The Fairest Beauty
by Melanie Dickerson
-From the back cover- A DARING RESCUE. A DIFFICULT CHOICE. Sophie desperately wants to get away from her stepmother's jealousy and believes escape is her only chance to be happy. Then a young man named Gabe arrives from Hagenheim Castle, claiming she is betrothed to his older brother, and everything twists upside down. This could be Sophie's one chance at freedom – but can she trust another person to keep her safe? Gabe defied his parents, Rose and Wilhelm, by going to find Sophie, and now he believes they had a right to worry: the girl's inner and outer beauty has enchanted him. Though romance is impossible – she is his brother's future wife, and Gabe himself is betrothed to someone else – he promises himself he will see the mission through, no matter what. When the pair flee to the Cottage of the Seven, they find help – but also find their feelings for each other have grown. Now both must not only protect each other from the dangers around them – they must also protect their hearts. Another great story from Melanie Dickerson! I was first introduced to Melanie's fairytale re-tellings last year in a blog post.. After checking my local library system I put holds on her first two books, The Healer's Apprentice and The Merchant's Daughter. I enjoyed them immensely even though they were not exactly my usual fiction fare. Each new Melanie Dickerson book I hear about is anxiously awaited and thoroughly enjoyed. The Fairest Beauty was no exception! | . . . This Book earned a 4 Bark rating. . . . |
The story started out a little slow for the first chapter or two but then took off like an arrow from a crossbow.
The growth of the two main characters was fascinating to watch.
To be honest, I didn't quite like Gabe at first. He starts out on the journey not to rescue Sophie but more to prove himself to his father and to spite his older brother. Gabe is a bit insecure, his brother casts a pretty large shadow and Gabe just hasn't lived up to it. He'd rather play his lute and spend time with the ladies. But gradually the weight of responsibility changes him and he becomes a man. But in the mean time he has fallen in love with his brother's future wife...
Sophie has been a servant for as long as she can remember and for some reason the Duchess really has it in for her. She has spent years hearing how ugly and stupid she is, she knows better, of course, but sometimes...
This is a Teen, or YA, book but it will appeal to teens and adults alike. The author has done an excellent job of putting something in the story for all readers.
Well written story with engaging characters and a the lessons of forgiveness and patience are cleverly interwoven in the plot. Don't miss this wonderful book and series!
