| “What is God like? Does He even exist, other than as a figment of the imagination? Or is He real, a part of daily life and our world? In Sermons from a Soapbox, Ladonna Shanks shares her personal spiritual journey of more than seventy-five years. “I cannot write what I have not experienced,” serves as the base of her easy-to-read, anecdotal essays. The short “sermons” challenge the reader to think, question, search, and consider living where God is . . . in the spiritual, long-term, instead of humankind’s physical, short-term. Interview with Ladonna
The inspiration behind this book is a lovely woman in Ohio. She read my first book, contacted me and asked how many books I had sold. I told her I honestly had no idea, that God’s charge was “for the sake of one.” Her response: “I am that one.” She asked if I was going to write another one. I hadn’t considered it, but she encouraged me to. She was my inspiration and motivation. In fact, I dedicated the book to her. She matters that much to me and the completion of “Sermons from a Soapbox.”
This book was a long, slow, arduous project. I think it took around four years. In the middle of it my partner’s terminally ill condition meant I was a caregiver. I learned a person cannot do two demanding things well at the same time. He became my priority. When he passed, I was then dealing with grief. As I said—long, slow, arduous project.
I cannot write what I have not experienced. Nonfiction is the only way I can write about God and my relationship with Him. My personal easy-to-read anecdotes are honest, open, and transparent.
I hope the reader is encouraged to seek God for themselves. I hope they see God in a way they’ve never seen Him before and they are compelled to seek an eternal life and relationship with their Creator instead of living only in the physical. My prayer is that eyes are opened to see and ears to hear.
Nothing is more important than the things of the Kingdom of God.
More from Ladonna
The easy-to-read anecdotal essays make up both of my books: Tidbits and Pearls, A Book of Essays on Living Everyday Life with God and my newly published Sermons from a Soapbox, Messages of Hope and Encouragement. (My editor calls them “Life’s Lessons Essays.)
I never preach, but I share my life. My desire is to challenge the reader to consider life in the long-term, eternal instead of the short-term, physical. I want them to think.
I am open, honest, and transparent as I present my weaknesses, failures, and inadequacies in contrast to God’s faithfulness, care, and love.
