Ma and Pa Kettle receive a special letter. Elizabeth (Barbara Brown) and John (Ray Collins) have sent them tickets to New York and Paris, France. The hometown Indians, Geoduck (Oliver Blake) and Crowbar (Teddy Hart) will take care of the children. So off they fly to Paris. Unfortunately, Ma and Pa get mixed-up in a kettle of trouble. Pa accepts a mysterious letter that they must deliver to someone. There are two bad people that want the envelope too, trying to keep it from the police. Ma and Pa will do the right thing and now they can help catch the spies, with surveillance provided. This movie is a fun spy-spoof. It is full of the things we have come to expect from the Kettles, silly dialogue, slap-stick, some tender moments, and a lot of laughs. Pa manages to get some surprisingly wise comments in, as usual. This movie actually is more about Ma & Pa than the family. We get to see just how much Pa really does love Ma, and what lengths he will go to to save her. Pa is also quite Patriotic, he learns about the spies and is determined to be the bait to bring them in. Ma and her sense of justice should not be forgotten either, what happens in the French restaurant is hilarious! If you need an hour and a half or so of good, old fashioned, French fun than this movie is for you! 76 Minutes | Principal Cast Marjorie Main ... Phoebe 'Ma' Kettle Percy Kilbride ... Frank 'Pa' Kettle Ray Collins ... Jonathan Parker Bodil Miller ... Inez Kraft Sig Ruman ... Cyrus Kraft Barbara Brown ... Elizabeth Parker Filming Locations: Courthouse Square, Backlot, Universal Studios - 100 Universal City Plaza, Universal City, California, USA Quotes Phoebe 'Ma' Kettle: It'll be nice acting like those Paris-ites! Phoebe 'Ma' Kettle: We're going to have culture in this house if i have to beat it into 'em! Phoebe 'Ma' Kettle: [at the top of her lungs] Come and get it! |

#1. What was the inspiration for Mother Of Pearl? I write women’s fiction, with a focus on poignant and emotionally compelling stories about women in life-changing circumstances. I knew my first novel would focus on mothering and the perils women face in this role, especially during the teen years. I didn’t even know how many things there were to be afraid of until I had my first child. From the moment the nurse placed that tiny infant in my arms, a fierce need to protect bubbled from the deepest part of me. As a novelist, I asked the question: What would a mother do if suddenly life took a turn and she learned the child she thought she’d protected had fallen into the hands of someone unsafe? And what if she found out too late? Early, when the inception of this story was still noodling in my brain, I saw a sadly recurring event on the news, the story of a coach who had inappropriately been involved with a teenager. While the cameras honed on the major players, I couldn’t help but wonder if the girl’s mother stood just out of view. What was she feeling? #2. How long did it take to finish writing this book? From start to finish, the manuscript took me just over six months to complete. #3. Do you have favorite character(s) in Mother Of Pearl? The entire story is told through the eyes of Barrie Graeber, the mother. But, as I was writing, I found my heart leaning toward her husband, Steve. Like many men, he doesn’t deal with emotions easily. When he can’t “fix” the situation their family faces, he chooses to tuck his feelings and move on. When Barrie can’t follow suit, tensions develop in their marriage. And, isn’t it true? Sometimes in our pain, we end up hurting the ones we love most. (Readers: when you meet Steve’s mother in the novel, write and tell me how you think she played into Steve’s inability to tackle his pain and be there for Barrie.) I also have a tender spot for Aaron, the Graeber’s young son. In many ways, his new faith and fresh perspective provides a beacon for the entire family as they maneuver through some very dark days. #4. What do you hope your readers will take away with them when they read this book? People have many layers, and never more than in family dynamics and hard times. I’m intrigued with the coping mechanisms we employ to fill our empty places, the chasm only God can fill. When readers find themselves in the deep places in life, I hope they will think of Barrie Graeber and remember that life-changing circumstances can be conduits to His majesty. _#5. What made you choose the specific location(s) for this book? I set the book in Falcon, Idaho—a fictional community where everyone knows everybody else and much of the social aspect of its’ residents revolves around school activities and football. I grew up near Sun Valley and we raised our boys in Boise. I knew the area well and was convinced no better place would suit my story. #6. How did you name your characters? I keep a running list of names I come across, ones I want to use in future stories. The main character, Barrie, was named after a woman attorney I worked with. I loved her name. #7. Tell us something funny, sad, embarrassing, whatever, that happened involving this book. Until I completed my research, I don’t think I was aware how prevalent this situation is in real life, where adults cross proper boundaries and engage in inappropriate relationships with minors. I spent time with Dr. Sherry Bithell, author of Educator Sexual Abuse, A Guide for Prevention in The Schools (Tudor House Publishing, 1991). Her book was cited in a U.S. Government study report on the issue. Her work helped me to understand how blurred the lines get