Sci-fi has never been my genre of choice but in recent years I have read a little bit from authors such as Davis Bunn under the name of Thomas Locke. I've found some good reads that way so it was an easy thing to pick up When Legends Rise and dive in.
Slightly reminiscent in style to Ronie Kendig in her Droseran Saga, this start to the Legends Of Light series from Daphne Self had all of the danger, drama, a touch of romance, and tech – plus vivid landscapes – that one could hope for in a sci-fi story.
Overall When Legends Rise was an enjoyable read and I found the tech and the space versus planetary settings to be quite fascinating. I did have some trouble at times with in-chapter scene breaks not always being readily apparent but each time I was able to go back a line or two and get it figured out.
On the gritty side, though clean of language and other on-page negative content, this first Legends Of Light story gets the series off to a good start. After finishing and then reading the tidbit for the next book I am interested in seeing where Daphne Self will take this exciting tale...
Tell Tale Book Reviews gives When Legends Rise by Daphne Self a 4 Bark rating.
More from Daphne
I wrote this book before the show Halo was released, yet I had been playing the Halo video game for years. I’ve always enjoyed the backstory of Master Chief, so the main character of When Legends Rise is a bit like Master Chief John-117. Plus, if you have seen The Mandalorian, then you will see a few common themes between my book and that show. There’s also a bit of a Star Trek vibe in that I use “tech” speak and plausible science.
And what began as one book has now evolved into a 5-book series titled Legends of Light. Book two, What Legends Become, releases in June 2024 and follows the family and the continuing story of salvation, persecution, faith, and hope.
