Rock and roll may never die, but the King is definitely dead . . . again. To pay off some bills, crime scene cleaner Gabby St. Claire takes a job doing mold remediation, but she finds a surprise in the dilapidated home's crawlspace: Elvis, dead as a doornail and still wearing his blue suede shoes. How could she possibly keep her nose out of a case like this? A sequel to the popular novel Hazardous Duty. ASIN: B001QOGJWM OK, this is it. Suspicious Minds has remained my favorite Squeaky Clean Mystery ever! Well, maybe I've only read a few of them, but still. This book has ELVIS! Yes, I am a millennial, and yes Elvis died, or least he moved to Kokomo, IN, over a decade before I was born. But, still. This book has The King! What more could you ask for? The mystery itself was well done with suspects galore and plenty of plot twists to keep you off guard. But the best part, and what I loved most about the book, was every single song reference that Christy Barritt so cleverly wove into this fun and crazy mystery starring Gabby, whose crime scene cleaning exploits continually get her into trouble. Glitch And Famous has all of those well-loved elements and there just may be a few more tricks up author Christy Barritt's sleeve. | This Book received a 5 Bark rating. |
While I did have one major plot element figured out, who was behind the attacks on Joey's friend, I was still in for some surprises, though they weren't as unpleasant for me reading them as they were for Joey and Jackson experiencing them. I love Christy Barritt's mix of cozy mystery and romantic suspense in The Worst Detective Ever Mystery Series, it's what makes Glitch And Famous, and the others, so much fun and a delight to read. Read them in order, but, you seriously won't want to miss a single Joey Darling mystery...you'll love the surprise at the end of this one...

Mystery
It all started with a runaway dog. Meet Serena Lavinia: part-time ice cream truck driver, part-time reporter, and full-time woman of mystery. She never expected to find a cute little terrier while on her morning ice cream route on the island of Lantern Beach. Nor did she expect the dog to be carrying a bloody shoe. When a dead body is discovered floating in a nearby pool, Serena becomes fully immersed in her very own who-done-it. But her investigation hits a snag when a new foe arrives in town. Webster Newsome has been appointed the town’s new newspaper editor—a job Serena wanted—and the man is entirely too bossy. ASIN: B087CC6JF6 | When ice cream lady Serena Lavinia’s best customer doesn’t show up to buy his daily treats, she has no choice but to find out if he’s okay. She didn’t expect to find him lying dead amid the wrappers of her wares. As an investigation begins and all the evidence points to Serena, she has no choice but to clear her name. With the help of her trusty dog Scoops and her new frenemy Webster Newsome, she’s determined to find the bad guy before her life gets the ultimate shake up and she spends the rest of her days behind bars . . . and not of the frozen indulgence variety. ASIN: B088Q2S5WY | Something deadly is bursting in air . . . An explosion rattles Serena Lavinia from her morning ice cream route. When she catches a friend abruptly leaving Lantern Beach, her suspicions rise. Could there be any connection between his departure and the pipe bomb? As Serena races to find answers, she’s caught in a quandary far bigger than chocolate or vanilla. She must decide which is more important—exposing the truth or maintaining her loyalty. With the island’s Fourth of July celebration looming, Serena and her trusty dog Scoops must find answers before more danger lights up the night. ASIN: B089Y1YLT9 | Strawberry sauce. That’s what Serena Lavinia tells herself when something red is found splattered on the front of her ice cream truck. As much as Serena wants to believe the liquid is from one of the banana splits served at a local children’s festival, she can’t. When the Lantern Beach police confirm that the substance is blood, Serena’s good vibes melt like ice cream on a hot day. To make matters worse, both her ice cream truck and her dog seem determined to drag Serena into the heart of the murder mystery. With tourist season in full swing, there’s no shortage of personalities who might be guilty. Can Serena find answers? Or will the guilty party split before justice is served? ASIN: B08DN7QLL9 |
Deadman's Float: What an adorable introduction to this fun ice cream themed cozy mystery series from one of my favorite authors! Deadman's Float is a novella so I read it pretty quickly. I enjoyed the fact that the crime in the book was not the same ol', same ol', and I had fun trying to figure out who was behind it all while getting acquainted with Serena and Co. Milkshake Up: Oh boy! In this fun novella Serena is is the main suspect! Can she, and readers, find the the killer before it's too late? But that's the fun of reading this book! Oh, that, and Serena's crazy costumes every day. I am also really loving the ice cream theme, this one is Milkshake Up, in these stories. Of course, that might be because I'm reading them when it's in the 90s outside... Bomb Pop Threat: Serena only has one day to solve the case or this Bomb Pop Threat will go kaboom and a friend will go to jail for a crime they didn't commit. But who-done-it? I think this was the one that kept me guessing the most and and that my guesses were the the farthest off. Sure, I considered the person for about 5 seconds but let the author skillfully sidetrack me... | These Books received a 4 Bark rating. |
Overall: Crime a La Mode is an adorable cozy mystery series from Christy Barrritt. The novellas are all short and very quick reads, easy to finish if you only have a spare hour or two. I read the series, at least the 4 books currently out, back to back and it was so much fun. I will admit it here and now, my favorite characters weren't 'people' but they sure were real characters. The two being Scoops the dog and Elsa the ice cream truck. Those two had me laughing all the way through. If you are a fan of Christy Barritt or cozy mysteries Crime a La Mode is a cute series you shouldn't miss!
Tell Tale Book Reviews gives Crime a La Mode by Christy Barritt a 4 Bark rating.