in some situations and how often perpetrators are allowed to quietly resign and move to a new school, especially coaches. Nearly a year after I turned in my manuscript to my publisher, the Sandusky/Penn State situation hit the news—another sad reminder of how often people look the other way when a sports program is at risk. I’m not necessarily a “soap-box” novelist. I have no agenda. But, I would not be sad if readers close the last page of MOTHER OF PEARL with more understanding and a desire to keep an eye out for our kids. Bonus. Share with us a thought, Bible verse, whatever is on your mind/heart. St. Augustine tells my own faith story with this quote: “In my deepest wound, I saw your glory and it dazzled me.” I try to paint that sentiment on every page, but in a subtle manner. I want my books to appeal to all kinds of readers – those who sit on church pews and barstools alike. | MOTHER OF PEARL tells the emotionally compelling story of a high school counselor who discovers her own teenage daughter had an inappropriate relationship with the football coach . . . and how she risks everything to bring him to justice. -From the back cover- Daria’s new home with Lucas in Ephesus both beguiles and confounds her, until she meets followers of The Way. Her past has taught her that evil is real, that it can consume a person. She saw it happen with her husband, before he took his own life. Widowed but well-educated, Daria becomes a tutor to Lucas, a rich traveling merchant from Ephesus. There she discovers evil has a strong foothold and that Lucas himself seems drawn to evil and sorcery. As her relationship with her employer grows, she fears that she will be unable to pull him from demonic influence. Tension in the city is about to erupt, as a new sect called The Way continues to draw followers. The man Paul leads a movement against the economic and political strength of the city, found in its goddess cult. When she learns more of the ways of the Christians and their ability to defeat evil, she begins to have hope, but when Lucas is arrested and jailed for a brutal crime, it seems not even the Christians can help. Tensions escalate in the city until thousands are pouring into the arena to protest the influence of the Christians, and a plot to kill Paul is underway. When Lucas’s execution is scheduled, Daria must find a way to prove his innocence, save his life, and help her new friends before everyone she loves is destroyed. | Publication Date: March 12, 2013 Publisher: Thomas Nelson ISBN-10: 1613753551 ISBN-13: 978-1613753552 Find out more about So Shines The Night http://tracyhigley.com/books/so-shines-the-night Bio Tracy L. So Shines The Night 1. What inspired you to write this book? I’ve been writing about the Seven Wonders for awhile now, and when it came time to write about the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, it as a no-brainer that the action in Acts 19 would form the basis for the conflict of the story. From there, I had fun bringing it all to life! 2. What inspired the theme of So Shines The Night? The idea of community is dear to my heart, and the struggle we all have to not live in isolation. I wanted to take a look at two people struggling to do the right thing, but going about it the wrong way because they were isolated both from other people and from God, and to see what would happen when they brushed up against a community like the first century church. 3. How long did it take to complete this story from start to finish? Was that about an average amount of time? This story took about five months, which is just a little shorter than average. I usually like to spend six to eight months on a book, but sometimes life intervenes! 4. Do you and the main character have anything in common? Daria is very independent, and thinks she can get things done on her own. It’s hard for her to ask for help. I can relate! 5. What is something new you learned while doing research for So Shines the Night? That’s a tough one, because there were so many things! The whole city of Ephesus is such an interesting study. Because the river that fed into the harbor carried so much silt with it, the harbor eventually became too clogged for ships and the people basically abandoned the city. This rarely happens in the ancient world – most ancient cities, like Rome, are a mix of ancient, medieval and modern and you have to travel around to the pockets of ancient monuments that are left. In Ephesus, all you have is the ancient city, so it has this frozen-in-time feeling like Pompeii, which I loved. 6. How was the experience of writing So Shines the Night, compared to your other Seven Wonders novels? It was much the same, with the addition of really being able to picture the city itself, as I could with Pompeii, after having walked the streets that are still so intact. It was also fun bringing in the “guest characters” from the book of Acts, and even an appearance of some characters from another novel (I’m not saying who – you’ll have to figure it out!) 7. What do you hope people will take away from this story? There are a number of themes I explored here, so it will vary from person to person, depending on where they are on their journey. I hope people will get a sense of the reality of the first century church, of Paul as a man. I want people to see that the love God has for us makes us secure, and that from that foundation we can risk to love others. I want readers to long for a sense of community that is found in the church of Ephesus. Ephesus 8. When you visited Ephesus, what was it like to be in the same city that Paul ministered in centuries ago? It was thrilling, to be succinct. There is a sense of “this is real – this really happened” that sweeps over you and pulls you back in time and into the world of the Scripture in a new and fresh way. I loved it. 9. While visiting modern day Ephesus, could you really get a "feel" for what it was like in Paul's time? Yes, the streets and buildings are in ruins, of course, but there is plenty there to know what the different buildings were used for and to picture the streets full of townspeople and the shops and temples being used. You can see mosaics and writing and all kinds of “daily life” things that make it easy to picture the city in its heyday. 