Historical Romance
A Most Peculiar Circumstance
Ladies Of Distinction book 2
by Jen Turano
-From the back cover- * A Sophmore Novel Full of Love and Laughter A Most Peculiar Circumstance by Jen Turano After a critically acclaimed debut, Jen Turano returns to the upper class world of 1880 with the tale of another spirited heroine – Arabella Becket. This feisty suffragette, the sister of Hamilton Beckett (A Change of Fortune), may have finally met her match in the stubborn private investigator sent to fetch her home. Turano's whimsical style and witty repartee make A Most Peculiar Circumstance a delight to read! An avid supporter of the women's suffrage movement, Miss Arabella Beckett's driving passion in life is to aid downtrodden women. Her most recent act to that end, however, did not go according to plan. Quite by accident, Arabella's actions have landed both her and the young woman she was helping in a very unfortunate circumstance – jail. Mr. Theodore Wilder set out to find Arabella Beckett as a favor to her brother, But what should have been a simple task has evolved into a wild a goose chase across the country, all to rescue and infuriating young woman incapable of staying out of trouble. Back home in New York, Arabella and Theodore continue to cross paths. Although sparks do fly whenever they meet, they're not the kind one associates with romance. But when trouble follows Arabella to New York, this unlikely couple is forced to face the possibility that they may have landed in the most peculiar circumstance of all: love. * (Note: My copy is an ARC so the back cover will vary from the one officially published and that you will read) What a fun, funny, and totally enjoyable book! I hadn't read Jen Turano's first book in this series, A Change Of Fortune, yet so I didn't know what to expect. I was in for a real treat and you will be too when you read this book. The dialogue is witty and will keep you laughing. The two main characters have such delightful barbs for each other, at least until they finally figure out they just might be in love. | . . . Family is central to this book. Siblings, parents, and grandparents. The parents do make mistakes but they really do want what is best for their children.
I am so glad, as a modern woman, that I don't have to deal with all of the well-meaning matchmaking, I would go crazy if my parents were as set on it as the mothers are in this story.
The grandparents dispense love and wisdom and are not marginalized, the younger people actually listen. Wait until you read a little of the grandparent's story, I am hoping Jen Turano will write a book about them sometime in the future.
I would class A Most Peculiar Circumstance as a romantic comedy, but there is more to it. Arabella genuinely wants to help women and that often lands her in trouble, sometimes pretty serious trouble. The last 1/3 or so of the book has a nice suspense-type thread running through it. Where are the 'girls' on the street going? And who is after Arabella? The author did a good job on the who's-the-bad-guy part because I had no clue as to the who and why. Since I read an ARC I am not sure exactly what the final text will look like but I did have to say here that I really liked how the author handled the male protectiveness and the bit of violence near the end. Trying to not give much away, I liked how the men were allowed to be men, not cruel but realistic especially for the time period. There is nothing like the bad guys getting a good drubbing from the hero and the heroine's family! Quite satisfying after all of the dastardly things they had done. I won't say any more, you'll just have to read it for yourself.
This book is perfect if you are looking for romantic historical with lots of humor and a dash of danger.
