American Underdog, in theaters everywhere Christmas Day!
It may seem a little strange for me to be reviewing a sports movie when my family has never really been into sports. But, that's not why I wanted to watch this movie at all. The title sums up what intrigued me about the film, American Underdog. Then I saw that it was based on a true story I was all in. And hey, who doesn't love Facing The Giants or The Mighty Ducks, even if they aren't sports fans? I'll admit that I was also curious to see Anna Paquin all grown up from her Fly Away Home days. Oh, gosh, have I seriously outed what age group I'm in by mentioning some of these movies that I obviously watched as a kid...
Interestingly, American Underdog turned out to not be just a football movie but rather a story about not giving up even when the deck is stacked against you, it's about supporting the people you love and making sacrifices for them, and it's about overcoming and beating the odds. I watched this movie with my family and I think each of us took a little something different out of it. There was humor, romance, drama, and the best part was that it's a true story. Yeah, it may have gotten a little edgy in spots but so is real life and I liked the movie all the better for it.
The decision to make the film more inspirational than overtly Christian was, I think, a good call and it opens the doors for more people to watch it. I for one, enjoyed having the chance to get into the story without a ton of soapboxing. American Underdog was a good movie to watch with the your family, particularly your older kids.
As to the more technical aspects of the movie.... I was quite impressed. The filming was good and the actors were well chosen and I even found myself getting a little nostalgic for the 90s as I saw the old familiar technology and clothing and hairstyles... I also enjoyed how they mixed in some actual footage with a deft hand. All in all, American Underdog was pretty good movie that can easily be enjoyed by sports fans and not sports fans alike...
