Heat rose in waves off the blacktop where Leah Miller had parked her police cruiser. Recent statistics showed that the crime rate in St. Ignatius, Montana, was at an all-time low. Leah looped her raven hair into a bun at the nape of her neck, seeking relief from the record-breaking hot spell the county was suffering through this July.

Her police uniform clung uncomfortably to her skin while her thoughts wandered to the things she planned to do when her shift ended. She’d need to check in on Kitty before heading over to have dinner with Marge.

A few years back, Leah had bought her tiny house on Pope Lane. It had taken all her savings, but it was worth it because it represented a huge milestone: putting down roots for the first time since that horrific night. She’d even brought home the stray tabby cat who hung out behind the police station. They were still adjusting to each other, since Kitty had been on her own for a while. In the six months Kitty had lived at Leah’s house, Kitty mostly stayed in the laundry room except at night when she preferred the foot of Leah’s bed.

Since Chief Ellis Petri’s death, Leah had been spending as much time as she could with her adoptive mother, Marge. Losing Ellis had been hard on the both of them, but Marge had been struggling with health issues as well.

Marge and Ellis Petri had been Leah’s rock since that night ten years ago when her world changed forever. Several years earlier, Marge and Leah’s mother had struck up an unlikely friendship, and Marge had become a frequent visitor at Leah’s home. Sometimes Ellis came along. After what happened, Leah had left the Amish community, despite her neighbors offering to take her in. To survive, she’d had to let that part of her life go. Ellis and Marge had taken her in. They’d become her world.

And now Ellis was gone.

“Josiah Zook called from the Mission General Store. He said his daughter Beth is missing.”

At the mention of her former neighbor, Josiah Zook, Leah was immediately transported back to that barn again. Watching as a psychopath slaughtered her entire family.

Snowbound Amish Survival is the perfect title for this book and completely sums up the story in three chilling words. It was an enjoyable read and kept me turning the pages to see how bad things could possibly get for our brave characters the cavalry, or rather police, could drive in to the rescue. I liked the story, though, FYI, bur oaks do not grow in West Kootenai, and enjoyed every bit of the unrelenting danger and taut suspense.

One of my favorite aspects of the story was that both hero and heroine are active Amish. The contrast between the Amish belief in non-violence and the characters' inborn desire to protect the innocent and defenseless helped make the story all the more suspenseful.

If you are up for a freezing adventure in the mountains of Amish country do check out Mary Alford's wintry Love Inspired Suspense novel entitled Snowbound Amish Survival...

Wow! If there's one thing I've come to expect in one of Mary Alford's Montana set Amish Love Inspired Suspense novels, it's plenty of danger and non-stop action. That is precisely what I got in Dangerous Amish Showdown. The story starts off with a real bang, or rather lots of them that just happen to accompany a hail of bullets, and it never lets go from there.

One of the things that I really liked about Dangerous Amish Showdown was Mary Alford's almost unique decision to keep nearly all of the storyline to just one location. It amped up the intensity of the situation in a completely different way from most Love Inspired Suspense books. I enjoyed the step away from the norm and hope to see something similar in more books.

Did I mention that Dangerous Amish Showdown was an intense read? Yes, that's a rhetorical question. For a 224ish page book Mary Alford couldn't have packed in any more suspense and drama if she'd had 300 pages. On the grittier side, this book was everything a Love Inspired Suspense should be and I found it nearly impossible to put down. If you are an Amish romantic suspense fan I definitely recommend this one...just don't it start it at night or you might not get any sleep until you finish...

There are a few authors that I always head for when I want a good Amish Love Inspired Suspense to read, Mary Alford is one of them. Since Montana is not a state that comes to mind when you think of the Amish people, I've really been enjoying her last several books set in the very real West Kootenai (pronounced Koot-nee by locals) Amish settlement in northwest Montana. Shielding The Amish Witness has the same setting, but wow, I'm pretty sure that Mary Alford really amped up the action and danger in it!

