I don't ordinarily read much for Biblical fiction but I have been expanding my reading in that direction. I wasn't sure how I would like a book where the main characters are, well, kind of the bad guys. Definitely not heroine and hero material. But I was pleasantly surprised, it fleshed out the Biblical account and made me look at Jezebel in an entirely new way.

I was very impressed with the way Ginger Garrett handled the story, she didn't sacrifice the Biblical account in any way. Jezebel is still just as reprehensible, only now you get an idea as to what might have driven her.
Many sections of the story were nearly word for word from the Bible and I recognized much from Sunday School. The author's attention to Biblical detail is apparent, it's also obvious that she has read her Bible and paid attention.

I liked how the author kept the awe inspiring-ness of the God of the Old Testament. He is mighty and powerful, actively working in the world, His very presence is palpable.

Jezebel, herself, is hard to figure. You can see why she might have been driven to what she did, how childhood experiences and years of teaching by pagan priests might have turned her into the woman she was. At times you almost feel sorry for her and others you really feel that the curses were well deserved.

Ahab was warned to not bring a Phoenician bride back to Israel. What consequences will he pay for not obeying Yahweh's command? Ahab was also a bit hard to figure. On one hand he is gentle and genuinely loves Jezebel, and on the other he is a battle hardened warrior. His father was harsh and left Ahab not only scarred but also unable to wield the power that Jezebel thinks he should have.

Jezebel makes it her personal mission to defeat Yahweh, will she succeed? I suggest you read this book and your Bible to find out!

WORD Wednesday 6-26-13

I am playing with the idea of another regularly scheduled post. So for the next few weeks I will be posting what I am calling WORD Wednesday and we'll see how it goes.

WORD Wednesday is pretty simple. Many bloggers have started doing what is called 'Wordless Wednesday" and since I don't always like going with the flow... Well, I decided to something a little different. WORD Wednesday is going to be a once a week feature in which I will post an interesting Bible verse sometimes accompanied with a photo, sometimes not.

One of the best historical fiction books that I have read so far this year!

Ann Tatlock did such a wonderful job with Eve. She captured the in-between of being a 17 year girl perfectly, mature one moment and the next feeling like a little girl. Eve has a lot to learn about life and people, but what better place and time than a lodge full of summer visitors during Prohibition and the Great Depression. Eve thinks she knows right and wrong, everything is black and white, but as she spends time with people at the lodge and in town, she learns that it isn't always that easy. People aren't always what they seem and sometimes they make decisions for reasons that are hard to understand. But she is a genuinely kind-hearted girl that leans on her Faith, this helps her to face the hard things in life, be they small or large.

The cast of characters is wonderful, varied and realistic. You will find yourself falling in love with some, disliking others, feeling sad for some of them, and most definitely wanting to find out what happens to them next.

It was cool and quite rainy when I read this book but I was transported each time I opened the pages into a warm summer of Ohio. I found myself having to readjust to the “real world” when I had to lay it down. I often partly judge how much I like a book by the author's ability to paint pictures with words, drawing me in to the point that I can almost feel and taste as well as see with the characters, if I have to emerge from my reading and nearly reacquaint myself with my surroundings. The author managed to do this marvelously. I felt satisfied with how the story ended but also a little let down that it was now finished.

I was not familiar with Ann Tatlock's books when I saw Sweet Mercy, the cover and the synopsis on the back just drew me in. I'm glad that I was able to get this book for review and read it. I will definitely be looking for more books by Ann Tatlock in the future as well as checking out some of her previous titles.

Well worth the time to read, Sweet Mercy is a MUST READ for summer 2013.

Since I have read the first two books in the series somewhat recently, I started A Wedding For Julia anticipating a good story. I was not disappointed in any way, it was great!

It was fun checking in with Lydia, Aaron, Miriam, Gabe, and Grace. Getting to meet new characters and learning more about some we had already met. Of course, the beautiful Pebble Creek makes an appearance as well. I wished I could just go there, take a walk, and maybe do a little fishing like Caleb does.

This book is a bit more serious than the previous books in the series. It takes on death, care of an aging parent, and other things. But it is also just as entertaining and will keep you reading even after you have promised to turn the light off and go to bed. I finished A Wedding For Julia in about 24 hours, it's been a long time since I read a book in a day and it was nice to find out I still could.

One of the things I liked best was Vannetta Chapman's attention to detail. When I read the storm scenes I, honestly, was beginning to think it was just a wee bit over the top, such a storm isn't possible right? Boy, was I wrong! I decided to do a little research on the 1911 storm the characters refer to. Not only did the author describe what really happened in the Great Blue Norther of 1911, it was WORSE in some areas!
A fair amount of research must have gone into that part of the story and it showed. Great job, Vannetta! I really liked the entire book but the storm scenes quickly became my favorites, the author did an excellent job meshing historical facts with a modern setting.

This book is one I will definitely read again at least once. I have enjoyed the entire series and would recommend all of the books to anyone that enjoys the Amish genre or would like to give it a try.

