My Review

Will he discover what Christmas is really about?

I am one of those people who only watches a limited amount of Christmas movies each year and most of them are old classics that have been favorites for generations. But every so once in awhile a new Christmas movie will come along that I just want to watch. It's Christmas Again was one of those.

It's Christmas Again lived up to my expectations and with some catchy tunes and crazy good dance moves even exceeded them a little bit. The storyline is a loose retelling of A Christmas Carol and they pulled it off so well that it felt like its own story and not just another stereotypical remake. Plus, it's a musical which is nice. In some ways it reminded me of High School Musical from ages ago, only a better story and a much better moral.

It's Christmas Again is a fun music filled extravaganza for the whole family with a theme of kindness and generosity that will last long after the holidays are over. You'll be glad you took the time to see it with your kids or grandkids...

If there's one thing that I know about Joanna Davidson Politano it's that she will always and without fail deliver an extraordinary emotionally moving tale with the most delightfully chilling Gothic overtones. And, as so eagerly anticipated The Lost Melody was all of that and even more...

There are so many things one could say about The Lost Melody but I am at a bit of a loss as to where to start. My mind and heart were so full and my imagination was so completely captured by Joanna Davidson Politano's latest novel that it's difficult for me to pin down individual thoughts and emotions in a precise and cohesive manner.

If there's one setting that is sure to tug at the heartstrings or freeze the blood in your veins it is a mental asylum in the 1800s. I think in our deepest and darkest thoughts each of us has that niggling little fear that or peculiarities and differences might either be more than they are or they might be misunderstood. That, is why The Lost Melody is simultaneously eerie and in many ways freeing.

Joanna Davidson Politano's storytelling skill has never been more in evidence as she takes readers through the darkness of mind, heart, and circumstances before her characters can emerge into the light. The reminder that there is a reason and purpose for everyone and that God's love is with us even in the darkest of places is woven throughout this story that is as intriguing and entertaining as it is thought provoking...

I've been anticipating this third, and sadly final, book in the Triple Threat series. I loved the first book and really liked the second so I knew little sister Grace would get quite a story of her own. And she did...

In many ways Body Of Evidence was more romance than suspense but Irene Hannon so cleverly wove the mystery within the romance that I nearly missed whodunit right right up until he/she was revealed! I say nearly because my growing suspicions were close, so close... At any rate, there was a lot of guessing going on while I read and a few surprises came along the way.

I'm definitely sad to be saying goodbye to the Reilly sisters. All three are talented, smart, tough, and have a real knack for getting into trouble. Their heroes aren't too shabby either. Irene Hannon's Triple Threat leading characters have been so easy to come to like and, though the romance in this one was more emotion based than I expected, I enjoyed reading Grace and Nate's story in Body Of Evidence.

If you are a fan of the Triple Threat series you certainly won't want to miss the conclusion! On the other hand, if you are new to Irene Hannon's latest series you should definitely pop back and read the previous books so you can enjoy Body Of Evidence even more. All three of the books are worth the read...

My Review

This was not the path she wanted to travel...

I've been looking forward to Dream Of Kings with great eagerness for months now. I got hooked on Sharon Hinck's vivid fantasy with her Dancing Realms series so I knew this book would be good...

What I expected was another well-written and engrossing tale with compelling characters, exquisite world-building, and skilled storytelling that holds you captive from start to finish. And I got precisely that...However, what I didn't expect was a loose retelling of the Biblical story of Joseph. I actually wasn't terribly far into the story before that fact started dawning on me so the majority of the tale was spent anticipating what angle Sharon Hinck would take as her Joseph just happens to be a girl...There was no doubt in my mind that the interweaving of Joseph's story within a fantasy setting would be successful. It would be intriguing and entertaining and still encourage a person's faith.

If there is one thing that drives Dream Of Kings it's faith, even when things look their worst and there is nothing but darkness in sight. When we don't understand why and God has placed us in a place or position that seemingly makes no sense. Those moments are when trust and faith are most precious.