Shielding The Amish Witness was non-stop suspense, the characters never get a chance to breathe or take a break and neither do readers. This book was almost impossible to put down because I just HAD to know what would happen next. Snowstorms, fire, car and buggy chases, murder, betrayal, shocking secrets, this book has it all.

If Amish romantic suspense is your thing I would wholeheartedly recommend Mary Alford current Love Inspired Suspense 'series' of books, and Shielding The Amish Witness in particular. They are quick, easy, fast-paced reads and are perfect for an afternoon of escape into a tranquil setting with a surprising penchant for danger and intrigue.

Author Interview with Mary Alford

#1. What started you on the “Alpine Path” (writing career)?
My writing career started because of a love of reading. I don’t remember when I fell in love with reading, I just remember reading—everything.

Like a lot of suspense authors, I fell in love with Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. I read all their books and then, later, graduated to Phyllis Whitney, Victoria Holt, Mary Stewart to name a few. I devoured their books and just somehow knew I wanted to do what they did. And so, I wrote my first book as a pre-teen. It was set in Hawaii and filled with awful cliches. But the fire was lit even though it wouldn’t be until much later that I chose to take that desire to write seriously. When I sold my first Love Inspired Suspense in 2012, it was a dream come true and I still remember the feeling I experienced at getting “the call”.

#2. Are you a full-time author or do you have another job?
I am blessed to be able to write fulltime. When I worked at my last job and hated it, my dream was to one day become a fulltime author. Thanks to my amazing husband and his support, I was able to do that.

#3. What is the hardest part of being an author?
Sitting in front of a blank page on a new story. It’s scary and intimidating, but it is also exciting. And when those first words begin to flow, well, it’s hard to stop for anything, food included.

#4. How has becoming a published author changed your life?
I get to create stories for a living. That’s so awesome. As a suspense author I get to work out the intricate details of my characters worst nightmares and give them a happy ending. I can’t imagine doing anything else and I wish that I could do that for those who are hurting in real life. Wish it were that simple.

#5. What genre(s) do you write and what drew you to it/them?
I tried several different genres when I first started out, but those old books by Victoria Holt and Phyllis Whitney as well as Mary Stewart kept tugging me toward the suspense genre. I started reading all the Christian suspense books I could get my hands on and knew that was where God had been leading me all along.

#6. What is the craziest thing you've done in the name of research?
I would hate for anyone to look at my browser history. There are searches on terrorists, nuclear weapons, how to build bombs, different methods to kill. To someone looking in who didn’t know I was a writer, they’d probably think I had something terrible planned. I’m sure I would end up on several watch lists, if not in an interrogation room being grilled about my allegiances.

#7. If you could give your younger self one piece of advice what would it be?
Follow your dream sooner. I wish I had started writing seriously much earlier.

#8. Tell us something funny, sad, embarrassing, whatever, that has happened in your life as
writer.
My big break came while I was sitting in the parking lot of Ace Hardware in Pagosa Springs, Colorado on my laptop because that was the only place, I could get internet to do my pitch to Love Inspired. If I hadn’t done that interview, I might still be striving for my first book sale. God always works things together for good.

When I look back at all the things that brought me to the place where I am here today, I see God’s hand through it all. When I went off on my own, in a direction that wasn’t what He wanted, I failed. But when I trusted Him. Let Him pave the way for me, He blessed me beyond what I could ever have dreamed.

In April, my 10th Love Inspired Suspense releases. Shielding The Amish Witness comes out April 1st in ebook, and print on April 13th.

I really enjoyed Mary Alford's latest Amish romantic suspense hybrid. And I particularly liked the choice one character had to make about faith and life, it was definitely different from the typical Amish story. Like chills and thrills and serial killer stories? You really must check out the Love Inspired Suspense novel Amish Country Murder.

Wow, I really didn't see this story coming! If I didn't know better I'd almost swear Strike Force was ripped from today's headlines! Then again, who knows how much of this stuff is really going on beyond the knowledge of the average American. Anyway, Mary Alford has a strong start to her Courage Under Fire series with this novel.

