My Review

These characters will quickly 'Grow' on you....

I'm always up for a good family friendly movie and this whimsical tale of a girl and her pumpkin is just that. Grow is a fun movie and it is just right for this fall season.

Aside from a lot of pumpkins, at its heart, this movie is all about family. Sometimes it is messy. Sometimes it doesn't look quite like you think it should. Sometimes people make mistakes. But, in the end, it's all about pulling together to make something beautiful – quirky, but beautiful.

One thing that I have to say is that the little girl who plays Charlie is so good! She seriously makes this movie! She is talented and I was even more impressed by her personality. Some of her facial expressions just made me laugh out loud. And her interactions with Dinah, well, they were funny, they were sweet, and they were even a little poignant.

The setting is quite interesting as well. I'll admit that the UK is not the first place that comes to mind when I think of pumpkins, but... In this tale of massive pumpkin proportions the setting is half the charm.

Grow is definitely aimed more at kids with a nod to cartoon villains in a handful of scenes. There are a couple of spots that will go over the little kiddos' heads but their parents watching with them will definitely get a wink, a nod, and a laugh.

Overall I felt the movie was done well from filming to music to the touch of magic. Charlie and Dinah are wonderful and I found myself invested in their relationship as, along with a certain pumpkin, it grows from duty bordering animosity to genuine love and respect between two strong personalities. Anyway, Grow is good PG movie that the family can watch together...and family is always the most important thing....

Interview with JPC

#1. What was the inspiration for this book?
For most of my stories, I usually think of the climax first, and I thought of the climax for this novel years ago when working on earlier novels in the series. So I was very excited when I finally got to the book that would use it. And even more excited when the climax worked on paper. Sometimes, when a scene that works great in my head gets on paper, it doesn't work at all.

#2. How long did it take to finish writing this book?
About a year. I write four or five chapters by hand, then type them up, editing while I type, and then I handwrite the next four or five chapters. So I don't reach then end for about ten months. But when the whole thing is written, and I'm only editing, the first half of the book is pretty well polished, so I can focus on improving the second half.

#3. Do you have favorite character(s) in this book?
I like all my characters in some way, even my villains, when they behave and carry the story the way they are supposed to. But I have a particular joy in writing one-on-one scenes with Rae and her dad, Mal, and with Rae and her great-grandfather, Walter. Mal's and Walter's voice are so clear, and their relationship with Rae so special, that enjoy working with them in their scenes.

#4. What do you hope your readers will take away with them when they read this book?
First, I hope they take away a feeling of satisfaction, like they've finished a great meal. They've enjoyed following Rae through the twists and turns of the mystery and feel like they're time was well spend. Second, I hope they take away some of the faith questions that are raised in the book and think over the answers provided by the characters.

#5. What one piece of advice would you like to give readers?
Sit down with this novel as if you're sitting down with Rae in a coffee shop and she's bringing you up to date with her family's latest adventure.

Writing a Historical Mystery … Sort Of

I had a great time concocting the elaborate mystery for A Riddle in the Lonesome October. What made this novel unusual for me was the importance of history in figuring out the riddle to the hidden inheritance. In my other mysteries, the suspects were living people my amateur sleuth Rae Riley knew. She could speak to them and evaluate who was telling the truth, who was lying, and who was hiding something.

But for this mystery, Rae has to dig into the past. She decides in order to crack the riddle that was left to the heirs, she has to understand what kind of man was Cyrus Morley, the man who created the riddle. Since he died over seventy years ago, she has to use historical resources.

I had a lot of fun coming up with the documents Rae uncovers. Since Cyrus Morley was wealthy and owned coal mines in Marlin County, Ohio, where Rae lives, he was a prominent citizen, often featured in stories in the local newspaper. But official sources like that only revealed part of Cyrus Morley’s complicated life.

As a former librarian, I knew that local libraries can have books or documents that you can’t find anywhere online. Those materials were printed decades or even centuries ago and only have local interest, so no one has bothered to put them online. So I created a memoir, written by a local pastor’s wife. It’s the kind of book a church and its members would have but no one else.

I loved writing in a different style from Rae’s narration. The pastor’s wife, Rebecca, had help to write her memoir in the 1980s. But I thought the style would be older since Rebecca was born in 1900. I grew up on Agatha Christie and Rex Stout, so I enjoyed writing excerpts from the memoir in a more old-fashioned style, so readers would feel like they were reading a genuine, historical document.

What was even better was figuring out a way for Rae’s eighty-one-year-old great-grandfather Walter to provide clues. Coming up with a family history that intersects with Cyrus’s life was an absolute joy to create. I loved writing the chapter in which Walter tells Rae this unknown chapter in the Malinowski family’s history.

