I have to admit that I didn't really connect with the characters but the lusciousness of setting and detail more than made up for that. The real star of the story for me was the fascinating world of the Roaring 20's. This story has it all, the stereotypical flappers, car chases, and the lingo is just the bee's knees, but Kristy Cambron also richly layered everything, down to the tiniest detail, into a story that played out like a movie in my mind.
The Illusionist's Apprentice brings one of history's least written-about eras straight to life. It also delves into the mysterious world of vaudeville and illusion. It's a unique combination that makes for a very interesting read. And when you add in the historically accurate investigations into the claims of spiritualism and the hero and heroine's quest for the truth, well, it keeps you wondering what is real and what is just that, illusion...
