Book Interview with Terri Reed about her
upcoming release Secret Mountain Hideout

#1. What was the inspiration for this book?
Secret Mountain Hideout is the second book in my series set in the fictional town of Bristle Township, Colorado revolving around the men and women of the sheriff’s department. As I was writing the first book, Buried Mountain Secrets, I fell in love with the town and the mountains and had the thought it would be a great place to hide. The germ of a story idea took root. Soon I started developing the character of Ashley Willis. Why was she hiding? What was at stake? Who in the sheriff’s department would be a perfect match to both protect her life but capture her heart? As I took stock of the deputies, I realized the youngest and newest member of the team would be a good fit to pair with Ashley.

#2. How long did it take to finish writing this book?
From beginning to end, it took roughly four months to write Secret Mountain Hideout, with a week pause in the middle to do copy edits for Seeking the Truth, which came out in August.

#3. Do you have favorite character(s) in this book?
Every character is my favorite while I’m writing them. LOL For this book, I enjoyed discovering the many layers of Ashley. She constantly surprised me with her backstory and the choices she made throughout the book. I always think a character will be one way but during the writing process, they seem to have a mind of their own.

#4. What do you hope your readers will take away with them when they read this book?
I hope readers will be encouraged to do the hard things in life, even when they are scary and risky. Ashley had to be brave to face her fears but with God and the love and support of friends, she came through the situation and was better off for it.

#5. What made you choose some of the specific locations in this book?
I chose Colorado because it’s a beautiful state with a wonderful landscape that could be used in a variety of ways through many different stories.

#6. How did you name your characters?
Believe it or not, the hero is named after K-9 Chase, a beautiful and heroic German shepherd dog with my local county sheriff’s department. For Ashley’s name, I wanted something that was very southern California sounding yet had a bit of a lyrical ring to it. I went to a baby-naming site and looked through the popular names for the year the character would have been born. There were many names that I thought would work but I kept coming back to Ashley. So I went with it.

#7. Share with us a thought, Bible verse, whatever is on your mind/heart.
At the beginning of every Love Inspired and Love Inspired Suspense book is a Bible verse. For each book I write I try to be open to God’s leading on the verse. Sometimes I’ll hear something in church or read a passage in the Bible or Bible study I’m working on that will resonate with me for the story. Sometimes I pick a word that has significance to the story and search the Bible for verses that speak to that significance. This is what I did For Secret Mountain Hideout. I searched the Bible for a verse that would bring comfort to someone who was hiding from evil. I came across Psalms 64:1-2.

When I read the verses I felt a stirring in my soul and I knew this was the correct passage to use, because it’s a layered prayer for God’s protection, both physical and emotional. The fear that comes from being persecuted and hunted can be as debilitating as a physical injury. Though Ashley was afraid of being physically hurt and she was being tormented with fear and dread, as well, and needed God to see her through the difficult and scary situation. Which He did and he also gave her someone on earth to help her, Chase.

What a great story! I think this might be my favorite Terri Reed book...so far, anyway. Plenty of tense moments as the characters, and readers, are tossed into murder and mayhem right from the start.

I have to say that Frosty was probably my favorite character, though Ellie ran a close second. My dad had a German Shepherd that our family loved to pieces so maybe I'm just a little biased in their favor.

If you enjoy romantic suspense as much as I do, and love dogs, you really should check out Seeking The Truth, as well as the rest of the True Blue K-9 Unit series. Each book can be read standalone, like I'm doing, but the overarching mystery probably makes more sense if you read them in all in order.

It's been quite awhile since I've read a Terri Reed book but only a few pages into Buried Mountain Secrets I was reminded why she is one of my favorite Love Inspired Suspense authors.

Even though I am more of a dog person I absolutely loved the hero's profession as a mounted patrolman. Basically I'm just a soft touch for stories about working animals, including horses...

Lots of action, adventure, romance, and some surprises made this story quite a fast-paced read. And it's definitely one you shouldn't miss...

What a great story! Terri Reed drops readers right into the action on the first page and holds them captive until the end. There was enough danger, romance, and betrayal to satisfy my desire for murder and mayhem. In my opinion, Mission To Protect is Terri Reed's best book yet!

I really enjoyed the start to this new continuity series, Military K-9 Unit, from Love Inspired Suspense. It is part of a series but I think that it can also easily be read as a standalone.

#1. Coffee or Tea? I used to be more of a coffee drinker then a tea drinker. But I realized it was doing a number on my tummy so I switched to pretty much to only tea. Now I drink chai tea lattes, Green teas, Black teas, and herbal teas.

#2. Print or E-reader? I resisted the e-reader revolution for a long time, but have decided I like being able to read on my phone when I find myself waiting, like the doctors office. Or if I just don’t have a physical book that I want to read. But my preference is still print books. Especially at night. I like to read before I fall asleep

#3. Cake or Cookies? I’m more of a cookie person. However, I do enjoy red velvet cupcakes and carrot cake. As for cookies, I like snickerdoodles, Sugar cookies, and chocolate chip cookies as long as there’s not too many chips in the cookie.

#4. Early Bird or Night Owl? I am neither an early bird or a night owl. I like to sleep in and I like to go to bed early. I function best between 9 AM and 4 PM.