So if you like your mysteries with a touch of history, I’m sure you’ll love Rae’s investigation into a mystery seventy years in the making.

My Review

Only romantic sparks should be in the air....

It's finally happening! RaeLyn and Mason are getting married with Tilly as co-star! However, it wouldn't be The Little Red Truck Mysteries without some laughter and tears and a whole lot of mayhem for the rambunctious and quirky Hadley clan.

To start with, I have to say that this cover is one of my favorites this year. Elements of the story are everywhere and Pawpaw's, now RaeLyn's, truck, Tilly, is front and center where she should be. Mistletoe And Mayhem was both an interesting and fun read....and, as someone who lives in a state with frequent forest fires, a little chilling to think about. Seriously, Janice Thompson did an excellent job capturing the intense thoughts and frantic desperation when fire is at your doorstep.

There was a little less mystery in Mistletoe And Mayhem than in the previous Little Red Truck Mysteries but it was no less enjoyable. Riding along with RaeLyn, Mason, and the rest of the Hadleys for that final week leading up to the amazing Christmas themed wedding filled with all things Texas and traditional was definitely fun.

The mystery thread, was still interesting as the suspects in the wildfire are not the people who might have might not normally have invited suspicion. Janice Thompson did a good job peppering clues, red herrings, and drama throughout the story and the final revelation of who-done-it.

I honestly don't know if there will be more Little Red Truck Mysteries but I know that I have liked the three that have been released. Janice Thompson does cozy mystery just as well as her romantic comedies and I try not to miss any of them. Just know that when you read Mistletoe And Mayhem you might want to have a little snack with you because these Texans really know how to eat....

In the mid-90s, as my children and I drove up to the Mabank area from our home in Houston, we saw smoke off in the distance. The closer we got to my mother and stepfather’s acreage—sixty-three gorgeous acres of cattle land—the thicker the smoke got.

When we arrived on Mom’s street the reality of what faced us was unavoidable. The property across the road, to our left, was in a roaring blaze, flames moving so fast my car could barely get past them on the narrow country road.

We miraculously made it to Mom’s driveway and went inside her home, hearts racing. In that moment, a decision was made to gather in a circle and pray. We offered up a passionate plea for the Lord’s protection then rushed outside to grab hoses to help water everything down.

As I sat to write Mistletoe and Mayhem, my latest cozy mystery from Barbour Publishing, I was faced with the memories of this terrifying trip. Just as you read in this story, firefighters got that massive blazed stopped, right at the edge of her property. And I can tell you as a first-hand witness that not a spark landed on any of us. Whenever I reflect on this event I’m reminded of God’s ultimate faithfulness. He spared us from certain catastrophe.

I can assure you, we as a family never forgot the mercy and grace of God as we faced our Isaiah 43 moment. No doubt you’ve been through a few fires, too. Fear not. The Lord is right there, ready to carry you through. You can trust Him, even in the fiery trials of life.

My Review

Will the bad guys or nature get them first?

I fell in love with Carrie Stuart Parks' riveting suspense after reading her larger novels so when I saw her name on a Love Inspired Suspense book, well, it went right up near the top of my want to read list. I knew there was no way that Escaping The Wilderness could disappoint....and I was right.

The story starts off with a rather amusing horse but, oh, does it take off from there. Before you know it our heroine and her hero are on the run facing bad guys, wild animals, blizzards, and more. It's been a little while since I've read a Love Inspired Suspense and it was fun to dive back in with an author that I really enjoy and a story that kept me on the edge of my seat. Trust me, Escaping The Wilderness is a wild ride of danger, suspense, mystery, betrayal, and secrets. Oh, and it has some lovely romantic sparks thrown in there too.

One of the things that I really liked about this book is that Carrie Stuart Parks chose to avoid the usual law enforcement or military career for one or both of her lead characters. I thought that it really added to the suspense that neither were skilled operatives but both had skills and knowledge – he in the wilderness and she in society – that help them. Speaking of the wilderness, I also loved the western Montana setting.

Escaping The Wilderness is fun relatively quick read that is well worth the time. Carrie Stuart Parks did a great job with her first foray into Love Inspired Suspense and I can't wait to read more from her....

My Review

Will she survive long enough to start the race....

I fell in love with Candace Kade's sci-fi-ish debut novel, Enhanced, thanks to the edge of your seat action and excellent worldbuilding. Somehow, the author managed to amp things up in the second book in The Hybrid series. Then comes Augmented. Just when you think that the stakes can't get any higher for Lee Urban...they do, in a really big way.

