Genre: Historical / Gothic Romance Lady Jayne Disappears |
-From Amazon- When Aurelie Harcourt's father dies in debtor's prison, he leaves her just two things: his wealthy family, whom she has never met, and his famous pen name, Nathaniel Droll. Her new family greets her with apathy and even resentment. Only the quiet houseguest, Silas Rotherham, welcomes her company. When Aurelie decides to complete her father's unfinished serial novel, writing the family into the story as unflattering characters, she must keep her identity as Nathaniel Droll hidden while searching for the truth about her mother's disappearance--and perhaps even her father's death. Author Joanna Davidson Politano's stunning debut set in Victorian England will delight readers with its highly original plot, lush setting, vibrant characters, and reluctant romance. ISBN-13: 978-0800728755 Will she find the answers she seeks...or die trying? Rarely does a cover and/or title become the deciding factor on whether I want to read a book. But Lady Jayne Disappears was one of the exceptions. I didn't even read the back cover blurb before deciding that I wanted to read this book. The use of grayscale and a dramatic 'vanishing' font made for a very mysterious and effective image. | This Book received a 4.5 Bark rating. |
Lady Jayne Disappears is a wonderful read that is not to be missed! And I will be watching this new author with great interest.
Tell Tale Book Reviews gives Lady Jayne Disappears by Joanna Davidson Politano a 4.5 Bark rating.

The Austen Escape
by Katherine Reay
-From Amazon- Falling into the past will change their futures forever. Mary Davies finds safety in her ordered and productive life. Working as an engineer, she genuinely enjoys her job and her colleagues—particularly a certain adorable and intelligent consultant. But something is missing. When Mary’s estranged childhood friend, Isabel Dwyer offers her a two-week stay in a gorgeous manor house in England, she reluctantly agrees in hopes that the holiday will shake up her quiet life in just the right ways. But Mary gets more than she bargained for when Isabel loses her memory and fully believes she lives in Jane Austen’s Bath. While Isabel rests and delights in the leisure of a Regency lady, attended by other costume-clad guests, Mary uncovers startling truths about their shared past, who Isabel was, who she seems to be, and the man who now stands between them. Outings are undertaken, misunderstandings arise, and dancing ensues as this company of clever, well-informed people, who have a great deal of conversation, work out their lives and hearts. ISBN-13: 978-0718078096 Is it just an escape or will they find all that they seek? | This Book received a 4.5 Bark rating. |
The Austen Escape is a book that will tug at the heart, convict the reader a little, and is also simply a fun, yes, I'm going to say 'escape' into the world of modern day Bath, England, and the fascination with Jane Austen and the Regency Era. That being said, Jane-Austen-philes will love all the references to her novels and their wonderful characters but readers, like me, who have read some but not all of the books and watched some but not all of the movies will not feel bogged down by just another remake. The Austen Escape is its own story and only borrows the best parts from the 200-year-old novels. Fans of Katherine Reay will not be disappointed in this new book from such a talented author.
Tell Tale Book Reviews gives The Austen Mistake by Katherine Reay a 4.5 Bark rating.

Hmm, where do I begin? Well, it's a Dana Mentink novel which in my book means it's a MUST read! And yes, Cowboy Christmas Guardian was everything I'd hoped for and more! Not only was there lots of romance and suspense plus some real twists and turns, but, one of the main settings was an old gold mine! His father's partner blames their guide for the death of his father, but Allan wants to find the truth for himself. He finds an unlikely ally in Cassidy, and as the two begin to look into the mystery, they suddenly find that things are much less clear, and much more dangerous, than either could ever imagine. ISBN-13: 978-0764219238 Will love...or death...find them in Denali? | This Book received a 3.5 Bark rating. |
I had a hard time connecting with the main characters at times, finding them both to be quite naive. But I did appreciate Allan's journey to forgiveness, a struggle, which for a myriad of reasons, many of us are familiar with. For me at least, the real stars of the book were the Curry Hotel and Denali 'The Great One'. Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse brought them both life with such vivid descriptions it was almost like being there.
In The Shadow Of Denali is a sweet romance with some dashes of danger from a nasty villain and especially the capricious Alaskan weather. Fans of both authors will enjoy this trip to Alaska of the 1920s.
Tell Tale Book Reviews gives In The Shadow Of Denali by Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse

