Pirates, storms, shipwreck and betrayal threaten to delay the couple in their journey even as sparks fly between them. With her brother-in-law in fast pursuit, the last thing Charity wants is help from a man, especially a religious one, but she has no choice. After Elias' heart was broken by a sordid woman who nearly ruined his life, he seeks a godly woman pure as the virgin sands of the Caribbean. He believes he has found such a woman in Charity. Until he discovers she is a murderer and is now faced with two choices: letting her go or turning her in to the authorities.

3 Things You Didn't Know About Charity's Cross

It amazes me that even after writing nearly 20 books, every story I embark upon has its own set of strange circumstances surrounding its creation. For example, I wrote my first book, The Redemption on my lunch break at work. I wrote The Ransom listening to Led Zeppelin and the audio book of Scarlet Pimpernel. One of my books, I forget which one, I wrote while nervously munching on popcorn and chocolate. The truth is, every story is unique and requires a unique atmosphere. Not only that, every story takes its emotional toll on me and causes me to react in certain ways or require certain things around me to help me through the process.
Charity’s Cross is a unique story for me because it is centered around a woman who endured torturous abuse in her marriage. In order to get into character I had to put myself deep within Charity’s soul as the abuse was happening. Some people may laugh at this and say “Hey, it’s only fiction, relax.” But for me, in order to do the story justice, I really do have to leap in with both feet, or rather my entire heart.

1. I wrote the story while taking care of my granddaughter Andrea. In fact, I started the story just before she turned 1 year old. You might think the effect of such a distraction would be a scatter-brained story, but instead, my love for her caused a bounty of emotions that I believe helped fuel the intense feelings in the main character, Charity. You see, without giving away too much of the story, she lost a child during her marriage, and spending days caring for a baby stirred up that motherly instinct within me, along with the agony of losing such a precious child.

2. Another thing that was unusual about this book was the hero, Elias Dutton. Usually, I model my heroes after several different characters/people/actors…etc I know. But Elias was different. I took him completely from one character in the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie, On Stranger Tides. For those who have seen it, he plays the preacher who falls in love with a mermaid. What I loved about his character in the movie was that Hollywood didn’t portray the man of God as a wimpy, slobbering, preaching moron like they usually do. This guy was strong, brave, resourceful and kind. And that fit Elias perfectly.

3. The last thing that was different about writing Charity’s Cross was that I never wanted to write it. I wrote the original series Charles Towne Belles back in 2008-2009 about the three Westcott sisters who had moved from England to the Colonies. A fourth sister was mentioned who remained back in England, but I never intended to write her story. Charity had the misfortune of marrying a monster and I wanted to leave it at that. Over the years, I received many emails from readers who desperately wanted to know Charity’s story. I ignored them all, proceeding to write several more books instead. But one day out of the blue, God gave me the first scene from Charity’s Cross. I wasn’t even thinking about it or planning to write it, but there it was played out in my mind as vivid as if it actually happened. I knew then that I would have to write the story or Charity would haunt me forever.
