Historical romance in the Old West

The Trouble With Patience was the first book I've read by Maggie Brendan and I have to say that it really was a sweet historical romance. In many ways it reminded me of those early historicals by Lori Wick etc. that I read as a teen.

I did catch a few historical inaccuracies but to anyone less familiar with Montana history they would likely go unnoticed.

A big plus is the lovely cover. That blue dress is simply scrumptious and the background fits the setting of the story perfectly.

The Trouble With Patience is a nice inspirational tale of forgiveness with a dash of danger and mystery. If you are looking for a lightweight Old West romance to while away a few hours this might be a good bet.

It all started with a single Love Inspired Suspense book by a new-to-me author. You know them, those sneaky little books that suck you in and get you hooked. And hooked I was, on Christy Barritt's suspense stories.

Dubiosity's cover intrigued me from the start, there was something not only mysterious, but also haunting about it. The story proved to be a perfect match to its lovely cover. Fascinating, absorbing. Even when forced, and I mean forced, to put it down to tend to other things I found myself thinking about Savannah and Clive and puzzling over the mystery.

I genuinely liked the main characters, both are hurting people who deal with their circumstances in different ways. Both are in need of peace, a little grace, and a lot of answers.

There was a psychological element in Dubiosity that I really enjoyed. It kept me riveted to the page and second-guessing the motives of almost everyone.

I have read only a few of Christy Barritt's books but I am looking forward to many more. The taut suspense and dash of romance are just perfect. Dubiosity is a perfect example, don't miss it!

Monday Movie - Lured

A serial killer in London is murdering young women whom he meets through the personal columns of newspapers; he announces each of his murders to the police by sending them a cryptic poem. After a dancer disappears, the police enlist an American friend of hers, Sandra Carpenter, to answer advertisements in the personal columns and so lure the killer.

I was snooping around youtube when I found this movie and as a fan of both Lucillle Ball and film noir I decided to give it a whirl. I found it to be a perfectly delightful way to spend an evening.

If one only watches I Love Lucy you will never get to see how versatile she could be. The queen of comedy she most definitely is but she could also hold her own in some more serious roles. In Lured she gets to play both ends of the spectrum with terror in a scene and humor in the next. I got a good laugh when the cop assigned to her tells her to take care of her gun and gives it to her and she turns right around and gives his even bigger one back to him.

This movie has many of the stereotypical elements of film noir that make them so wonderful, fog, dark alleys, those camera angles... and of course you can't forget the damsel who, while even in distress, manages to take care of herself.

I have to admit that I had the killer figured out fairly quickly but events made question a time or two, in the end, though, all of those Agatha Christie books paid off.

Character Spotlight - General Veshiron

Appearance: Short white hair, iron blue eyes, very strong, 6’5” tall.
Age: Late 60s
Race: Human
History: General Marcus Veshiron is one of Arcacia’s most decorated generals. His father also was a great general, and he grew up around the army. He commands great respect from his men and has great devotion to the emperor and his gods. The General has been widowed for many years and only has one child, his daughter, Lydia, but he has a vested interest in the lives of his grandchildren. It is one of his greatest desires to see them succeed in positions of influence and honor while serving the emperor.

Author’s Notes: The General, as everyone calls him, is one of my favorite antagonists to write. He’s so cruel and so cold, and yet, I get his reasons, even if I don’t agree with them. I actually feel like I know him the best of all the antagonists in Ilyon Chronicles. Readers got a chance to see a little bit of his demanding, fiery personality in Resistance, but you get to see much more in The King’s Scrolls. As several of the characters point out, he’s very cruel, especially to his grandson Liam. It seems that all he is capable of seeing are Liam’s apparent failures to be what the General believes he should be. Yet this cruelty is actually coming from a very twisted sense of love. He truly believes he’s doing what’s best for Liam, and all of his grandchildren, by trying to make them fit his expectations.