A Time To Rise
Out Of Time book 3
by Nadine Brandes
-From Amazon- What more can you sacrifice than your life? Parvin Blackwater is dead. At least that's what the Council and the world thinks. But her sacrifice tore down part of the Wall long enough to stir up hope and rebellion in the people. Now she will rise again. Strong, free, and fearless. Parvin and Solomon must uncover the mysterious clues that Jude left behind in order to destroy the projected Wall once and for all. Meanwhile, the Council schemes to new levels of technology in its attempts to keep the people contained. Can a one-handed Radical and a scarred ex-Enforcer really bring shalom to the world? ISBN-13: 978-1683700463 It was her Time to Die, then to Speak, and now to Rise... | This Book received a 4.5 Bark rating. |
As I've read this series something different has stood out to me in each book. This time it was trust, total trust in God, even when it makes absolutely no sense. Parvin has had to this in each book but in A Time To Rise she must do it over and over. There is a lot about forgiveness in this story but that ultimate trust in God is was what really spoke to me personally.
Nadine Brandes has really run her characters through the wringer in this series, and A Time To Rise was no exception. It was a good conclusion to a powerful series. All of the threads and loose ends are finally woven together in a surprising way. Emotionally moving, nail-bitingly suspenseful, this is a book not to be missed. May we all find the Shalom that Parvin strives to find for herself and her people...
Tell Tale Book Reviews gives A Time To Rise by Nadine Brandes a 4.5 Bark rating.

Leanna has received an offer to teach elsewhere and feels she has no choice but to leave Castle Gate. . .though she will be leaving her heart behind.
Genre: Historical Romance
Release Date: November 1, 2017 |
What a sweet historical romance! It's really hard to believe that this is one of Angie Dicken's first novels! My Heart Belongs In Castle Gate, Utah: Leanna's Choice is a wonderful addition to this fun series! Entertaining but taking on some difficult issues including prejudice and crippling regret.
Prejudice is the enemy for Leanna and Alex, both of them even deal with it a little bit in their own hearts. I very much appreciated how the author, intentionally or not, portrayed that prejudice comes in many forms and from all directions. Readers will find themselves delighted as love and hope begin to win out over the darkness.
My Heart Belongs In Castle Gate, Utah: Leanna's Choice is a lovely story, slim in size and in many ways a quick read, but definitely an enjoyable one. This book, and the entire series, is a must read for historical romance fans. And I think Angie Dicken will be a new author to watch...