The Hybrid series has gone from strength to strength as it has progressed. It has continued to be both entertaining and engrossing for YA readers and adults, such as myself, alike. But there has been a great deal more to the story than just some really good sci-fi. In Augmented, author Candace Kade speaks through the experiences of her heroine about the broken pieces of our lives not being the end. About those broken pieces being made into something new. Different than what was before but by no means worthless.

As I've read The Hybrid series I've felt like Lee Urban has become something of a friend. Reading Augmented has been a little bittersweet for me as it is a satisfying conclusion - with a few surprises thrown in - but that is the word. Conclusion. I have to say goodbye to Lee Urban, Everest, and the other characters I've come to know. Ahh...Well...Now I must simply live in the hope of reading more from Candace Kade in the future....

Have you ever broken a cherished possession?

I have. It was my porcelain mug that I bought while traveling through Ireland. The trip was so special and that cup always brought me happy memories as I sipped tea from it.

My husband tried to fix it for me, but the mug is not the same. It now sits tucked in the back of our cupboards too broken to be used but too precious to be throw away.

Being broken doesn’t mean something—or someone—loses purpose.

In kintsugi, the Japanese art form that involves intentionally breaking tea ware, the fragments left over are pieced back together with golden filling. The final result is more beautiful than the original unblemished version ever could be.

The brokenness enhances the tea ware’s beauty.

In my novel Augmented, I wanted to draw a comparison between brokenness and beauty. Just like kintsugi takes broken pottery and turns it into something beautiful, my protagonist Urban faces her own transformation. She is hopeless and feels like she can’t pick up the shattered pieces of her life. But as she tries out for the world’s most deadly race, she learns that being broken doesn’t mean what she thinks it does.

The things that happen to us have a purpose. If we let the Creator finish His masterpiece (us) He’ll use the fragmented pieces of our lives to make a beautiful finished work of art.

Urban feels the same way, believing her brokenness defines her. But through trial and grace, she discovers what it means to be made new.

No one is too broken to be saved or redeemed.

I wrote this book for anyone who’s ever felt lost, hopeless, or broken. We can do all things through Him who gives us strength.

My Review

They took it all, now she must save them....

When I finished The Chaos Grid I thought it was a one off. Though, I certainly wanted more of the fascinating characters and futuristic Texas, I figured the story was complete. And then I saw The Crier Stone and it immediately shot way up and took a top spot spot my rather long want to read list.

And, oh, did it live up to expectation and then some! Lyndsey Lewellen deposited me back into her exquisitely crafted world of 2-headed birds, domed cities, teleportation, stunning tech, holographic clothing, robots, and oddly enough, purple cats. I couldn't put it down. All of the things that I needed to get done? Yeah, none of those things were actually done. Oh well, I had something more important to do. I had to 'help' Juniper save the Plex, her friends, and maybe her own life.

While this book is intended for a YA audience, probably middle to older end of the scale, as 30-something reader I still loved it. As I mentioned before, Lyndsey Lewellen is very skillful in her worldbuilding. She gives enough description to immerse the reader while still allowing the reader's own imagination to soar while visualizing each page. I was quite invested in this story as well. The wild differences in landscape between the desolate Grid and the glittering, though vicious, Plex provide the perfect backdrop for Juniper's emotional struggles as she grapples with 2 things that we humans find difficult – forgiveness and mercy. Wrapped within this futuristic fantasy novel is the retelling of a well known story and I found that reimagining to be very well done indeed.

Full of danger and adventure, The Crier Stone was an excellent read that I wholeheartedly give 5 stars. It is easily one of my favorite reads so far for this year. Now that I've read it, and The Chaos Grid, I will be intensely anticipating more from this author. Pretty much, ifI see her name on it I will read it....

Interview with Allen

#1. How long did it take to finish writing this book?
This book was originally planned for release in 2024, but life got really really complicated. So in the end it took about 6 months longer to ship than anticipated. The main story was very well lined out in 2023, but then 2024 just saw a lot of distractions.

#2. What do you hope your readers will take away with them when they read this book?
I’m hoping that parents, friends and teachers that don’t have ADHD take away a fresh perspective on children that do. I’m hoping they get a better picture of what it’s like to live between extremes of serious focus and complete impulsivity with little control over either.

#3. How did you name your characters?
Logan is named after the real life Logan that helped me write this book. Logan is a family friend and we spent a lot of time together in scouts and robotics club. He also is a side character in the Towers of Light Series books 5 and 6.

#4. What one piece of advice would you like to give readers?
The main piece of advice I would give related to the book is if you are a ministry leader and have children with ADHD you need to take time to understand what that is like, and then build your programs to help them better cope with the situation. Add in lots of activities that get them moving or alternately require a lot of attention, and are really engaging.

