Character Interview with the hero of
Dogwood Plantation Carter Nelson Williams
Greetings, Miss Augustine! I grew up on Dogwood Plantation but had determined early on that I would not spend my life here. I joined the Navy. I suffered a grave injury to my leg and returned to legal studies at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Now I find myself grieving the loss of my brother and sister-in-law and caring for their four children.
What do you most fear? Learning that Bonaparte and the Brits are done battling. I fear the War of 1812 could turn and put our dear country back into the hands of the English.
What is the most important thing to you?
Until I returned home to care for my nephews, I don’t think I realized that family is indeed most important to me. |
Very honestly, I see myself acting on behalf of the downtrodden in the Commonwealth of Virginia. But in my spirit, I sense that I may need to carry my cause North. I could well end up in Pennsylvania. I’ve always felt like a bit of an outsider with my objections to the horrible enslavement of others and I’ve wished I could work on my fellow Virginians to make changes. But I fear that my efforts could well, in the future, make me an outcast. I would hope to impact my nephews’ viewpoints so that they will not make the same choices our ancestors did, yet I do not know how they will receive my advice.
