Starring
John Wayne ■ Katharine Ross ■ Jim Hutton
Hellfighters Chance Buckman (John Wayne) is the head of a Houston–based oil-fire fighting outfit. With a team that includes Greg Parker (Jim Hutton), Joe Horn (Bruce Cabot), and George Harris (Edward Faulkner), Chance travels around the world putting out blazes at well heads from industrial accident, explosion or terrorist attack. One of my absolute favorite John Wayne movies! I cheerfully watch this one over and over, and never seem to get tired of it. Hellfighters is not exactly what you would call a typical John Wayne movie in that it is neither a Western nor a War film. It is a 'modern' adventure story, and I think that is part of the charm for me. There is a little bit for everyone in this movie. Younger kids may find it a little boring but parents will enjoy the storyline and guys will love the action of the oil well fires. I watched this movie the first time when I was a mid to older teenager and really liked it even then. In the intervening years it has only grown on me even more. There is actually very little violence, the intro is slightly shocking for a couple seconds, and here is the trademark fistfight in the bar which is more comedy than anything else, "He's all mine!" The language is pretty much standard fare for the time. I think this also one of the reasons I like the movie, the oil-well fires themselves make for enough excitement and don't really need violence etc. to upstage them. So, grab your hardhat, red of course, kick back and enjoy the drama and adventure! . 121 Minutes | Principal Cast John Wayne ... Chance Buckman Katharine Ross ... Tish Buckman Jim Hutton ... Why, you poor man, perhaps if I rubbed your neck? Greg Parker: True - every word, true. But it works. Chance Buckman: Can't say I blame you. A fellow as ugly as you are probably couldn't get to first base without a fire. Jack Lomax: There's no mystery. There just seems to be. Tish Buckman: My father is finally going to marry my mother! Isn't that great? Colonel Valdez: [completely nonplussed] That is very nice. [last lines] Tish Buckman: I think we oughta get her a tin hat. |
