Louis L'Amour's
The Shadow Riders
starring
Tom Selleck ■ Sam Elliot ■ Ben Johnson ■ Katharine Ross
The Civil War is over and the Traven brothers are going home. But what Mac (Tom Selleck) and Dal (Sam Elliott) find upon their arrival is a town ravaged by Confederate rebels who've refused to surrender. Swearing to fight the Yankees to the bitter end, the guerillas have kidnapped the Travens' younger sisters - as well as Dal's sweetheart, Kate (Katharine Ross) and plan to sell them to a brothel in Mexico to raise money for guns and bullets. Determined to rescue their loved ones, Mac and Dal bust their Uncle Black Jack (Ben Johnson) out of prison and head south of the border, where they aim to finish a war they thought had already ended.
It's been a lot of years since I read The Shadow Riders by Louis L'Amour, I think I might have still been a teenager, so I really don't remember a lot about it except that the storyline was similar but way different. However, I watch the movie every year or two. Hey, you got Sam Elliott and Tom Selleck, so....
I actually haven't seen much from either actor as a lot of what they've done is outside of my movie comfort zone. Interestingly, I think nearly all of the ones I have watched, not counting any animated voice-overs, have been Louis L'Amour stories. Hmmm.... Anyway, this is a fun cowboy movie with some funny one-liners, some of which I regularly quote in real life, and Ben Johnson's senior delinquent cowboy character is a real hoot. The movie is fairly suggestive but if you are used to today's content standards it won't even faze you in the slightest. If you enjoy the golden age of westerns this movie hearkens back to that time, with greats from the era such as Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr. It's not quite what I would call a classic, I am so NOT ready for the 80s to be 'classic', but I think it could be with a little more time...