#5. Share with us a thought, Bible verse, whatever is on your mind/heart.
The underlying theme of this book is the fruits of the spirit specifically Love. While Logan is desperately in search of self-control, it is Love that wins the day in this story. So I hope readers will take away that often what we are asking for God may not give us because he knows what we really need and often he gives us that in an abundance we can’t really fathom.

As a writer, I tend to lean toward what I know for inspiration. Actual life events or people I know shape what I write about. As a ministry volunteer in church for over 15 years, I regularly saw the challenges children with ADHD or other spectrum disorders had with the church. Volunteers are ill-equipped to understand their unique needs, and many of the young boys I worked with ended up having terrible experiences at church because they just couldn’t fit in.

So when I set out to write an early chapter book for boys I wanted to find a way to shine the light of God’s truth right where they lived. Having been diagnosed with A.D.D., I understand these challenges and the general mentality. On the one hand, this can have detrimental effects when being forced to sit in a chair with nothing to do but listen; on the other hand, it can supercharge tasks that require intense focus.

I also had inspiration from the existing Towers of Light series I wrote for a middle grade audience and pre-existing characters that children love. So I worked with the real-life Logan to craft this story that exemplifies the spiritual gift of love as the antidote to the poison of the hateful strawberries. Plus, the antics of Rascal the Raccoon add just the right touch of comedy and action to keep young children turning the pages.

He began writing the Towers of Light series for his own children to help him illustrate the deep truths of the Bible in an engaging and age appropriate way. My Review

Will her tenacity & his persistence save the day...

There is very little in the realm of historical romantic fiction as delightful as diving into a Jen Turano novel. I have been a fan for over a decade, I think the first one I read was her second novel, and I am still every bit as excited for each new release.

A Lesson In Propriety had all of the wonderful things that I've come to expect from a Jen Turano novel as well as some surprises along the way. Between some small protective pets, a kidnapping, midnight hauntings, a botched proposal, and a wild carriage ride, I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish.

Drusilla and Rhenick had me laughing aloud as they made their way from suspicion to a sweet and charming romance. The two characters are perfect for each other and you can't help but fall a little bit in love with them. The great news is that this is the first book in the Merriweather Academy For Young Ladies series so I didn't have to fully say goodbye when I turned that last page.

It was a lot of fun to start a new Jen Turano series and I finished A Lesson In Propriety in record time thanks to my inability to put it down. I definitely loved this first Merriweather Academy For Young Ladies novel and now I am beyond eagerly awaiting the next book in the series....

My Review

Danger and romance ride in historical Texas....

After reading Seven Brides For Seven Texans I simply had to read Seven Brides For Seven Texas Rangers. Imagine my surprise in finding not only the almost identical author lineup, but also the same setting of Hartville, Texas. That continuity made the story even more enjoyable as old book friends blended with the new.

Seven Brides For Seven Texas Rangers was exactly the book that I needed right now. A nice mix of danger and romance in a fun Old West setting. I've been busy lately so I haven't had the time to sit down and read through an entire novel which made this 670+ page book just right with its more bite-sized novellas. Each novella is its own complete story but the overarching storyline of bringing the Markham Gang to justice tied them all together quite nicely.

As with the previous book, the authors did a good job with continuity etc. As a reader it always amazes me how multiple authors, in this case 7, can work together to create an almost seamless transition as the storyline moves forward.

Seven Brides For Seven Texas Rangers was definitely an entertaining read as it blended mystery with a western. Honestly, thanks to it containing 7 different novellas the book has a little bit of almost everything. Train robberies, hidden identities, kidnapping, betrayal, secrets, you name it. And then there is the delightful historical romance that I've come to expect from Gabrielle Meyer, Erica Vetsch, Amanda Barratt, Lorna Seilstad, Kathleen Y'Barbo, Vickie McDonough, and Susan Page Davis. These ladies really know their stuff with the genre.

Anyway, it was an enjoyable read and one I would recommend if you like historical romance and/or stories that you can read in a single sitting....

Hello! I’m Erica Vetsch, and I am thrilled that the Seven Brides for Seven Texas Rangers novella collection is being republished by Wild Heart Books. This collection, and its predecessor, Seven Brides for Seven Texans, are dear to my heart.

If you have read my previous blog post about Seven Brides for Seven Texans, you will know that all the authors in the collection worked closely together and collaborated well to bring the interconnected novellas into one cohesive story. This required lots of cooperation and communication, and a careful readthrough for continuity.

The process was so much fun that when the original publisher approached me about creating a sequel, I was eager to do so. Six out of seven of the original authors were game to try it all again, and we recruited someone to fill the vacancy left when one of the originals retired from writing fiction.

