#1. Charlie Brown’s Linus may have his thumb and blanket, but I’ve got my ugly sweater – a ratty, avocado-green knitted vest I wear whenever I write. During the creation of High As The Heavens, it kept me warm on those cold nights of research and revising the manuscript, and the vest has really deep pockets, perfect for holding my colored highlighters, pencils, eraser, and of course, lots of Belgian chocolates!

#2. The name for my High As The Heavens heroine, Evelyn Marche, was inspired by my own French relations! My great-grandmother, Evalyn, lived in the northern Midwest during the WWI era and bore thirteen children, before she died while birthing her last, my grandmother, Evelyn, in July of 1918. It’s so hard to imagine life for a woman in those times and especially with having so many children, but she and my grandmother are heroines in my view.

#3. My husband, John, enjoys working on models, and so when High As The Heavens launched last June he built me two WWI model biplanes, similar to the aircraft that my story hero, Simon Forrester, might have flown. How cool is that?

While writing High As The Heavens, I visited a vintage aircraft museum in Tillamook, Oregon, and got to see the cockpit of a Nieuport 11 biplane, a popular aircraft flown by American and French pilots during the First World War. The seat area was so small! It’s no wonder WWI military pilots weren’t allowed parachutes, they didn’t have room. (Photo of this plane on my website www.katebreslin.com)
