I'll be the first to admit that I'm a little skeptical of most modern musicals as they very rarely seem to grab me. Even though they were decades before my time, give me a good old classic musical from the 50s or 60s and I'm good to go. However, every so once in awhile a new movie exception will slip through and Journey To Bethlehem just happens to be one of those exceptions. It had everything that I like to see in a good musical – catchy songs, vibrant costumes, and I will say that the settings and locations were much better in this movie than those painted backdrops and sound stages of yesteryear. The acting was pretty good and I did enjoy the touches of humor that were slipped into a story that is otherwise pretty serious. The best part is that the film is family friendly but it isn't childish – people of all ages will find something in there that they can relate easily relate to.
In the music department I loved how they mixed in a select few familiar Christmas carols with the original songs so the whole movie didn't come across as just another stereotypical Christmas pageant. In a similar vein I really liked the fact that this was a Journey To Bethlehem so much of the focus of the story was on Mary and Joseph and what they might have faced before that night in the stable. Instead of the one dimensional and vague characters that they often are, Mary and Joseph are simply people. They have hopes and dreams and when their lives are turned upside down they both have some serious decisions to make as they come to terms with what faith really means.
There is definitely some poetic license taken in the movie but, hey, it's a musical and that kinda comes with the territory. I appreciated that the filmmakers actually addressed it in the closing credits. Anyway, this movie is a good one that you can take your whole family to and later on add it to your yearly Christmas movie list...