This time, however, much of the groundwork had been laid. Though we needed seven new heroes and seven new heroines, the setting and especially the town of Hartsville were already set in stone.

For Seven Brides for Seven Texas Rangers, it was again incumbent upon me to come up with a basic premise for the entire collection, in this case a band of Texas Rangers chasing a gang of bad guys, and then let the authors choose their own storylines. We communicated with one another to make certain that each story would be different, but also be part of the whole. Bank robberies, kidnappings, horse thieves, witness protection and more! All set against the backdrop of the American West.

Once again, the authors agreed to turn their mss in to me early so I could read them all for continuity, since I was the person most familiar with all the stories. I was able to make notes on each novella that helped the project editor and speed up the editorial process.

It was a joy working so closely with this group of authors. I learned so much about their processes and talents, and they established a high bar. I enjoyed each and every story in this collection, and I hope you will, too!

My Review

How far will they have go to uncover the truth....

I'll admit that I picked this book up because I've liked pretty much every title that I've read from the publisher. Warsafe turned out to be no exception. I found the story to be intriguing right from the start and that never let up all the way through the last page. The blur between fiction and reality that makes up the heart of this story from Lauren Smyth was just too interesting to put down.

The mix of familiar and sci-fi was something that I enjoyed in Warsafe. It really kept the story grounded while allowing the imagination to fully engage. Lauren Smyth's writing style and worldbuilding skills were also something I appreciated as they kept the story moving forward with no lags and made me feel like I was right there with each of the story's leads.

Aimed at mid to older teens, Lauren Smyth's Warsafe is a bit edgy in all of the best ways that make for a good Christian sci-fi or fantasy novel that can also be enjoyed by adult fans of those genres.

This was my first Lauren Smyth novel but after reading Warsafe I doubt it will be my last. It was exciting, had an interesting premise, and was just flat out a good and entertaining read....

The Mercenary House, where much of Warsafe takes place, quite literally appeared to me in a dream.

By age 12, I’d already watched way too many action-adventure movies. (Did anyone else grow up on Tom Clancy--The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games?) Most nights, I was hyped on fictional adrenaline, and I was able to lucid dream. So I got to star in highly imaginative and unrealistic versions of my favorite spy stories when I fell asleep.

That night, I found myself trapped in the basement of an eight-story house. Guards patrolled the rooms outside, and somehow I knew I had to sneak past them to reach the top floor. I also knew I was dreaming and in no real danger, which made me brave. So I crawled through air ducts, hid in shadowy corners, and darted behind turned backs. And I escaped.

The dream was so logical compared to others I’d had that it stuck in my mind. Why was I trying to get to the roof? Why did I agree to play this “game?” What was the secret behind that dilapidated, shadowy building where I’d been imprisoned?

A few years later, I started coding video games. My first full-length game featured more than 100,000 lines of code and is probably part of the reason why I’m so near-sighted. I loved the results, but not the process. More than coding, I realized I loved storytelling—weaving together sentences and images and movements that became a world on the reader’s screen.

I hadn’t forgotten my dream, but I didn’t have the Python know-how to turn it into a game. And I’d gotten sick of naming variables. (Somewhere in the source code for that first game, there’s an if-then statement oh-so-creatively named “againagainagainagainagainagainagain.” See also the classic: “help.”) What if, instead of crawling back to my code editing software, I wrote a book?

And what if that book wasn’t just about a fictional video game, but was also an exploration of morality, economics, and politics in a parallel world?

I believe that good books don’t answer questions; they make you ask new ones. They draw you into a situation you’ve never experienced and force you to take sides, rooting for or against characters, judging or supporting their choices. If you could stop a catastrophe by sacrificing a few people, would you do it? If you were offered control over someone’s life, would you take it?

That’s the central dilemma of Warsafe. What you choose, who you agree with is up to you. Like a real video game, Warsafe lets you confront the same choices as the characters and work your way out of the puzzle—if you can do it without compromising your morality.

Remember Warsafe’s motto: Safety requires the many to sacrifice the one.

My Review

Soap, goats, and a childhood promise....

It's been awhile since I've read such a sweet romance story and I can tell you that it was high time that I did. The Amish Bachelor's Promise was the perfect way to spend an afternoon. It had me smiling and even laughing at the antics of a certain small goat.

I truly liked Evie and Freeman from the very start of the book. Evie doesn't let her physical disability stop her and Freeman is such a genuinely caring person. I was honestly surprised at just how much I was caught up in their story and how invested I was in the outcome of such a quick read.

Amy Lillard has a charming story in this 200+ page book and it was a definitely enjoyable read. The characters are likable and you can't help but root for these two friends to overcome the obstacles potentially keeping them apart.