And the General has very high expectations. Unreasonable expectations. Some may wonder how he could possibly be so cruel, but it’s really not so hard to understand once you start to think about it. Often times people, especially with dominating personalities like the General, expect more and are harder on their families because it means to much more to them. Sure, he wants to see the rest of his men succeed, but his grandchildren are his flesh and blood. They are the ones who matter most to him. We see in Resistance how he talks up Marcus’s achievements and how proud he is. It really means a lot to him to see them succeed. So yes, his cruelty actually comes from loves, as warped as it is. He just doesn’t understand that true love is accepting people for who they are.

As for the creation of the General in the series, he was in my mind from very early on. Actually, some of the interaction between him and Kyrin were some of the first scenes I ever put down on paper. He was one of those characters who steps into your mind almost fully fleshed out from the start as far as his personality. His appearance went through some slight changes, but he was always a very tall man and very strong despite his age. Eventually I came across a photo of Terrance Stamp on Pinterest, and that became my primary inspiration for the General. Just imagine him taller and bigger bodied. And as for voice, well, every time he starts talking I hear something very similar to Alan Dale (King George for those of you who watch Once Upon a Time). And he actually has a good look for the General as well. So combine those two actors, and you’ve got a pretty good idea of how the General looks and speaks. It may seem weird if you’re not an author, but I really love his character. His cruelty makes my heart hurt, but my author brain just loves working with him.

Wonderful conclusion to a marvelous series!

Gosh, could the conclusion to this exciting series get any more intense?! I have been highly anticipating Hidden Agenda for several months now after devouring the first two books in the Southern Crimes series. I quickly became hooked on Lisa Harris's riveting style of suspense, and Hidden Agenda delivered more spine-tingling adventure and romance.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the story is Michael's struggles with years of living as an undercover agent, truth and lies begin to blur. In the movies and books undercover work is glamorized and we never get any idea of the toll it would really take on the operative. I had never really thought about it until I read Hidden Agenda and I give Lisa Harris two thumbs up for telling it a little differently and more realistically.

Armchair Mushing Adventure and Iditarod Fun Facts

1. The Iditarod is the longest dog sled race in the world. It starts on the first Saturday in March every year in Anchorage, Alaska and ends about 1,200 miles away in Nome.

2. Sled dogs are exceptional draft animals for several reasons: They are faster than horses, able to run at up to 12 mph for hundreds of miles and at over 20 mph for shorter periods; they can pull about twice as much weight as horses, pound for pound

3. Every winter, race organizers host an auction where the top bidder wins the opportunity to ride on one of the dog sleds for the first 11 miles.

4. To compete in the Iditarod, a musher must complete three qualifying races.

5. Only northern dog breeds like Siberian huskies and Alaskan malamutes are allowed to race in the Iditarod.

6. The first full-length race took place in 1973. Despite naysayers afraid of sending mushers into such wild territory, the race was successful, with 22 finishers.

7. In 1925, sled dog teams played a crucial role in averting a diphtheria outbreak on the verge of becoming an epidemic. The disease was spreading quickly across Nome, but the nearest serum was in Anchorage, nearly 1,200 miles away. With no pilots available to fly in the treacherous weather—the only one thought fit for the task was out of state at the moment—and seaports iced over, organizers set up a relay system of dog teams, wherein each village along the route offered its strongest dog team. The 20 volunteer mushers and their dogs transported the serum to Nome in less than six days—enough time to prevent the epidemic, saving hundreds of lives. A statue of Balto, the dog that carried the serum at the end of the chain, stands in Central Park in New York City.

8. The starting line can change. Unseasonably warm weather can move the starting line of the Iditarod race—known as the restart location—if the trail begins to melt. In 2003 and now in 2015 the restart has been moved to Fairbanks.

9. The teams average 16 dogs, which means over 1,000 dogs leave Anchorage for Nome.

10. Congress designated the Iditarod a National Historic Trail in 1978.

11. Rick Swenson is the only 5 time winner, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1991.

12. In 1995, Doug Swingley of Montana became the first musher from outside of Alaska to win the Iditarod.

13. Lance Mackey is the only person to have 4 consecutive wins, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010. He is also the first person to win the Yukon Quest 1,000 mile race and the Iditarod in the same year, 2007 and again in 2008.