I loved Dream Of Kings. It was a wonderful story set in a fantasy realm of diverse peoples, customs, and places. I also loved that the heroine of the story and her hero were a tad older than in her previous series. It was so much fun to read a fantasy story that had everything I've come to love about the genre but where the heroine is not high school age. Sharon Hinck has a real winner with this story and as it is a standalone I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to any fellow Christian/clean fantasy fan whether you are new to the author or well acquainted...

My Review

Change is never quick nor easy....

I have long been fascinated by the Lost Colony Of Roanoke. Childhood history books introduced me to one of American history's greatest mysteries. What happened to them? Where did they go? Shannon McNear gives some fictional possibilities to those intriguing questions in Mary as she continues her Daughters Of The Lost Colony series in this second book...

Mary was a bit of a mixed bag for me. On the one hand it was a bit slow moving and hard to get into but on the other hand I love the way Shannon McNear allows all of her characters, Kurawoten and English alike, to speak and act in the ways they would have 400 years ago. Unvarnished and sometimes politically incorrect by modern standards, that historical accuracy in the Daughters Of The Lost Colony is both a breath of fresh air and much appreciated.

If there is one single word to be chosen to represent Mary it would be adjustment. As the English and Kurawoten start to blend their cultures and learn about their two very different belief systems many issues start to arise. From questions of morality and tradition to petty jealousies to threats from outside. In this second Daughters Of The Lost Colony book, Shannon McNear brings up all of those might-have-beens, and it's those might-have-beens that really get you pondering the past and the here and now...

Why did I write Mary? The series started as an idea suggested by my editor and soon became something of an obsession. This installment was inspired partly by the Legend of the Coharie, a fragment of the very murky history surrounding the Roanoke Colony and the Lumbee people of North Carolina. According to this legend, George Howe, the son of the colonist by same name who was brutally murdered a few days after their landing on Roanoke Island, married a daughter of Manteo, the Native man who traveled twice to England, later led a group of the colonists inland for refuge and eventually became an ancestor of the Lumbees. Then, as my Lost Colony research expanded, my interest in the nuances of two cultures meeting and blending grew into a desire to pay tribute to what might have been the first (and possibly only) example of European and Native peoples living together in peace. Imagine if this had been the defining moment of our country’s founding?

As usually happens, fictional characters (even those based on historical figures) sooner or later run away with the story—and that’s the part I find most exciting! I hope you, the readers, also enjoy this tale of Mushaniq (squirrel in Carolina Algonquian) and Georgie, which serves as both a parallel story and sequel to Elinor.

A Very Orgel Lunch

I enjoy Mrs. Orgel’s cooking. Her meals are always better than whatever Mom puts together. I’m not sure why. Maybe it is because Mrs. Orgel has traveled a great deal and always fixes something exotic. Maybe it’s because my mom is always busy with work, so we eat a lot of take out. I like Mrs. Orgel’s food, but sometimes I can’t really determine what I am eating. It usually tastes pretty good, so I figure today it will be the same.
“Hello, Marjorie and Luke,” Mr. Orgel says opening the door.
“Hello,” replies my mother.
“Hi.” I enter the room full of souvenirs representing a well-traveled life.
“Lydia is in the den. Go on in.”
“Hey, Lydia,” I quietly say as I walk into the den. I have grown accustomed to these Sunday lunches when Lydia and I hardly speak. But we are both comfortable with this lack of conversation. Being in the same grade doesn’t mean you have to be friends. Lydia glances up from her book, smooths her already perfectly smoothed down brown hair, and says, “Hello.” She returns to her book without batting her long lashes my way. I have come to believe she has the longest eyelashes of anyone I have ever known.

Terry Overton obtained her Ph.D. in Psychology and her Ed. D. in special education. She taught in public schools and was a school psychologist and a professor before retiring in 2016. She began her second “career” after retirement and now writes Christian fiction books and devotionals and hopes to share the Christian worldview through her writing. My Review

Can they find out whodunit in time?

