Let me just start off by saying that Dangerous Deception was one of the most interesting Love Inspired Suspense novels that I've ever read. Amnesia is a well used plot device in romantic suspense but it's almost always attributed to an injury or a traumatic event that the brain wishes to forget. I think this may be the first time that it may be drug and brainwashing induced. I loved it!

Evelyn M. Hill is not exactly a new-to-me author but this is a new genre and I have to say that she does just as good with romantic suspense as she did with historical romance. I was kept guessing, which is always a fun part of reading, and, boy, was I in for a few surprises!

I sincerely enjoyed Dangerous Deception and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to any Love Inspired Suspense fan or romantic suspense lover. I, for one, can't wait to read more from Evelyn M. Hill, she's good!

1. What was the inspiration for Dangerous Deception?
This story started with Hannah Upp. She was a schoolteacher in Manhattan. One day, she went out jogging and disappeared. Three weeks later, a Staten Island ferry captain spotted her floating face down in the river. When she was hauled out, she woke up. She had no idea of why she was in the water or where she'd been.

Doctors eventually diagnosed her with a type of retrograde amnesia known as a dissociative fugue. This condition is rare, but there have been documented cases of it.

Typically, people with this disorder leave home and set up a new life with a whole new persona. A reverend became a storekeeper. A man who lived in the middle of the country traveled to the coast and became a sailor. In each of these cases the people came back to their original identity with no memory of the missing time. The reverend knocked on his landlord’s door and asked “Where am I?” Hannah Upp fretted during her hospitalization because she had to go set up her schoolroom for the new school year—which had started three weeks before.

Hannah's story started me thinking. What if a woman were given a drug that suppressed her memory, mimicking this condition? That led me to Rachel..

2. How long did it take to write Dangerous Deception?
Like many writers, I had planned to participate in Nanowrimo, the National Novel Writing challenge to write a 50,000 word novel in the month of November. I had a story and was all set to begin. But I got the idea for Dangerous Deception on November 1st, and I was obsessed with writing it instead. I finished the first draft in two weeks. (Sadly, the revisions lasted much longer. Revisions are not my friend.)

3. Who were my favorite characters?
I had a lot of fun with the secondary characters in this story. Dangerous Deception is set in an imaginary small town on the Oregon coast, and I loved the opportunity to fill the town with colorful characters. I think my favorites were the two little old ladies who hung out in the cafe where Rachel worked. They wanted to know everything that was going on in town. They meant well, but they certainly were nosy!

4. What do you hope readers will take away from Dangerous Deception?
I hope that readers will learn that fear does not need to rule over you. We're all tired of hearing phrases like "unprecedented times" and "hard challenges ahead" but the worst thing we have to wrestle with right now is fear itself. No one can predict the future, but we can all put our trust in a Higher Power.

5. What made you choose the location for Dangerous Deception?
All my books are set in Oregon. I wanted this story to be set in a beautiful small town, so I created an imaginary town, Sleepy Cove, that is roughly situated on the coast near Newport, Oregon. You can see images that inspired the town on my Pinterest page (https://www.pinterest.com/evelynalexie/dangerous-deception/) as well as pictures of what I thought Michael and Rachel might look like.

6. How did you name your characters?
For the hero, Michael Sullivan, I tried out names until I found one that felt like it suited him. (Characters don't always "like" a name, somehow. I'm not sure why.) The heroine was given the name Rachel Garrett because another character was a science fiction geek and chose to name her after someone in an episode of Star Trek.

7. Tell us something funny, sad, embarrassing, whatever, that happened involving this book.
Something that I find funny, sad, AND embarrassing was the fact that I needed a copy editor to point out that in a crucial scene Michael's gun appeared, then disappeared, then appeared again all in the space of a few pages. Times like that I wish that I wrote in the Fantasy genre, where a disappearing gun might be a useful plot point instead of a forehead-slapping moment. Most of the time, however, I love writing romance novels. I always enjoy watching two characters grow together and decide to spend a lifetime of love with each other!

#1. What was the inspiration for this book?
I saw a French film, The Return of Martin Guerre, which featured a man who came to a village claiming to be a woman’s long-lost husband. I thought it would be interesting to reverse the situation. I started with a man waking up in a strange room. He doesn't know his name or where he is. A woman comes in and tells him that she’s his fiancée . . .

What would he do?

#2. How long did it take to write this book?
I wrote this story for the Love Inspired Historical Manuscript Matchmaker contest, so I had to finish it within a few months. It was an intense experience!

#3. Do you have a favorite character in this book?
Actually, my favorite character is the kitten, Elijah. I love his cheerful self-confidence, and his utter trust that his humans will feed him. (And they do, of course, though Matthew tries hard to train him to hunt mice on his own.)

When I wrote His Forgotten Fiancée, I was fostering a litter of completely adorable kittens. I put a lot of their antics into the book. Including the one morning when I stumbled out of bed and came into the kitchen to find that the wind had blown the back door open. Having my priorities straight, I made a bee-line for the coffee pot. To get there, I had to pass the kittens, who were playing with their mouse toy. “Hmmn,” I thought. “I don’t remember getting them a mouse toy that had ears. And… why are its legs moving… oh dear.”
My hero and I both really wanted a kitten who could take care of mice on his own.

#4. How did you name your characters?
I chose Liza and Matthew’s names by searching through the lists of people who traveled the Oregon Trail. There’s a running joke throughout the book where Matthew and Liza’s father keep feeding the kitten snacks when she wasn’t around, and so he never shows any interest in her food. She decided that, like the prophet Elijah, the ravens must be bringing him food.

#5. What made you chose some of the specific locations in this book?
I live in the area, and I wanted the reader to see how beautiful it is. I drove around the farming country in Washington County until I could find a spot where you could see Mount St. Helens and Mount Hood at the same time. People who came out to Oregon found it very strange to be living in a valley that had volcanoes on the horizon, but I think they’re beautiful. At least, they are when they’re dormant.

#5. What do you hope readers will take away with them when they read this book?
To place a higher value on faith and forgiveness, and not give in to the all-too-human inclination to hold on to anger when someone’s hurt you. God sees into their hearts, as he sees into ours, and he can forgive. We should too.

Evelyn M. Hill

According to family tradition, Evelyn M. Hill is descended from a long line of Texas horse thieves. (But when your family is not only Texan, but Irish, tall tales come with the territory.) This might explain why she devoted much of her childhood to writing stories about horses. Once she grew up, the stories naturally featured a tall, handsome cowboy as well. She lives at the end of the Oregon Trail, where she gets to do all her historical research in person.

Will he remember her in time?

Ever since we got our first computer when I was about 11 or 12 and I played Oregon Trail II for the first time I've loved all things Oregon Trail. I've never seen the wagon ruts etc. but I've enjoyed photos and books about it. Enter in His Forgotten Fiancee, the story of a couple who fell in love on the Oregon Trail and, now, a year later, he shows up on her doorstep and has no clue who she is...or who he himself is.

This Book received a 4 Bark rating.

I really enjoyed this debut novel from Evelyn M. Hill, from the adorable tuxedo kitten on the cover to the sweet romance and dash of mystery and danger within its pages. His Forgotten Fiancee is fun read with some great historical details embedded within a story of finding love, forgiveness, and letting the hurts of the past go. If you are looking for a nice, easy to sit back and read, historical romance you should give Evelyn M. Hill's book a shot.
