My Review
The best legacy you can leave behind is courage...
I remember watching Courageous the first time not long after it came out on DVD. While I was not part of the target demographic I found the movie so emotionally moving and thought provoking that I thought it to be one of the best Christian movies that I had seen. Now, a decade later I heard that the movie was going to be re-released as Courageous Legacy and would have a new ending. I knew it was a movie that I would definitely be watching.
Once again I was impressed by the quality of the film. I laughed at the humorous moments and I wanted to yell “NO!” at the screen a time or two. Gone are the somewhat cringey Christian films of decades past and they've been replaced by movies like this one that you can cheerfully take your family to see in the theater. The new ending was very well done and matched the spirit of the original movie perfectly.
I came at the movie through the lens of a single girl with no children and once again I was reminded of how lucky and blessed I was to be one of the rare kids who grew up in a two parent home with a good dad who actually cared and spent time with us. I actually watched Courageous Legacy with my parents and watching it as an adult in my 30s gave me a new perspective on the movie and made me think through things a little differently than I did 10 years ago. One of the things that kept popping into my mind was that, while the film is targeted at men and fathers in particular, there is also a great deal for women to glean. How we should be encouraging the men in our lives to be good dads, encouraging the boys in our lives to become good men, and that we need to be good women so we can be that support. The key to all of it, though, is a single word, 'faith'.
Don't make the mistake of believing that this movie is just one long sermon because it's entertaining as well. Courageous starts off with a tense action scene that gets the heart pumping. From there on in there is plenty of drama, humor, and suspense. And one particular scene in the back of a police car, well, all I can say is that it is just perfect!
