hannon's books I highly recommend trying out her Triple Threat Novels. You can read them standalone though they are better read in order. If you have already read Point Of Danger I'd tell you to stop dilly-dallying and get to reading Labyrinth Of Lies...

I've been enjoying the American Wonders Collection from the very first book and A View Most Glorious was no exception. Regina Scott takes another gorgeous American natural treasure and brings it to life so vividly that you feel almost like you are standing there yourself.

Mount Rainier is a familiar name but not a place that I know much about. I know that even today the climb can be treacherous but I'll admit that I haven't thought very much about those early climbers who risked life and limb with little to no decent equipment and no communication devices. In A View Most Glorious not only do we get a front row view of one of the first fictional women to climb Mount Ranier but we are also treated to the battle for women's right to vote and the somewhat lesser known economic depression that resulted from the 1893 Silver Panic. I love learning new things about history so it was fascinating to read about the effects on Tacoma, WA and the surrounding area.

Regina Scott did a wonderful job with the conclusion to her American Wonders Collection series and I'm sorry to see it end. I liked the characters a great deal and loved the dash of suspense that the author put them through. I was entertained, intrigued, and simply enjoyed the journey that the story takes.

You can read any of Regina Scott's lively and picturesque American Wonders Collection novels as standalone but you won't want to miss any of them, including A View Most Glorious. So, check out this book, this series, and this author...they are all well worth your time...