10. What is the condition of the Ephesian church today? Ephesus was eventually abandoned as a city because the harbor became clogged with silt, so there is no real city or church there today. The nearest city is Selçuk, which is a predominantly Muslim population. I did a quick Google search in answering your question, and came up with this page, which is really cool: http://www.worshipinephesus.com/ 11. What influence of the Ephesian church do you see on the culture in that area? Well, the Temple of Artemis is in ruins, and certainly Christianity came to that part of the world during the medieval period. These days, the Christians are again the minority, but I am sure they are working hard to share the love of Christ with their neighbors. | Tracy, herself. 12. What are your 5 favorite things, excluding your family? Dark chocolate, BBQ chicken pizza, a good book, foreign travel, a movie that makes me cry. 13. You are not only a writer but also run your own business. When do you find time to write? Over the years, the only way I’ve found time to write is by making it a priority. Sometimes other parts of my life didn’t get the attention they wanted/deserved. Lately, I’ve been finding that rising early (which is not natural for me) and writing from 5 AM to about 8:30 AM is working really well, and leaves the rest of the day for business and life-stuff. 14. What's one thing on your bucket list (even if you don't have an official "list")? I think I might like to skydive someday. I’ve never admitted that before! (And now I’m terrified.) 15. If you could travel through time to see any of the seven wonders, which would you choose. Even though the Great Pyramid of Giza (Egypt) is the only one of the Seven Wonders still intact, I would still choose that one – to travel back and see it in its glory, to see the people and the culture… ah, that would be amazing. 16. What made you interested in writing ancient history fiction? I’m not sure! It evolved in my mind, and I suppose it was the tie-in to biblical history, to the time period which informed my faith and held so many stories I already knew and loved. But I’ve never been content to look at Scripture through the single historical lens of the Judea. I’ve always wanted to see the Old and New Testament periods through the eyes of the world outside the Jewish people, from the pagan perspective. Her writing. 17. What is your favorite thing about writing? You. Seriously, writing is an isolated and lonely profession at times. I spend a lot of time in my office alone, working to put together stories that people will love, and that will touch their hearts. When I hear from readers, start to see the reaction to a new book, that is my favorite thing about the process. 18. How do you pick your character names? It’s always hard. I want them to be historically accurate, but I also want people to feel connected to the characters and that can’t happen if they can’t pronounce the person’s name. I comb through historical name lists on the internet, looking for ones that aren’t too wacky! 19. How do you do your research? It’s a multi-tiered approach, with very basic research at first (sometimes even juvenile non-fiction), to get a high-level view, then going deeper into the specific days/years I’ll be writing about, and then getting a broad view of the daily life and culture through dusty textbooks. All of this goes into my “notebook” and inspires specific plots and scenes. As I am actually writing the first draft, I often leave placeholders where more specific research is needed, like an XX where a number or detail should go. At the end, I go back and find all those placeholders and research the details, often online where it’s much easier to search for very specific information. 20. Your books remind me of a time machine, whereas the readers are transported into the pages. How do you make the stories seem so real and life like? Thank you so much for saying that! It is exactly what I aspire to, so you’ve made my day! I don’t have a simple answer, except to say that there’s nothing in the world I’d like more than a time machine, so it’s definitely a priority. One thing that I do before I sit down to write a scene is to take some time walking around in it in my head, trying to really experience the sensory of the scene – the sounds, smells, tastes, textures, colors, temperature, and spatial details. If I don’t do that exercise, often those things don’t make it to the page. But when I do, I believe it helps bring the scene to life. 21. Can you share anything about your future projects? The best way to get a sense of what I’m working on now would be to visit this page: http://tracyhigley.com/books/work-in-progress/ Although, don’t hold me to all those thoughts about the book I haven’t started yet – who knows where that will go! |