14. The oldest winner was Mitch Seavey in 2013 at age 53.
The youngest winner was Dallas Seavey in 2012 at age 25.

15. The first woman to win the Iditarod was Libby Riddles in 1985.

16.The closest finish: 1978, when the nose of Dick Mackey’s lead dog crossed one second before Rick Swenson’s

17. A red lantern is awarded to the last musher to finish Iditarod. The longest time for a Red Lantern was 32 days, 15 hours, nine minutes and one second by John Schultz in 1973. The quickest Red Lantern musher Celeste Davis with a time of 13d 05h 06m 40s.

DeeDee Jonrowe, a longtime Iditarod musher, competed in 2003 just three weeks after completing chemotherapy for breast cancer. She told Coping With Cancer, "Any day when the team is really clicking and the trails are fast and the weather is about 10 to 20 degrees, that’s one of the best days of my life. It’s just wonderful. There’s such a feeling of being one, just an extension of [the dogs]. You feel alive and that was one of the reasons why I so badly wanted to be back on the trail.... I didn’t want to feel sick anymore; I wanted to feel alive.”

I would like to thank Spirit Of The North Sled Dog Adventures near Big Sky, Montana, for the AMAZING time we had on both visits. We made some wonderful memories and had a total blast!

Daddy Long Legs is a fluffy song-filled May-December romance starring the best dancer of them all and a cute former ballerina.

I've loved Fred Astaire movies since I first saw Top Hat and Swing Time but Leslie Caron took a little while to grow on me. I had to watch Father Goose before I decided I liked her. Daddy Long Legs is the first movie I saw where she was able to utilize and showcase her lovely ballet skills.

Some of the best parts of the movie, besides Fred's wonderful dancing, are the elaborate sets and great costumes. You just can't miss Leslie's red dress in the sea of pastel during their first dance together.

If you are looking for a serious movie this isn't the one for you. But if you are looking for a lightweight romance with some great song and dance numbers Daddy Long Legs just might be for you.

I've become a real fan of Margaret Daley's writing and especially her Alaskan Search and Rescue series. I'm a sucker for suspense and stories set in Alaska so To Save Her Child was a double winner in my book.

I think To Save Her Child is probably my favorite in the series so far. There was just something about Ella and Josiah, two very wounded people, learning to trust and love again that tugged at the heart.
I also really liked the character of Buddy. Emotional support dogs are a wonderful thing, especially in helping those with PTSD. I fell in love with Buddy and hope he makes an appearance in any further books in the series.

I loved the outdoors scenes in the story, I mean there is nothing like the Alaskan wilderness and a kidnapper to get the heart racing and those pages turning!

The pacing is just right in To Save her Child, with the perfect balance of dialogue and adventure. Margaret Daley knows her craft well and she delivers an exciting tale of danger and romance in the rugged wilds of Alaska.

I first fell in love with Kellie Coates Gilbert's writing when I read her book Mother Of Pearl and I have been hooked, even addicted, ever since. She has such a way of transporting her readers so thoroughly into the lives and hearts of her characters.

The suspense angle in Where Rivers Part was great! And I really enjoyed guessing who was in on it all and who wasn't. There were some people I had pinned but also some real surprises.

I had some reservations about trying out Women's Fiction, I thought it would probably just be fluffy and maybe even a little sappy. Kellie Coates Gilbert more than proved me wrong. These stories are both entertaining and a powerful tool for sharing the power of love and forgiveness.
In Where Rivers Part Juliet's life falls completely apart, anything that can go wrong, does. She has several choices to make and all of them life-changing. When the dust settles where will she stand?

Another great thing about this book is the gorgeous cover! It really draws the eye and inviting you in to partake of the delightful story within the pages.

I really can't say enough positive things about Where Rivers Part, it is a suspenseful story, and a tale of human relationships. Kellie Coates Gilbert has a definite must read in Where Rivers Part!
