Esther has no memory of her parents. She only knows they died protecting her. Knows that they were heroes. In the basement of the local synagogue, her father and mother, a doctor and nurse, had set up a triage center for wounded soldiers. They brought Esther to work with them, believing the synagogue to be one of the safest places during a war. After all, a house of worship was a refuge that even the enemy respected.

But when the synagogue takes a direct hit, both parents lose their life. If not for her father’s body protecting her own, Esther would have perished as well.

Although she wishes things had turned out differently, she could not imagine loving her parents any more fiercely than she loved her Uncle Mordecai. He had given everything up to provide Esther with a loving, secure home—including his eligible years as a bachelor.

Now soldiers have come to their obscure little farm, learning from locals that her beauty must be included in the upcoming pageant to find King Xerxes a new wife. Though Mordecai has raised Esther to mistrust the government, would it be so terrible to be queen? Mightn’t she help the people of the realm of Susa—especially those in her hometown of Parthia—and be an influence for good?

But what about Mordecai’s wishes? Of course she trusts her uncle, but why--why—would he send her into the fearsome clutches of dragons? There doesn’t seem to be an easy answer or an easy choice. One thing is certain, her faith must extend beyond that of her uncle and find its rest in the hands of a sovereign God.

Mordecai has fought hard for the private, self sufficient life he lives with his orphaned niece Esther. Fighting, in one way or another, has always been a part of his life—even before the Wizard’s War took Esther’s parents.

Trained as a soldier, Mordecai rose through the military ranks thanks to his agility and strength, both of body and mind. Eventually, he became one of the elite royal guards, assigned to protect Prince Xerxes years before he became king. In the course of Mordecai’s exemplary military career, he managed to make one enemy in his time as a soldier: Haman.

Mordecai loathed the way Haman exploited his power in every situation. Yet he did it in such a way to get rewarded, rather than punished. When the war came to an end, Mordecai was more than happy to leave his position at the palace with no need to further interact with Haman.

The years that followed were spent raising his darling, beautiful niece Esther. Thanks to his respected reputation, Mordecai was eventually able to erase his identity from the governmental data base, as well as removing his identity chip—required for all government transactions. Refusing to allow Esther to be chipped as well, he had create a self-sustaining homestead, far out of the reach of the government.

When news of Esther’s mandatory participation in Xerxes’ beauty pageant reaches Mordecai’s doorstep, he realizes they’re not nearly as insulated as he thought. Now he must get Esther somewhere safe, and quickly. With the help of a friend, he hopes to place Esther with seven guardians in wilds of the Hinterlands.

Easier said than done, however. These fearsome protectors are none other than The Seven Dragons of the Vale.

King Xerxes the Valiant is a fake. Everyone close to him knows his title is nothing more than ruse. His soldiers do his dirty work, his advisors make the big decisions, and even his former queen—Vashti—often wielded more influence in matters of state. But he’s sick of the charade.

Sick of himself.

Maybe it’s time to live up to his title. Stop relying on his second in command, Haman, for the running of the day-to-day goings on. Stop deferring to his advisors when faced with diplomatic decisions. Stop drinking so much wine which tends to sully his ability to perform any of the above.

Getting rid of the manipulative Vashti was a good first step. It doesn’t hurt that those outside the palace walls believe him to be valiant. Perhaps his new marriage will provide a fresh start as he lives up to the image he has carefully cultivated to his subjects.

He’ll need help, of course, to turn things inside the palace to his favor. Good thing he has Haman to help him.

There are seven dragons that guard the vale from the greedy humans and wizards that wish to encroach on their magical Hinterlands. These winged reptiles take to the air, patrolling the borders, searching the roads, and readily destroying those that dare to cross into their territory.
United in purpose, there is one magnificent dragon that rules over the other six.

Nautilus—Warrior of the Hinterlands, descendant of Rispian the Resplendent, Grand-dragon of Aakadian of Eneglaam, Protector of the Vale—is a chilling creature to behold. From his pearly white scales to his crimson eyes, this dragon with its serpentine neck and unicorn horn, may only be approached with special permission.

Thankfully, Mordecai has connections that have connections. Without the help of Mordecai’s elderly friend Caleb, there would be no hope for Esther to enter into the protection of this magnificent beast and his six companions.