If you are looking for a cute story and a quick read with an Amish theme The Amish Bachelor's Promise from Amy Lillard is a great choice....

Interview with Karen

#1. What was the inspiration behind this book?
My father was a pastor who had a passion for God’s word. He encouraged his congregation to read the Bible, but without tepid success. A lot of people started yearly plans but dropped out when they got behind or when they hit Leviticus. Those who pushed through often didn’t remember or understand what they read. But then he started a small Bible Study with a few folks who committed to reading one chapter a day. He prepared a one-page devotional that gave insight into their daily readings and discovered people were not only absorbing what they read but were experiencing God in exciting ways. They brought their friends and within two years more than two hundred people were meeting together weekly to read through the Bible. It takes about three years and three months to read the Bible through if you read a chapter a day, but people stuck with it. That group read through the Bible 6 times. I saw this. I had already been writing and was on a fiction track but I kept being drawn back to my father’s vision. We had many discussions around how we could help more people discover the treasures in God’s book. I was convinced his approach was a good one. When I graduated from seminary and was praying about how to best use my writing for God’s glory, I realized that I could combine my love of storytelling with my love of Scripture by adapting my father’s template. With his blessing, I took his idea as the foundation and began writing a series of daily Bible readings that were story-driven.

#2. What new or interesting things did you learn while researching for this book?
That Genesis and Exodus are much more contemporary than we think.
A lot of people hesitate to read the Old Testament because they think it’s not relevant. But Genesis is about new beginnings, something we all have needed at some point. Exodus is about freedom—freedom from external forces and freedom from internal pressures that keep us from flourishing like our mindsets, addictions, and broken relationships. The first two books of the Bible—Genesis and Exodus—identify all that enslaves us and tell us there is a way out. A way that brings life, that offers a chance to begin again, that redeems what we’ve lost. You can’t get more relevant than that.

#3. What drew you to take on this topic through non-fiction versus fiction?
Since the book is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of Scripture, it had to be non-fiction, however, what makes the Bible Companion unique is that I combine non-fiction and fiction techniques. I use the techniques of fiction storytelling such as character development and drama to highlight the Bible’s themes and message.

#4. Did you have a specific demographic in mind while writing this book?
Absolutely. I write for two audiences:

the person who wants to read through the Bible, believes every word of it has been given for our benefit, but has been unable to read it all the way through;
the person who struggle with their faith, hopes the Bible can help them, but feels too overwhelmed and ill-equipped to tackle it on their own.

#5. What do you hope your readers will remember after finishing this book?
That God is present and active in our lives, creating, rescuing, and transforming us for His glory and for our flourishing.

#6. Share with us a thought, Bible verse, whatever is on your mind/heart.
“Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.” Psalm 119:18.
Working in the Bible all the time, it’s easy to slip into learning ABOUT God rather than experience Him. This verse helps me remember why I wrote the Bible Companion. I’m praying that I and those I write for will find Jesus in the Bible, the beautiful book He’s written and preserved for us. Jesus is there, in the stories—the law—the warnings—the celebrations—but unless the Holy Spirit opens our eyes, we won’t see Him. “Open my eyes” can mean a lot of different things such as: “make me aware,” “shake me out of complacency,” and “open my heart.” Every time I go to the Scriptures, I pray that God will open my eyes to what He is saying. That I will see myself and my problems from His perspective. That I will see Him for who He is. That I will see His words as wonderful, even they’re it’s hard. I’m changed when I meet Jesus in Scriptures. That transformation is what I try to tell others is possible.

A Father-Daughter Legacy: The Bible Companion Series

In 1993, my father, Pastor Floyd Westbrook challenged a group of men and women from his weekly Bible study to join him in reading the Bible from cover to cover. He found if he wrote short daily lessons for each chapter, people stayed engaged and were transformed by the Scripture they read. His work, though enjoyed by hundreds, was never widely published.

I shared his passion for making God’s word accessible to people who found it hard to understand parts of the Bible, couldn’t keep up with the schedule, or couldn’t relate Scripture to their journey. Later, after I completed degrees in theology and creative writing, we realized combining storytelling with his format could help people overcome the most common barriers to Bible reading. With his blessing, I began working on The Bible Companion. The result is a story-rich study which is simple, flexible, yet rich in content.

The Bible Companion Book 1 Genesis–Exodus is the first of twelve books that tracks God story from creation to the end of time. God, who tells His story through families, has graciously given me the privilege of carrying on my father’s legacy through The Bible Companion series.

My Review

Danger comes in many forms....