#1. What was the inspiration for this book?
Once again, I had several inspirations. First of all, I wanted to highlight a handicapped child and their family. I have worked with several families in this situation while teaching, and I wanted to show what strong people they are. Also we have a handicapped daughter, so I wanted to share some of that experience.

Another inspiration was John Wayne. When I wrote this book, True Grit was being remade here in our area. I started watching old John Wayne movies and they stuck!

Lastly, I was inspired by an Eric Church song, entitled "Home Boy." It speaks of the love of brothers, even when one has gone astray. What an opportunity for grace!

#2. How long did it take to finish writing this book?
4 months to write it, 6 months if you include the various stages of editing.

#3. Do you have favorite character(s) in this book?
I did fall in love with Aaron. What a strong, precious child.

#4. What do you hope your readers will take away with them when they read this book?
Several things--a patience with family, an appreciation for friendship, and most of all--an awareness of God's grace, no matter our circumstances.

#5. What made you choose the specific location of a quilt shop for this series?
I had visited Shipshewana several times. Lolly's Fabrics is a lovely quilt shop located in Davis Mercantile. I walked into the store and fell in love with the location.

#6. Did any of your characters get their name(s) from an odd or unexpected place?
I named Max based on Agatha Christie's husband.

#7. Tell us something funny, sad, embarrassing, whatever, that happened involving this book.
Well, there's the scene with the Smart car. I've never owned one, but we pass one on the way to church (in another church's parking lot). I tried to get my husband to stop and let me measure the windows, so I could be accurate on this scene. He refused! Sometimes husband's do not understand the things a writer needs to do. :)

Bonus. Share with us a thought, Bible verse, whatever is on your mind/heart.
Matthew 6:25-27. It's so easy to spend much of our days worrying, but we're commanded not to do that! Aaron's parents naturally worry about him, but God has his eye on Aaron. We can all trust that God will take care of our children.

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?"

What a fun, funny, and totally enjoyable book!

I hadn't read Jen Turano's first book in this series, A Change Of Fortune, yet so I didn't know what to expect. I was in for a real treat and you will be too when you read this book. The dialogue is witty and will keep you laughing. The two main characters have such delightful barbs for each other, at least until they finally figure out they just might be in love.

Arabella and Theodore both think they know exactly what is right, but they both have some lessons to learn. And they do learn, sometimes the hard way. With the help of family, friends, and most importantly, God, they manage to become better people because of their mistakes. Each has a little soul-searching to do before the story ends.

Family is central to this book. Siblings, parents, and grandparents. The parents do make mistakes but they really do want what is best for their children.
I am so glad, as a modern woman, that I don't have to deal with all of the well-meaning matchmaking, I would go crazy if my parents were as set on it as the mothers are in this story.
The grandparents dispense love and wisdom and are not marginalized, the younger people actually listen. Wait until you read a little of the grandparent's story, I am hoping Jen Turano will write a book about them sometime in the future.

I would class A Most Peculiar Circumstance as a romantic comedy, but there is more to it. Arabella genuinely wants to help women and that often lands her in trouble, sometimes pretty serious trouble. The last 1/3 or so of the book has a nice suspense-type thread running through it. Where are the 'girls' on the street going? And who is after Arabella? The author did a good job on the who's-the-bad-guy part because I had no clue as to the who and why. Since I read an ARC I am not sure exactly what the final text will look like but I did have to say here that I really liked how the author handled the male protectiveness and the bit of violence near the end. Trying to not give much away, I liked how the men were allowed to be men, not cruel but realistic especially for the time period. There is nothing like the bad guys getting a good drubbing from the hero and the heroine's family! Quite satisfying after all of the dastardly things they had done. I won't say any more, you'll just have to read it for yourself.

This book is perfect if you are looking for romantic historical with lots of humor and a dash of danger.

Just from the cover I was expecting a good suspense story, what I got was a GREAT suspense story.
Not only was it really hard to put down but I had absolutely no clue who the guilty party was. Normally, if they introduce all of the suspects, I can make a good guess at who-done-it near the middle to end of the book. Not this time! DiAnn Mills wove her story well, she is a master of the unexpected.

Many of the characters were already Christians, including Kariss, that's one of the reasons she had to break it off with Tigo. I really liked how Kariss stood firm and didn't give in to her emotions about Tigo. Yeah, she is in love with him but she is determined to follow God first and foremost.

We meet a variety Christians in this book, brand new to old, the real deal to the hypocrite. I appreciated the accurate portrayal, no bashing or sugar-coating, just the way people really are. But don't think the reader is beaten over the head with religion, important part of the story, yes, but not page after page preachy.

As many suspense books do, The Survivor deals with some rather difficult subjects but I, as a person who has never experienced anything like the characters, felt that they were handled with reality and sensitivity.

The characters are real, sometimes they are able to forgive and others times they struggle and want revenge. They do their best to protect the ones they love, family and friends alike. Kariss especially, has a knack for putting herself into danger, sometimes needlessly, and is quite stubborn about it. Sometimes I wondered why she did that, but then I got to thinking about how bull-headed I can get at times.... Well, it made a little more sense then.

Overall this was a great book and I am looking forward to reading the first book when I get the chance.