Haman, second in command in the realm of Susa, may serve King Xerxes with a bit too much zeal. Zeal that has extended to the king’s queen, Vashti. Well…former queen, that is. And Haman may have had a little something to do with the loss of her title, truth be told.

No matter. With Vashti conveniently out of Xerxes’ favor, it’s much easier for Haman to pay her visits ad well as plot the king’s demise. If he can persuade Vashti to forgive him for getting her into this less-than-ideal situation, the two will become a power to be reckoned with—one that cunningly dethrones the impotent King Xerxes. Once Haman and Vashti unite with one another, they can move on to uniting their country with the Wizards Cabal and making Susa one of the most powerful countries in New Persia.

Maybe then they will finally rid the Hinterlands of those pesky dragons that protect the vale, keeping Susa’s borders from expanding as they should.

Queen Vashti the Fair and King Xerxes the Valiant make an ideal couple…if one was to judge them strictly by appearance. But, alas, a marriage cannot survive on pouty lips and chiseled jaws alone.

Besides, Vashti has recently lost her royal standing. No longer queen, the platinum blonde now seethes in her downsized quarters, plotting how best to return to Xerxes’ favor. Promise him an heir? Disrupt his upcoming search for a new queen? Resort to using her secret skills as an enchantress to make him love her again?

One thing is certain, this power-lusting woman will not step demurely out of the way and allow someone else to take her place. She may be the Fairest but she most certainly doesn’t play fair!

Caleb is a man who looks as worn and weathered as the ancient buildings of Parthia—the town where his modest shop, Caleb’s Cornucopia, displays rare treasures from the world over. Affectionately called Abba by the locals, Caleb knows everyone and everyone knows, and loves, him.

He has always held a special fondness for Mordecai and his niece. The three share a distinct connection that he’s kept to himself for many years. With recent tumultuous events in greater Susa trickling into Parthia, he’s beginning to wonder if the time has come to reveal more details about Esther’s miraculous recovery and the words God once whispered to him about the orphaned girl.

THE RUMORS ARE TRUE . . .

THE CREATURES EXIST.

#1. What was the inspiration for this series?
The inspiration for The Tethered World Chronicles blossomed from a love of The Chronicles of Narnia and all of the wonder that accompanied reading it to my children when they were young. I wanted to write the kind of story that everyone could enjoy together, and one that would stay with you after you finished the series. I also have a Narnia spinoff up my sleeve and knew I needed to establish myself as a writer first, before anyone would take such an undertaking seriously!

#2. How long did it take to finish writing these books?

The first book, The Tethered World, took a year for the first draft. Then I spent the next four or five editing it while I (sort of) figured out the publishing world. After I signed a contract with my publisher, Mountain Brook Ink, I then had only 8 months to complete the next book, The Flaming Sword, and then another 8 months after that to complete the final book, The Genesis Tree. It was intense but I learned that I work well under pressure, and it really built my faith to see the Lord give me the story literally as I wrote it. I do not plot beyond three or four main events that I want to happen from beginning to end so it was a wonderful (and often stressful) experience to watch the story unfold at my fingertips!

#3. Do you have favorite character(s) in this series?
Oh yes, too many to name! They’re all my “kids”, you know? But the twins, Brady and Brock come to mind right away. My own son is autistic, like Brock, so I loved incorporating his autism as part of the plan and purpose of the story that unfolded. And Brady became the friend and protector to Brock that I wish my son had. They were a great team together in the story!

#4. What do you hope your readers will take away with them when they read these books?
Purpose! I pray that they will see that they are part of a beautiful story that the Lord is writing, and that even in the most devastating of circumstances they are a valuable part of that story. We serve a big God with mysterious plans we don’t always understand, but Who works all things for our good--even when things seem otherwise.

#5. What made you choose some of the specific locations in the books?

My story is set in both the Pacific Northwest (Portland/Vancouver area) and pockets in the earth. I grew up in the Northwest and love and miss it fiercely (I’m now in Texas)! You might say that my including it in my books was a bit of a love letter to the place that I grew up.

As far as the other area in my story, The Tethered World which exists in pockets of the earth...I wanted a reasonable explanation for the rumors worldwide of Bigfoot, dwarves, leprechauns, and the like.

I decided to make them former residents of the Garden of Eden that the Lord moved below ground before the flood of Noah. Through natural disasters like earthquakes, cracks in the ground have allowed them access to “topside” once again, which is why people the world over have folklore and legends about such things.

