My Review:
This book is actually a hard book to review. The message it contains is powerful and sometimes hard to hear as an American.
The Beloved Daughter is the story of Chung Cha, the daughter of a North Korean Christian. Sent to a prison/work camp at the age of 12 Chung Cha spends 9 years doing whatever it takes to survive; she sees friendship, betrayal, miracles, torture, and death. If she some how gets out will her life be any better? Is it even possible for things to get any worse than they already are? Her father's belief and her mother's fears shaped her early life and years in prison further changed her into a sometimes angry young woman who is confused about what she believes. God is God but does He really take care of His people?
The story is told in the first person from the perspective Chung Cha telling her daughter the how's and why's of her life. Each wrenching page is told so that the young girl will someday understand her mother and the choices she made.
Well-written and easy to follow The Beloved Daughter is a relatively quick read because it so thoroughly engrosses the reader in Chung Cha's life.
This book should be a must read for any American Christian, these are the things that our Christian brothers and sisters in other countries face every day.
Alana Terry has, what I feel, should become a Christian classic in this book.
If you are looking for a feel-good story with a happy ending then this book isn't for you. But if you are looking for a book that tells the hard truths and will inspire you to want to do something for fellow believers, then you should highly consider reading this book.
