Wow! I thought the first book in The Fae Dynasty duology was good...but this, this I think may have been even better. Lethal Kings is one wild ride of intrigue, betrayal, mystery, and sacrifice – with just a touch of romance. Victoria McCombs kept me on the edge of my seat as Thea plays a dangerous game with the highest of all stakes – her life and that of the other Mortal Queens....
Lethal Kings and The Fae Dynasty duology is everything that I love about the fantasy sub-genre. It is deliciously dark as all stories featuring the devious, manipulative, and sometimes capricious fae should be. The twists and turns keep you guessing as you second guess the motives of pretty much every single character. And the best part? You get to read all of that without the objectionable content that often comes with stories of the fae realms.
Victoria McCombs is a definite master of storytelling and worldbuilding. Both the fae and mortal realms are vividly depicted and the little things that make a story like this one great – things like history, culture, and rules of magic – are not skimped upon. The past and present are cleverly woven together so that there is a purpose and a reason for everything and each part completes the other.
As you can tell I loved both of The Fae Dynasty books and I am now a confirmed fan of Victoria McCombs. Whether you are an adult or teen who loves fantasy and/or fae fiction I definitely recommend Lethal Kings and its predecessor as they are a tale you won't be able to put down....
Tell Tale Book Reviews gives Lethal Kings by Victoria McCombs a 5 Bark rating.
More from Victoria
It was less plot and structure, and more—what kind of book do I want to write?
I wanted riddles for them to solve, which created the Gamemaster character. I wanted a healthy family aspect, which began the process of repairing the relationships I’d burned in book one. And I wanted a character who knew exactly what she wanted and never waivered from that. Other scenes came from these wishes, like the chess game where the players are the chess pieces, and the War of Hearts played in the labyrinth.
Together, I think it blended nicely, and I can’t wait for readers to get ahold of it!
Victoria McCombs is the author of The Storyteller Series, The Royal Rose Chronicles, and The Fae Dynasty duology, with hopefully many more to come. She survives on hazelnut coffee, 20-minute naps, and a healthy fear of her deadlines, all while raising four wildlings with her husband in Omaha, Nebraska. |