It's no secret that I love dog (cats too) stories...any breed and nearly any genre...but Dog Days Of Summer is the best of both worlds as it just happens to be a Christian cozy mystery with some canine and even feline hijinks. What more could a person ask for on a cold rainy fall day, hmm?

This is the second book in the Gone To The Dogs series (don't you just love the title?) of mysteries and Kathleen Y'Barbo's first contribution to it. I have to say that she did an excellent job! Not only with her own story but in meshing this second book with the first. All of the characters were pretty much as quirky and crazy as they were in Off The Chain – and that is saying something! Kathleen Y'Barbo certainly knows what she is doing!

One of the things that I appreciated about this story was the changing dynamic between mother and daughter. Even though this is a cute cozy mystery one could feel – and probably understand quite well – the frustration of both generations as they try to navigate the waters of the need for increasing care of an aging parent while trying to maintain a little independence for them both.

If you enjoy cozy mysteries and dogs you are in for a real treat with the Gone To The Dogs series. They are such fun to read and you can't help but enjoy every minute spent within its pages. Just as I knew it would be, Dog Days Of Summer was no exception. I liked both books and I am really looking forward to more tail-wagging fun with this series...

Do you love dogs…or cats…or both…? I’m firmly in the “both” category. Since childhood I’ve always lived in homes that had at least one or the other, usually several of each. With every dog or cat comes at least one good story. One of my favorites is the tale of Bandit, the inspiration for the cover of my cozy mystery DOG DAYS OF SUMMER.

Once upon a time there was a black and white dog named Bandit. He was an English Springer Spaniel by birth but was completely convinced he was human. Bandit loved his people—three growing boys and a baby girl—even more than he loved popcorn and playing keep away (his version of catch). After many years, Bandit’s people grew up and he grew old. Toward the end of his very long and pampered life, he was plagued by the unwanted and yet much appreciated friendship of an ornery orange striped cat named Baby and a snooty pedigreed feline named Fifi.

Everyone loved Bandit…except the territorial squirrel who lived in a tree in our back yard in Southeast Texas. From the moment Bandit joined the family, the furry fellow was determined to rid himself and his back yard of the trespassing canine. The squirrel’s favorite tactic was to tease Bandit until the dog chased him up a tree. Once treed, the crafty critter would run around the trunk just out of Bandit’s reach. Once the squirrel tired of this, it would retreat to a limb. There, the battle of the backyard beasts would commence again but with the squirrel lobbing pinecones and the dog trying to catch them.

While every good story has a beginning, middle and end, unfortunately at the end of this one there was no winner in the dog vs. squirrel wars. A job transfer led us to Houston where squirrels were in abundance in our new neighborhood but none of them were nearly as much fun as the one Bandit left behind. The last time I spoke with the owners of our old house, they told the funniest story: they loved their new home, but there was this squirrel in the back yard that kept throwing pinecones at everyone.

In DOG DAYS OF SUMMER, I tell the story of another Texas back yard. This one is located in Brenham, Texas, and it is about to become a very special place for some very special dogs named Patsy and Cline. Have I mentioned these dogs belong to a country singer named Trina who has a mother named Mama Peach who happens to own a cat named Hector that dislikes almost everyone and can open doors? Then there’s the problem of the next door neighbor and his penchant to forget to close the lid on his grill when he’s cooking? Did I mention that Patsy and Cline enjoy nothing more than whatever they happen to find on an unguarded grill? While the two furry scoundrels are rounding up trouble next door, there is even more trouble happening at the building site for Second Chance Ranch Dog Rescue on the other side of the property. Apparently not everyone is happy about the new neighbors. The mystery is who that person might be. While you’ve got to read DOG DAYS OF SUMMER to find out, I can give you one hint: it’s not the squirrel!