I got hooked on Chawna Schroeder's fiction awhile back when I read The Vault Between Spaces so I've been looking forward to Illuminary since first hearing about it. As expected it turned out to be a great start to the intriguingly titled The Sceptre & The Stylus series.

With her trademark attention to detail and excellent fantasy worldbuilding skills, Chawna Schroeder introduces an interesting tale with nods to the Bible and Frances Hodgson Burnett's A Little Princess. I found the story to be a faster read than even I expected as my curiosity kept me turning those pages even when I should have headed off for bed.

I was excited to find out that Illuminary is the first book in a planned trilogy as that means I will get the chance to revisit The Sceptre & The Stylus characters again instead of having to say goodbye what feels like too soon.

Great for older YA readers, Illuminary can also entertain adults, such as myself, equally as well. The addition of things like trains and automatons makes The Sceptre & The Stylus trilogy from Chawna Schroeder even more interesting. I enjoyed this first book in the series and now I am definitely looking forward to the next book so I can find out where Yosarai and Xander will find themselves next....

Why I Love “A Little Princess”

Illuminary begins a fantasy trilogy loosely inspired by A Little Princess. This classic novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett is a book I’ve read almost annually since I was a preteen, with some years containing two or more readings. It is a story that never fails to enchant me no matter how often I read it, and it carries for me the same magic that Anne of Green Gables has for many other girls.

Yet unlike Anne, who endears herself to almost all who meet her, the young heroine of A Little Princess, Sara Crewe, is known to be a somewhat divisive character—the kind you either adore or hate the moment you meet her, much like the characters within the story itself. So, what draws me back to this young protagonist again and again?

The reasons are many. I love her imagination, her intelligence, her ability for the perfect comeback, her courage in the face of horrifying circumstances, her uniqueness—all characteristics that I’ve tried to endow upon the heroine of Illuminary to some extent.

But I think the thing I hope my heroine in Illuminary emulates most is Sara’s unshakeable character. For Sara is a principled young lady, and no matter what is thrown at her, she holds onto those principles without wavering.

Often in literature, it seems like the good, principled characters, when they are faced with great difficulty, end up struggling with their principles, debating whether they are good or worthwhile. In some stories, those characters even outright reject those principles for a time.

While these are good and needed stories to tell, sometimes they are portrayed as the only accurate arcs for such characters—as if characters holding onto their principles and maintaining their integrity is somehow unrealistic. A charge originating, I suppose, from those too sweet, too perfect characters found in morality tales.

Yet while such characters of integrity and principle might be rare, Scripture shows us that hard times don’t have to shake one’s principles or undermine one’s integrity. Both Joseph in the book of Genesis and Daniel in the book bearing his name exemplify this kind of life. And we see this same principled integrity in Sara Crewe.

It is not that she is some perfectly sweet heroine. Sara has a temper, struggles with some uncharitable thoughts toward others, and even misjudges another character terribly. Nor does she fail to grow. The Sara at the end of the story is definitely a more mature, thoughtful, and understanding girl than the one who began the tale.

But the core essence of her character—her politeness, generosity, and compassion as summarized by her wish to act like a princess—does not change in the story. The core characteristics that make Sara Crewe, Sara Crewe, are unshaken. They may grow and expand with the character, but these essential attributes characterize her throughout the entire story. Even in her darkest moments she holds fast to them.

That is both hopeful and encouraging. For we all will face hard and difficult times. A Little Princess doesn’t deny that reality. Rather, it says that those hard times don’t have to destroy us and that holding onto one’s integrity, one’s faith, is possible.

For me, that is what makes Sara Crewe and A Little Princess truly magical—and what I hope will make Illuminary magical for its readers.

Interview with Sarah

#1. What was the inspiration behind this book?
When I got the idea for this book, it was when I was reading about God trusting us. For some reason, I had always focused on trusting God – but never the reciprocal. When I truly understood that God trusts me, it changed the way I viewed challenges and my mission. I knew God trusted me in what I was doing and how I was doing things. That gave me such confidence and drew me closer to Him like never before. I hope readers have the same response to this book!

#2. What part of the writing process do you like the least?
I am not a fan of editing. I do alright the first time through and send it to my editor. After that, I tend to have trouble focusing and working through the points that my editor made about the book. Of course, sometimes the comments are a real challenge, and then I enjoy it, but generally I have a hard time with edits.

#3. What drew you to take on this topic through non-fiction versus fiction?
I have had an inkling of an idea for a fiction book, but I have had more training and experience in teaching than in fiction. Teaching comes more naturally to me than telling a story. My editor always encourages me to tell stories to illustrate concepts in my books, and it is the thing I struggle most with. So, nonfiction is my thing.