Gaffe Out Loud
The Worst Detective Ever Mystery Series book 7
by Christy Barritt
-From Goodreads- Actress Joey Darling is beginning a new season . . . of her TV show and her life. Joey Darling’s life is finally on track. Her hit series has been picked up by a new network, her relationship with Detective Jackson Sullivan couldn’t be better, and she’s even bought a house. But right after taking possession, Joey discovers a dead body upstairs. Joey knows she won’t have any peace until she figures out why a dead woman was left at her house and who killed her. And she desperately needs peace as the “normal” life she’s trying to establish quickly progresses from great to the brink of collapse. The countdown is ticking as Joey must soon leave to begin filming. But one gaffe after another slows her investigation and makes her question her choices. The closer Joey gets to answers, the more someone is determined to make sure this season of her life is canceled—permanently. ASIN: B0825DLRLW Joey is back! | This Book received a 5 Bark rating. |
I'm probably using the word 'favorite' too much but Joey really is my favorite Christy Barritt created amateur detective. She is fun, funny, and is such a relatable mess. By turns Joey makes me laugh, shake my head, and nod in understanding.
I enjoyed Gaffe Out Loud immensely. The mystery was good, kept me guessing even though I came close a time or two, and I loved the romance between Joey and Jackson finally getting its chance to bloom. This story is a real winner and I personally can't wait for the next crazy adventure that Joey finds herself in...
I've actually read this book once before but I really enjoy audiobooks and I love Joey Darling so I was tickled to listen to her. Once again, the narrator has done an amazing job bringing Joey and the others to life in vivid color. The sound and production were A+ as well making this audiobook a perfectly delightful listen.
Tell Tale Book Reviews gives Gaffe Out Loud by Christy Barritt a 5 Bark rating.

Flaw Abiding Citizen
The Worst Detective Ever Mystery Series book 6
by Christy Barritt
-From Amazon- Where’s the director when you need him to call “cut”? Just when Joey thinks she’s closer to answers about her father’s mysterious disappearance, more questions surface. The starlet is determined to find her dad and to put an end to the crazy stalker fan club trying to manipulate her decisions. But life has plot twists she can’t see coming. Secrets abound—secrets from the most unlikely of people—and Joey’s had enough. She’s tired of flawed theories and abiding by other people’s rules. Doing what any good citizen would, she seeks resolution, knowing the stakes are higher than just herself. Dangerous encounters meet the wannabe detective at every turn. As the end of one mystery draws close, it’s clear that Joey will either end up with the answers she seeks or find herself in the closing credits . . . for one final time. ASIN: B081TLC2S1 Answers...or just more questions...? In Flaw Abiding Citizen Joey, and readers, finally get many of the answers they've waited so long to find out. But, sometimes those answers bring up even more questions... | This Book received a 4.5 Bark rating. |
In some ways Flaw Abiding Citizen felt much like a satisfying conclusion to the series, but, as we know, author Christy Barritt still has more murder and mayhem in store for Joey and for readers. The story also had a slightly different tone to it, less cozy mystery and more romantic suspense, which I enjoyed.
I've read this book in print and now listening to it as an audiobook brought the story to life in a totally different way. I loved it! The production was top notch and the returning narrator, who sounds exactly Joey, was a perfect match! If you love The Worst Detective Ever Mystery Series don't miss this audiobook!
Tell Tale Book Reviews gives Flaw Abiding Citizen by Christy Barritt a 4.5 Bark rating.

