South vs Brazil

The settlers in Abandoned Memories have come a long way from home. I have carefully chosen the recipes to  represent the settlers old home and the new. These are food that they MIGHT have made or eaten. Hopefully these recipes will inspire you to try a little something new and take you deeper into the world of the New Hope colony.

Southern

Candied Sweet Potatoes

Ingredients 

• 6 large sweet potatoes
  
• 1/2 cup butter
  
• 2 cups white sugar
  
• 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  

• 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  
• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  
• salt to taste
  

Directions

1.   Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into slices.

2.   Melt the butter in a heavy skillet and add the sliced sweet potatoes.

3.   Mix the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. 

4.  Cover the sweet potatoes with sugar mixture and stir. 

5.  Cover skillet, reduce heat to low and cook for about 1 hour or until potatoes are "candied". They should be tender but a little hard around the edges. Also the sauce will turn dark. You will need to stir occasionally during the cooking. 

6.  Stir in the vanilla just before serving. 

7.  Serve hot.

Brazilian

Arroz Brasileiro - Brazilian-style Rice

Ingredients 

• 1/4 cup vegetable oil
• 1 clove garlic
• 1 small onion
• 1 tomato
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 2 cups water
• 1 cup rice

Directions

1. Rinse the rice several times, until the water runs clear.
   
   
2. Chop the onion and the tomato into 1/4 inch cubes. Mash the garlic with a mortar and pestle.
   
   
3. Heat the vegetable oil in a saucepan on medium heat, and add the mashed garlic. Cook garlic for 1 minute.
   
   
4. Add the chopped onion and tomato and cook, stirring. Cook until softened, about 3 minutes.
   
   
5. Add the water and salt and bring to a boil.
   
   
6. Add the rice. Lower the heat, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes.
   
   
7. Turn off the heat and leave rice covered for 5 minutes more.
   
   
8. Fluff rice with fork and serve.