At one of his many visits to his doctor, hypochondriac George Kimball mistakes a dying man's diagnosis for his own and believes he only has about two more weeks to live. Wanting to take care of his wife Judy, he doesn't tell her and tries to find her a new husband. When he finally does tell her, she quickly finds out he's not dying at all (while he doesn't) and she believes it's just a lame excuse to hide an affair, so she decides to leave him. This movie really is a comedy of errors. Everyone is assuming They know the truth, when in fact no one does! Rock and Doris at their comedic best! Of the three films Doris Day and Rock Hudson made together I think this one is my favorite. This movie is lightweight, enjoyable, and perfect for curling up and watching on a day that you want to laugh but not think overly hard. The moral of this story: Never assume anything... except that Doris and Rock will deliver a fun and funny story. 100 Minutes | Principal Cast Rock Hudson ... George Doris Day ... Judy Tony Randall ... Arnold Paul Lynde ... Mr. Akins Hal March ... Winston Burr Edward Andrews ... Dr. Morrissey Filming Locations: Colonial Street, Backlot, Universal Studios - 100 Universal City Plaza, Universal City, California, USA Quotes George Kimball: When a man's wife thinks he's having an affair, how can he convince her he's not? Arnold Nash: He can't. George Kimball: But I'm not having one! Arnold Nash: Doesn't make any difference. George Kimball: Isn't a man innocent until proven guilty? Arnold Nash: Look, you're dealing with your wife. You can forget the Constitution. Judy: When he tells me he's dying and he doesn't DIE... wouldn't he know that I'd get SUSPICIOUS? |

A winner of six Oscars including Best Picture. Gene Kelly plays Jerry Mulligan, a former American GI trying to make a living in France as an artist after the war. He's taken on by an American patron of the arts (Nina Foch) who has other intentions, but he falls in love with a local girl (Leslie Caron in her debut) who happens to be the intended of a Parisian cabaret performer (Georges Guetary). It is an elaborate showcase of Kelly's dancing and choreography, he received an honorary Oscar that year for it. I have to admit that I usually prefer Fred Astaire to Gene Kelly, but.... I really enjoyed this movie! The dancing is lovely, the costumes are gorgeous, the acting is good, the setting is Paris need I say more? I like old musicals and this is one of the better ones I have seen. No opera-voice-wannabe's here, just good old fashioned American tap dancing and music. If you want to settle down for an evening of good old fashioned musical fun than this is the movie for you.... Hey, the guy even gets the girl in the end ;) 113 Minutes | Principal Cast Gene Kelly ... Jerry Mulligan Leslie Caron ... Lise Bouvier Oscar Levant ... Adam Cook Georges Guétary ... -From the back cover- A bend in the road can be daunting ...or the beginning of everything Aaron Troyer simply wants to farm in Indiana like his dat and grossdaddi before him, but instead he finds himself traveling to Wisconsin to oversee an uncle's small group of Plain cabins nestled along the banks of Pebble Creek. That also means he must work with the cabins' lovely but stubborn housekeeper, Lydia Fisher Lydia is the most outspoken Amish woman Aaron has ever met, and she has strong opinions about how the guest cabins are to be run. She also desperately needs her job, and to keep it she must temper her reaction to her new employer. Though sparks fly at first, when danger unexpectedly overtakes them, nothing is more important to Aaron than making sure Lydia is safe. Together they work to make the vacation property profitable, but can they find out who is causing trouble before damage is done? And can Lydia guard her heart, knowing that Aaron is biding his time before he can return home to his farm? Or is her dream of a home of her own more than just a wish and a prayer? Another enjoyable story from one of the top Amish Fiction authors. One of the nicest things about this book was getting to check in with characters from A Promise For Miriam and getting to see how they are doing. Miriam and Gabe are now married and are building a family. Esther (formerly worked with Miriam at the Plain school) is also married and has a little one. Miriam's parents are still dispensing wisdom and dote on their granddaughter-by-marriage, Gracie. I won't spoil any surprises but the Kings and Yoder family have more happiness and heartache ahead in this story. I have to admit that, at first, I didn't particularly like Aaron (the hero). He came across as an immature brat, but.... That didn't last, through the book he grows and matures under the responsibility of the cabins and with the help/advice of Gabe and Miriam's brother, David. Hard work and good friends help Aaron grow up in a most satisfying way. | This Book earned a 4 Bark rating! Reading and history have been my passion since early childhood when my parents encouraged both. I was introduced to Christian fiction around age 4-5 while listening to radio drama adaptations of books by great authors including Janette Oke. I have been a voracious reader and avid library patron ever since. I started Tell Tale Book Reviews in December 2012. I am also an active volunteer in the areas I hold most dear, library, museum, and pets. Hobbies include a small bead jewelry business, watching classic movies/ TV, listening to Irish/Celtic music, and autograph collecting.