Strike Force is a short, easy, read coming in at around 135 pages. It's almost reminiscent of a serial story with each 'chapter' in its own book. Although this is book one in the Courage Under Fire series I do recommend reading Storm Warnings from Mary Alford first. I didn't and I know I would have been able to catch on faster to certain elements of the story if I had.

Strike Force was a good read with plenty of action, adventure, intrigue, betrayal, and yes, definitely some romance. It was fun taking a break from the usual longer romantic suspense novels and I find myself looking forward to the next book in Mary Alford's new series...

Anyway, Amish Country Kidnapping is a wonderful romantic suspense novel with plenty of danger and romance, not to mention scary winter car chases, to satisfy the heart of any Mary Alford fan.

I really liked how determined Rachel was to find her missing sister. She'll brave a Montana winter, her ex-boyfriend, and any number of bad guys to bring her little sister home. But, I think it was the somewhat non-typical Amish fiction ending that I liked the best. Of course, if you want to know what that is you'll just have to snag yourself a copy of Mary Alford's exciting Love Inspired Suspense novel Amish Country Kidnapping.

ONE

Breathe! The disjointed thought sped through Rachel Albrecht’s mind. Her eyes snapped open. She struggled to draw enough air into her lungs. Something covered her mouth and nose. Her heart accelerated as she glanced around the familiar bedroom she once shared with her husband, unable to understand what was happening.

Her last memory was of falling asleep in her favorite chair reading the Bible while waiting for her sister, Eva, to return. Now darkness flooded the room. The lantern’s wick had gone out. Through the pitch-black of night, the truth became horrifying. A strange man towered above her, his big gloved hand covering part of her face. She clawed at it as the last bit of air left her body.

He leaned in close, his face completely obscured by a ski mask, only his eyes visible. They burned into hers, the evil filling them chilling.

“You’re coming with me,” he growled, then removed his hand and hauled her from the chair. The Bible fell to the floor at her feet.

Air rushed into her lungs and she coughed, her eyes filling with tears as she continued to drag in breaths.
“Let’s go,” he ordered and pointed to the door. He shoved something against her side. A gun! The sight of it promised all sorts of unwelcome outcomes. She needed help.

His hot breath fanned across her cheek, his big body blocking her path to the door. If she could make it to the closet, Daniel’s old shotgun was stored there. Though her husband never kept the weapon loaded, she knew where the bullets were and could use the gun to defend herself.

Breaking free, she ran for the closet, her heart echoing in her ears. Rachel barely managed a couple of steps before his hand snaked around her shoulder. She lost her balance and sprawled across the floor.

“Oh no, you don’t,” he snarled. Grabbing a handful of her loose hair, he hauled her to her feet. Pieces of hair were ripped from her scalp. Rachel screamed, frantically scratching at his arms, his chest, anything to free herself.

He jerked her against his body and smacked her hard with his open hand. “That’s for trying to get away from me. You’ve wasted enough of my time. Now, let’s go.”

His hand clutched her arm tight. The gun bit into her ribs.

With all her strength, she tried to twist free, but his grip tightened, fingers digging into her arm. “Eva, run!” Rachel yelled as loud as she could, thinking only of her seventeen-year-old sister asleep in the bedroom next to hers.

Her memory before waking up in the basement the night before was blank. Her head ached. Vision blurred. Dried blood caked the makeshift bandage secured around her head. She was completely at her kidnapper’s mercy. And he had none.

Thinking clearly with her heart threatening to explode from her chest was nearly impossible, but she had to try.

Her hands were zip-tied in front of her body. Beneath her, the cold of the cement floor seeped deep into her limbs. She was tethered to a support beam by a rope around her ankle.

He’d blindfolded her, but she’d pulled it free the second he was gone. She’d been in and out of consciousness most of the day, her body broken from the things he’d put her through.

The room was dark now. A twelve-by-twelve-inch window displayed the blackness of the night outside.

Through the drilling pain in her head, a niggling of something far more terrifying was just out of her reach. A nightmare waiting to be revealed. Last night, when she’d awakened to find the monster standing over her, she thought she’d heard another woman scream. Her stomach clenched. She prayed it was but a hallucination.