Be strong and let your heart take courage;
Yes, wait for the LORD.” Psalm 27:14
The story I wrote stemmed from my heritage. From a very young age, I’ve been inspired by my grandfather. He was the son of a Greek coal miner who came over from Greece in the 1910’s. My grandfather always had wonderful stories to tell–he stirred up my intrigue for WWII era as he was a Purple Heart recipient (twice), and spoke of freeing concentration camps and invading Hitler’s homes; my grandfather lived a rags to riches legacy, having been born in a tent in a coal town, and then becoming a successful home and commercial builder–I declared I’d be an architect at age eleven…even majoring in Landscape Architecture in college.
Papou was one of my greatest heroes. And my novel was a tribute to him, to my Greek roots, to an American legacy. |
My great grandfather, born in 1884
and immigrated to Utah in 1910’s. |
And…
Now it’s 2017, and that story is under contract with a publisher as of Fall 2016.
What timing, right?
Why the heck did it take so long? Not for lack of trying. My agent and I took every possible measure.
Why did I get rejection after rejection, and write two other books in the wait?
What happened between then?
Only in looking back, do I see why I had to wait for this book. And when I look back, I realize just how much Timing is His and there’s nothing I can do to speed it up or make it mine. All I can do is take courage, and wait.
I’ll give you a quick recap of what happened between 2013–when the book was put in the proverbial drawer of unwanted manuscripts–and now, 2017, the year it will get published (um, after a few rewrites and edits–always learning…).
In looking back, this is what I see:
My Community was Built. I fell in love with my writer friendships. A bit dramatic? Maybe, but it’s the truth. I connected with ladies who knew my heart as a writer, and allowed me into their lives in an authentic, Christ-loving way. I found hope in the writing journey because my friends held my hands and rubbed my back when all seemed lost. And in this, I grew not as a writer, but as a heart. My heart became soft for the needs of others and the value of authenticity in this short, precious life.
|
There was a Pride Monster, and He needed to kill it. Oh, Lord, if ever there was a pride monster, it was me. My gut reaction in every rejection, every criticism, every other person’s success was a measurement against them according to me. Yuck. Do you know what the best way to kill a Pride Monster? Starve it. Even though I had my sweet friends and my agent encouraging me along the way, my heart was set on publication and I was not getting that. I wanted it so badly that I turned ugly when it seemed to slip through my fingers with every rejection.
|
The Darkest Valley Was Ahead. Everything stood still in 2014. My personal crisis gave me little room for any true focus on my writing success. If anything, it made the effort seem petty. When you go through your days wondering if you’ll make it to the next morning without a complete mental breakdown, you can’t really dream. My dream in those moments was to crawl out of my skin and run away. This was not about my writing, this was about God’s faithfulness to someone who was losing faith–in the person she loved, in the life she constructed, in the heart that was broken. Looking back (I did climb up and out of this valley), I needed this valley walk (or crawl) to happen when it did–without a book on the shelf, without confidence in something that I had accomplished. I needed brokenness to become stronger and know that my strength has nothing to do with me.
|
First, I got a book contract! You know this, but, the contract came at a time when I had grown peaceful in the journey–the pride monster lay slain, and I picked up a pen and took an opportunity. My Oklahoma Land Run book with Love Inspired Historical won the Manuscript Matchmakers contest…and WAS coming out in Spring 2018. |
So, what happens after I turn in my complete book a few days before its deadline? My editor tells me they bumped up my date to September of 2017. And I am sure, for them, it had nothing to do with the history, but for me, it was everything to do with the history–and His timing. Look for my debut novel, The Outlaw’s Second Chance this September!
There’s more…
My second contract came in! And this was a wonderful surprise. My agent and I had found out last spring that a new series was being launched based on geographical places around the U.S. I immediately thought of my Coal country story. So, I put together a proposal for a book I’d written long ago…and got a contract with Barbour this Fall for my novel, My Heart Belongs in Castle Gate, Utah.
But, the timing? November 2017 is my release.
God’s Timing in its finest…The book comes out during the centennial year of my grandfather’s birth. He was born in Dec. 1917 in Carbon County, Utah. My hero and my inspiration for this very book.
I just can’t stop smiling at the chance to honor my late grandfather with a story written by his third generation Greek American granddaughter who was inspired by his roots grown a century ago.
If only he could be here now. But I know he’s smiling, too.
A century.
It took a CENTURY.
Only by God’s grace, and His perfect timing.
Angie Dicken is a third generation Greek American, the granddaughter of strong men and women who endured hardship to grow American roots. My Heart Belongs In Castle Gate, Utah is set near the birthplace of her grandfather, a Greek coal miner’s son, and published 100 years after his birth. Angie is a contributor to The Writer’s Alley blog and an ACFW member since 2010. She lives with her husband and four children in the Midwest where she enjoys exploring eclectic new restaurants and chatting with friends over coffee.

A Time To Speak
Out Of Time book 2
by Nadine Brandes
-From Amazon- What happens when you live longer than you wanted to? Parvin Blackwater wanted to die, but now she’s being called to be a leader. The only problem is, no one wants to follow. The Council uses Jude’s Clock-matching invention to force “new-and-improved” Clocks on the public. Those who can’t afford one are packed into boxcars like cattle and used for the Council’s purposes. Parvin and Hawke find themselves on a cargo ship of Radicals headed out to sea. What will the Council do to them? And why are people suddenly dying before their Clocks have zeroed-out? ASIN: B013Z40BIS It was her Time To Die, now it's her Time To Speak... | This Book received a 4.5 Bark rating. |
And this time around I found myself thinking even more about what it would be like to know your exact time of death and wondering how it would affect me if I knew. Would I, coward that I am, realize that I had nothing to lose and that nothing I could do would add another second to my time? You see, I already know the one thing that Parvin, and all of the others in the USE, struggle with, every moment of my life is in God's hands. I do not draw a single breath without Him. Pretty deep for a YA book you say? Maybe. But I have to say that I like to find a YA book, or any book, that both entertains and makes you think.
A Time To Speak is an utterly engrossing story. I couldn't seem to put it down, I just HAD to know what would come next. This book is a bit gritty but it is also oh so wonderful. Nadine Brandes has written a story that will stay with the reader, YA and Adult alike, long after that last page is turned. Now, on to book three...

Reading and history have been my passion since early childhood when my parents encouraged both. I was introduced to Christian fiction around age 4-5 while listening to radio drama adaptations of books by great authors including Janette Oke. I have been a voracious reader and avid library patron ever since. I started Tell Tale Book Reviews in December 2012. I am also an active volunteer in the areas I hold most dear, library, museum, and pets. Hobbies include a small bead jewelry business, watching classic movies/ TV, listening to Irish/Celtic music, and autograph collecting.
