Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny are four orphaned brothers and sisters who mysteriously appear in a small town on a warm summer night. No one knows who these young wanderers are or where they have come from. Frightened to live with a grandfather they have never met, the children make a home for themselves in an old abandoned red boxcar they discover in the woods. Henry, the oldest, goes to town to earn money and buy food and supplies while the other kids make a home in the boxcar finding old dishes and scraps in a junkyard. Ambitious and resourceful, the plucky children make a happy life for themselves. As time passes, they discover the struggles and rewards of independence as well as the joys of family - until one day Violet gets too sick for her brothers and sister to care for her. They must take Violet to a doctor risking discovery and the loss of their secret home in the forest.
When I was a kid my mom gave me paperbacks of the first 4 Boxcar Children stories. She had read them as a kid and loved them. It didn't take me long to fall in love with the stories of Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny. I devoured as many of those books as the library held and I could find elsewhere, even the ones written later.
I was a little bored late at night and after looking around Netflix for awhile I decided to give this animated movie version a chance. It was surprisingly well done. The animation is cute and the actors who voice the characters did a great job. The movie actually followed the book pretty well and it most definitely held to the spirit of the original. The Boxcar Children is a good, child friendly, movie with absolutely nothing even remotely objectionable in it. Parents and grandparents who remember reading the books can even enjoy a little nostalgia while entertaining the kiddies. Very cute and fun movie. |