Blooper Freak
The Worst Detective Ever Mystery Series book 5
by Christy Barritt
-From Goodreads- Real life is nothing like TV. Joey Darling, actress and detective by default, is reminded of this point daily. If only problems could be solved in sixty minutes, complete with commercial breaks, closing credits, and a catchy theme song. Joey accompanies Detective Jackson Sullivan to a crime scene, only to discover she knows the victim. After a friend is accused of murder, Joey can’t refuse her help—however bumbling it might be. Unfortunately, she only seems to dig up more questions instead of desperately needed answers. When a misguided fan offers clues, Joey discovers something much deeper than a single crime. But can she sort through all the various story lines to get to the truth? Or will one blooper after another put not only the investigation in jeopardy but her life as well? ASIN: B07ZJVSCFP As answers come, Joey only has more questions... Joey Darling really is The Worst Detective Ever, but, that is precisely why I love this series, and her, as much as I do. Her life is messy, she gets herself into the absolutely craziest situations, she's funny and frequently clueless, and she drives Jackson crazy with her stunts. But, oh, that's what makes this series from Christy Barritt so much fun to read! | This Book received a 4.5 Bark rating. |
Can I just say how much I love the narrator for the audiobook version of Blooper Freak? Her voice is perfect for Joey Darling and truly brings Christy Barritt's wonderful Worst Detective Ever Mysteries to life. The sound and production quality is excellent, couldn't be better, and provided the perfect listening experience. Loved this audiobook and the series...can't wait for more!
Tell Tale Book Reviews gives Blooper Freak by Christy Barritt a 4.5 Bark rating.

Join The Flub
The Worst Detective Ever Mystery Series book 4
by Christy Barritt
-From Goodreads- There’s no business like show business . . . especially when a killer is involved. Joey Darling’s local movie premiere was supposed to be a win-win for everyone involved. All the proceeds would go to the children’s wing at a local hospital, and the online buzz would create positive press for the area’s tourism. But things go awry when the event is sabotaged and Joey’s stunt double is seriously injured. Suspects seem sparser than quality G-rated movies, and police fear the intended target was actually Joey. Detective Jackson Sullivan and neighbor Zane Oakley—two men competing for Joey’s affection—insist on trading off guard duty until the bad guy is behind bars. To make matters even worse, Joey’s ex shows up right before the release of his tell-all book about his life with the Hollywood sweetheart. Someone seems determined to create real-life drama. But Joey isn’t one to be deterred. Though a movie-worthy villain wants to pull the plug on this production—and maybe even on a few people’s lives—Joey is determined that the show must go on. ASIN: B07XVRW7BD Find out what murder & blue eye shadow have in common! | This Book received a 4.5 Bark rating. |
I read the print version of this book a couple of years ago but that didn't dim my enjoyment of the audiobook one iota. The production was well done and the choice of narrator was spot on for Joey and friends.
Whether reading or listening, Join The Flub, from the talented pen of Christy Barritt, is a great way to pass an afternoon. It has the perfect blend of mystery and humor, with a touch of romance. Don't miss out!
Tell Tale Book Reviews gives Join The Flub by Christy Barritt a 4.5 Bark rating.

Joke And Dagger
The Worst Detective Ever Mystery Series book 8
by Christy Barritt
-From Goodreads- Someone has flipped the script, and chaos abounds. Joey Darling thought she’d take a quick acting gig between filming her hit TV show, Relentless, and prepping for an upcoming movie. The peaceful island of Lantern Beach seemed like a perfect getaway, especially when her fiancé joins her on location. But from day one on the set, things go awry. Someone alters the script, adding a mysterious death to the movie. At first, the changes seem like a joke. But when real life imitates the script, Joey realizes there’s more to the story. Joey has no choice but to search for answers—with the help of her fiancé, Detective Jackson Sullivan, of course. Each day, more danger comes Joey’s way, and it’s clear the killer is becoming more unraveled. Joey fears there’s a traitor on the set . . . but can she figure out the killer before the final cut? ISBN-13: 9781706771654 Filming on location has never been so dangerous... Ahh, Joey... Have I mentioned how much I love her stories? Joke And Dagger is the eighth book in The Worst Detective Ever Mystery Series and I am still begging for more. Christy Barritt really has penned the perfect character in Joey. She's not a professional, detective that is, she's quirky, she's insecure, she's made mistakes, but she tries her best and that's where the fun comes in. | This Book received a 4.5 Bark rating. |
Joke And Dagger was a fun read and one that I enjoyed very much! Christy Barritt has a real knack for mixing danger, romance, and humor in such a delightful way! If cozy myteries with a faith element are your thing you've really got to try The Worst Detective Ever Mystery Series, it's great!

Reading and history have been my passion since early childhood when my parents encouraged both. I was introduced to Christian fiction around age 4-5 while listening to radio drama adaptations of books by great authors including Janette Oke. I have been a voracious reader and avid library patron ever since. I started Tell Tale Book Reviews in December 2012. I am also an active volunteer in the areas I hold most dear, library, museum, and pets. Hobbies include a small bead jewelry business, watching classic movies/ TV, listening to Irish/Celtic music, and autograph collecting.
