Historical Gabriel's Atonement
|
-From the back cover-
What forgiveness can there be
for a man like Gabe?
Gabe Coulter is content with his comfortable life as a professional gambler – but when a man with a gun confronts him in a dark alley and demands his money back, everything changes. Gabe feels guilt over the death of Tom Talbot, even though it was self-defense. And when Gabe learns the man left a wife and child behind, the only way he knows to atone for the death is to return the money to Talbot's wife.
Lara Talbot struggles to feed her family, keep her rebellious sister in line, and care for her young son and sick grandpa, but she's surprised to feel a sense of relief when she learns of Tom's death – after all, he had never been a good husband or provider. When the charming Gabe Coulter arrives in Kansas and has the uncanny knack of always being in the right place at the right time to come to Lara's aid, she can't help but wonder about his motives – especially when he offers her a hand in securing property in the land rush in the Oklahoma Territory. At first, Gabe keeps his part in Tom's death a secret, but by the time he decides he needs to tell Lara, he fears the news will destroy their budding relationship. What will Lara do when she learns the truth?
Great historical fiction!
A wonderful story featuring a little-written-about piece of Oklahoma history. I have watched a couple of movies about the Oklahoma Land Rush but I really appreciated the detail in this book. |
This Book received a 4 Bark rating.

One of the things that I really liked about Gabriel's Atonement is that the changes in Gabriel's life come realistically slow. He doesn't magically go from sinner to saint in one chapter.
Vicki McDonough does historical fiction very well and Gabriel's Atonement is a great example. Don't miss the start of a fascinating series from award-winning author Vicki McDonough!
Tell Tale Book Reviews gives Gabriel's Atonement by Vicki McDonough a 4 Bark rating.

Historical Romance/Christmas
The Westward Brides Christmas Collection
by
Wanda E. Brunstetter, Susan Page Davis, Melanie Dobson,
Cathy Liggett, Vickie McDonough, Olivia Newport,
Janet Spaeth, Jennifer Rogers Spinola, and MaryLu Tyndall
-From the back cover- Christmas Dreams Are Realized in the Old West Only the brave – or foolhardy – would attempt a westward journey during the winters of the 1800's. But the promises of a new life are strong for those taking wagon trains, stagecoaches, or passenger trains to new settlements, as well as those using any excuse to run from their pasts, gain adventure, and find a place to call home. In this exclusive collection of nine Christmas romances, readers will experience unique Christmas celebrations along with historical characters penned by some of Christian fictions beloved authors, including New York Times bestselling author WANDA E. BRUNSTETTER. A Christmas Prayer BY WANDA E. BRUNSTETTER Another Christmas Story BY SUSAN PAGE DAVIS The Reluctant Runaway BY MELANIE DOBSON A Stagecoach Christmas BY CATHY LIGGETT Forging a Family BY VICKIE MCDONOUGH Snow Song BY OLIVIA NEWPORT Christmas, Maybe BY JANET SPAETH The Christmas Bread BY JENNIFER ROGERS SPINOLA Christmas Bounty BY MARYLU TYNDALL As Christmas approaches, will nine couples find new hope in romance, or will they have to run back to where they came from? Sweet stories, wonderful authors! A delightful collection of novellas from nine very talented authors. I enjoyed each of these stories and the cheery Christmas tone. I loved the westward theme of each of these stories. And I think my favorite was The Christmas Bread partly because it featured the Bozeman Trail. I also really enjoyed not only the date span of the stories, ranging all through the 1800's, but the variety in locations from California to Texas to Missouri to Nebraska and what would later become Wyoming. Each novella is a quick read and can easily be finished in a sitting. I read them almost like very long chapters. Perfect for relaxing on a cold and snowy day. An all around enjoyable collection of Christmasy historical romances! Tell Tale Book Reviews gives The Westward Brides Christmas Collection by Wanda E. Brunstetter, Susan Page Davis, Melanie Dobson, Cathy Liggett, Vickie McDonough, Olivia Newport, Janet Spaeth, Jennifer Rogers Spinola, and MaryLu Tyndall a 3.5 Bark rating. | This Book received a 3.5 Bark rating. |

Historical
Song Of The Prairie
Pioneer Promises book 3
by Vickie McDonough
-From the back cover- A Runaway New Mother... Janie Dunn's dreams of being an opera singer suddenly dim when, at her dying cousin's request, she flees Boston with her cousin's newborn son to protect him from his abusive father. She moves to Kansas to live with her brother, who poses as her husband to protect her identity, lest the baby's father seek her out. But it's hard living a lie, even more so the closer she grows to her neighbors on the prairie. A Widower Missing His Children... Aaron Harper lost his wife four years ago in a tragic accident. Without a mother to help raise and educate his two children, Aaron sent them to live with his brother and sister-in-law in Windmill, a few hours' train ride from his family's homestead, to attend the local school. Yet Aaron regrets seeing his son and daughter so rarely. He yearns to have them under his roof again, but without someone to educate them, it's an impossible scenario. A Past That Seems Irreparable... Life takes a dire turn for Janie when her brother dies. The Harper family turns out to be the greatest blessing – particularly handsome Aaron Harper, who keeps the farm running in her brother's absence. But Janie knows his help is only temporary. Is a marriage of convenience to Aaron Harper the answer to both their problems? And is Kansas far enough away from Boston that she is safe from the baby's vengeful father? Or will he come after her and expose the secret she's worked so hard to conceal? | This Book received a 3.5 Bark rating. |
Song Of The Prairie may look like your average prairie romance from the lovely cover but there is more to it than first impressions.
The harshness of the prairie that was a reality is often forgotten in novels but not so in this one. Vickie McDonough has accurately portrayed how life back then was hard and the people were tough, but faith and family held them together.
Populated with a variety of delightful and some not-so-nice characters, readers will find themselves joining in the joys and fears of Janie, Aaron, and their family.
This slim little novel is a quick but thought provoking read. Song Of The Prairie will leave you admiring the pioneer spirit and thinking about how even the smallest choices we make affect those around us.
I hadn't read any of Vickie McDonough's full-length novels until now, and since I enjoyed this one so much I will be looking forward to reading more of them.
Fans of prairie fiction and Vickie McDonough will find a treat in Song Of The Prairie.
Tell Tale Book Reviews gives Song Of The Prairie by Vickie McDonough a 3.5 Bark rating.

Author
Reading and history have been my passion since early childhood when my parents encouraged both. I was introduced to Christian fiction around age 4-5 while listening to radio drama adaptations of books by great authors including Janette Oke. I have been a voracious reader and avid library patron ever since. I started Tell Tale Book Reviews in December 2012. I am also an active volunteer in the areas I hold most dear, library, museum, and pets. Hobbies include a small bead jewelry business, watching classic movies/ TV, listening to Irish/Celtic music, and autograph collecting.
TELL

Born in October, he was a purebred Alaskan Malamute. His red fur and sparkling green eyes highlighted his happy and loving personality. He loved walks, hugs, sneaking human food treats, and Milk Bones.