#6. How did you name your characters?
Most of my characters are named after people I know and love. It was a fun way to give them a nod for being an important part of my life. Sometimes I mixed their names up (i.e. Revonika instead of Veronica), other times I used them outright. I also keep a running list of interesting names I come across so I have many choices when needed.

#7. Tell us something funny, sad, embarrassing, whatever, that happened involving this series.
I think one of the funniest things has been people’s reactions to my writing fantasy. I’m talking people that KNOW me well, like my husband and close friends. Though they know I’m creative in my decorating or how I dress, they had no clue of the world building and otherworldly imaginations I’m capable of. I’m not one to geek out over books, beyond Narnia, and I don’t decorate with unicorns or dragons or anything like that. The reaction has been, “Apparently I know nothing about you!” or “Where did all of this come from? I never suspected a thing! I suppose it’s an introverted talent of mine, LOL.

Fantasy has never been my first genre of choice but I've found some authors that I truly love, Heather L.L. FitzGerald is one of them. The Tethered World Chronicles had me hooked from the very first. And believe me, The Genesis Tree is probably the best one of the trilogy. Like all good epic fantasy this story has it all, danger, romance, betrayal, sacrifice, and is truly a bittersweet tale. With The Genesis Tree author Heather L.L. FitzGerald caused me to do something so extremely rare for me that I was taken by surprise, yes, I actually teared up near the end. The Genesis Tree will break your heart and lift up your soul as fantasy and the Bible meet and mingle in a way that sacrifices neither the adventure of the one nor the Truth of the other. Both entertaining and moving, this book, and the rest of this series, is a wonderful story for the entire family and is definitely not to be missed! I'm just sorry to be saying goodbye to the Larcen clan....maybe the author will someday consider prequels???

I fell in love with the Tethered World when I listened to an audio version of the first book, the narrator was great but the story itself was even better. Imagine how excited I was when I got to the end and found out it wasn't just a one-off book but would be a series... Enter book two, The Flaming Sword. What a story! More danger and excitement are in store for the Larcen clan and for the inhabitants of the Tethered World!

This book features the shared perspectives of Sadie and her brother which gives a rounded, and close-up, view of all the action. It was fun watching the Larcen siblings coming into their own, Sadie especially, starts growing and stretching beyond herself into the heroine the Tethered World so desperately needs.

Heather L.L. FitzGerald is a master at creating stories for the entire family to enjoy. Of merging Biblical concepts with fantasy in such a fun way that is an absolute delight to read. You just won't want to come to that last page and the story to end...

When Sadie uncovers the reasons behind her parents’ disappearance and the truth about her heritage, she despairs of ever feeling normal again. Especially when she learns that her mother’s interest in Bigfoot, Dwarves, and other lore extends beyond her popular blog. Sadie’s family has been entrusted with keeping the secrets of the Tethered World—home to creatures that once roamed the Garden of Eden. Sadie and her siblings must venture into this land to rescue their parents. Stepping out of reality and into a world she never knew existed is a journey Sadie fears and resents. But she chooses to risk all to save her family. She’s just not sure she will survive during the process.

My Review

Fantasy just became reality for Sadie...

So, I've never been the hugest fan of fantasy but over the years I've started giving some of the Christian ones a chance. The Tethered World features, what in my reading experience is, a unique premise. Legends like gnomes, leprechauns, and bigfoot, are real, originally coming from the Garden of Eden.

I have to say that I liked everything about The Tethered World; the neat storyline, Heather FitzGerald's gentle handling of a character's autism, the realistic interaction between the siblings, down to the detailed realm of the Tethered World and its inhabitants. Not to mention, that the Larcen kids are homeschooled which is a rarity in today's fiction.

I have to say that I truly loved Sadie as a heroine, a reluctant heroine I might add. I've read so many stories where the girl is impossibly brave and just accepts whatever comes her way. Not so, Sadie. She is honestly scared, would rather be anywhere but smack in an adventure, and doesn't always get along with her siblings. But in her determination to rescue her parents she finds out that she is made of stronger stuff than even she thought.

I listened to the Audible version of this book and I totally enjoyed it. The narrator was perfect, she had the right voice for Sadie's character and just the right inflections. I also liked the few effects that were scattered throughout the story.

Heather FitzGerald's first book in her Tethered World Chronicles series is a must read or listen for any fantasy lover and would make a perfect storytime book for families. I can't wait for book two to come out!