#4. What people influenced you the most while writing about this topic?
I have enjoyed reading about relational theology over recent years. There are a number of authors who fall into this field and their books have all been pretty inspiring (that I have read). One is Thomas Oord and another is Jason Clark. Amy-Jill Levine has been influential is getting me to question what I’ve been told about the Bible and God and find the answers myself. All combined, the topic of trusting God is part of a mutual relationship that I have struggled with and found some clarity in these ideas. I hope readers do, too!

#5. What do you hope your readers will remember after finishing this book?
When I wrote this book, I wanted readers to know deeply how much God loves them, wants to interact with them and trusts them to carry out his work; and his work is everything we do, from brushing our teeth or driving the kids to school to volunteering at the food bank. God is interested in all of it and believes in us.

Our Trustworthy God is the result of years of seeking. I knew I was supposed to trust God… but. I struggled with the buts of trusting God. There are too many to name, and they usually start with “why?” Some examples are when good people have bad things happen to them, why? When someone we love has died too soon, when our best friend gets cancer, when a hurricane strikes and whole towns are lost. For me, it was cancer in the family and even starting my own business. I couldn’t really understand, or “feel” that everything was working out for my good. Trusting God wasn’t exactly an on-command reflex when I thought of these things. It was easier to wonder where God was rather than trust that he IS and will always be here.

But I wanted more than to believe he was here, I wanted to know deeply that God was working for my good, even when all I saw was destruction and evil. So, I spent a year dedicated to digging in and seeking to understand what trusting God really means. I wanted to know how trustworthy God is, all the time. I didn’t want that knowledge to remain in my head, but I wanted it in my heart. I wanted it to be the automatic reflex when bad things happen that I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that God was in that situation and working for my good.

What I found surprised me. Don’t misunderstand, more than ever before, I know God IS with me in every circumstance and he IS working for my well-being. He loves me deeply. What surprised me was that God trusts me as well and his power is unlike anything I could imagine.

A deep discussion of relationship and trusting God is what came out of that search to understand how I could trust the unseen God in an evil world, and I had to share it. Because I know my God is good and he is trustworthy. He is working for your good. He loves you, joyfully engages with you, and he trusts you.

My Review

What will she be willing to risk....

I fell in love with Rachelle Nelson's writing style when I read her debut novel. When I saw her name on the cover of Embergold I didn't even really read the blurb because I already knew I wanted to read it.

And it did not disappoint. Though, how could a story with dragons ever be a disappointment. With some Beauty And The Beast vibes Embergold kept me reading all afternoon and even while I was eating dinner.

Rachelle Nelson is one of those with the rare talent of being able to describe an entire location or even an event with just a few words. The simplicity of description is the beauty of it and you can completely visualize every aspect of what is going on on the page in front of you. I absolutely love it when an author can help your imagination soar rather than leading you in a single narrow vision.

Anyway, Embergold was a wonderful read. It has everything you want to see in a clean fantasy and even a few surprises along the way. It completely captivated me from the moments of humor to the darker ones of pain and heartbreak. The splash of romance is also nicely done and it is a part of the story rather than taking it over.

Whether you are an adult reader like me who just enjoys a good clean fantasy read or if you know a teen reader I would definitely recommend Embergold. Honestly, I'd recommend anything by Rachelle Nelson and as for myself I will be anxiously anticipating reading more from her...

For the past decade or so, I have been a volunteer youth leader for teen groups. Some of my favorite memories have come from that position. Camp pranks, hilarious games involving edible mealworms, scavenger hunts, singing together at the top of our lungs, and speaking life into the lives of young women. When a girl sees herself through the eyes of Jesus, everything changes.

Some of my hardest moments have come from being a youth leader, too. There’s a kind of hurt that happens when we watch someone suffer, and we cannot take the suffering away. I have cried tears with teens who have been wounded by betrayal, carelessness, and abandonment. Those wounds go deeper when they come from a parent.

The truth is, God is the only perfect father, and we’re meant to be parented by Him. Learning to trust Him is a process, even if we had a pretty great (if imperfect) example of an earthly dad. But we live in a fatherless generation, when so many have experienced separation and pain in their family from divorce, or addiction, or generational cycles of pain. I’ve seen what that kind of pain can do to a heart, and how trusting others becomes almost impossible.

Almost.

Embergold is a story about betrayal and abandonment. It’s about two young people who never expected to find kindness in a harsh world. It’s about the healing of hearts.

I wrote it for myself, to remember what is possible. I wrote it for the young people I have loved. And for the parents who are still recovering from their childhoods.

Sin and brokenness happen in community. But, the amazing thing is, God designed the healing to happen in community too, among people. We need each other.