#5. Introvert or Extrovert? At the moment I am a little of both. As a child I was horribly shy. To the point of painful. As I aged and matured, I came out of my shell. Especially as I pursued a modeling career in New York City. You can’t be shy in a profession like that.

#6. Historical or Suspense? I started out reading Nancy Drew mysteries when I was in middle school, along with every Judy Bloom book I could find, but then my grandmother introduced me to historical romance novels and I fell in love with this genre, as well.

#7. Green or Pink? I love colors. Pink, green, blue, purple, yellow, red… if I have to pick between green or pink, I would say green because it looks the best on me.

Bonus. Share with us a thought, Bible verse, whatever is on your mind/heart.
At the beginning of every year I asked God to give me a word for the year. This year the word for me is simplify. I’m still trying to figure out what this means for me and how to put the word in action in my life.

Yuletide Stalking
Terri Reed has long been a favorite Love Inspired Suspense author but this is the first novella that I've read by her. I loved it! The danger and romance were the perfect combination!

Overall
I'm still relatively new to Love Inspired Suspense novellas but thoroughly enjoying them. The holiday setting for these stories was a nice touch.

I'll admit that I've only read one of the books in the Classified K-9 Unit mini-series, and there are some spoilers in this book, but I don't think it really messed up the story for me. I'll still go back and read as many of the previous books as I can.

Great Christmas novellas from two very talented in one book that you won't want to miss! Hey, you really can't go wrong with a book that features dogs!

If Guardian hadn't been written by one of my favorite Love Inspired Suspense authors, Terri Reed, I would have wanted to read it anyway. It doesn't take much to figure out that I'm a soft touch for anything featuring dogs, and this one has TWO furbabies on the cover!

So, Terri Reed is a favorite of mine in the romantic suspense genre and Guardian totally lived up to expectation. The story kinda starts out with a bit of a bang and then took off on a wild ride of danger and romance. The characters are likable and the action kept me interested and engaged, not to mention unable to put the book down.

This book is part of a continuity series, one that I'm definitely going to have to read, but could be read standalone, though, the main conflict won't be resolved until the final book.

Guardian is a great start to what will be one exciting series and is a must read for Terri Reed fans and lovers of romantic suspense.

My all-time favorite Christmas movie is A Charlie Brown Christmas, released in December of 1965. This is the longest-running cartoon special in history, airing every year but this classic almost didnâ€™t make it on the air. The studios hated it, No television networks wanted to play it. They didnâ€™t like the religious theme running through the story or the contemporary jazz score. It was criticized for not having a laugh track, and for using voices of real children (except for Snoopy, who was voiced by the showâ€™s animator Bill Melendez). The creator of the show, Charles Schulz, wanted the central meaning of the show to reflect his own beliefs of Christmas. With his clout, Schulz managed to get his little animated cartoon to air...

Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or is it purely all imagination?

I like to add a bit of real life to my stories. There are several scenes in A Family Under the Christmas Tree that come from personal knowledge. The setting of Bellevue Washington is where I have family so I was able to describe it from having visited the city. In the story, the characters visit a Christmas tree farm, which I patterned after a local tree farm here that weâ€™d visit often when my children were young. It was fun to remember back to those days with my kids.

The characters of A Family Under the Christmas Tree are very dear to me. I really liked David, Sophie and Troy. As well as Grandma Louise and Simon. I enjoyed developing them because they surprised me the more as I dug into them. I had this germ of an ideaâ€”I wanted to do something along the lines of Scrooge meets Mary Poppins. As part of developing the story I find photos of actors that resemble how I see my characters. Having the visual helps me in my descriptions as well as makes them more three dimensional in my own mind.

Christmas Cookies

Why is it that treats at Christmas are so much more special? Is it that we indulge without the guilt we place on ourselves the rest of the year?

For me the Christmas season isn’t complete without Christmas cookies. The best cookies are made of shortbread. Shortbread originated in Scotland and may have been made as early as the 12th century but is mostly attributed to Mary Queen of Scots (16th century) who favored them. I find it fascinating to discover the history behind my favorite treats.

In my story, A Family Under the Christmas Tree, my heroine Sophie and her grandmother help young Troy bake and decorate cookies. A tradition I’ve done with my mother when I was young and one I have continued with my own kids.

Here’s my daughter’s recipe and a picture of our cookies. We didn’t go with the traditional wheel shape. It’s Christmas. We had to use our cookie cutters! And nothing is better at Christmas time than decorated cookies with hot chocolate, marshmallows and peppermint sprinkles.

Shortbread Cookies

8 oz butter (room temperature)
4 oz powdered sugar (sifted)
¼ tsp vanilla
10 oz pastry flour

Cream butter, sugar and salt
Mix in vanilla
Form dough into rolls or press into pans and chill
Cut ¼ inch slices of dough or cut with molds and bake at 350 degrees about 8-10 minutes.

Everything about A Family Under The Christmas Tree was a delight to read! I've been a fan of Terri Reed's romantic suspense for awhile now but had no clue that she could write Holiday-themed romantic comedy equally as well. But I LOVED this book! It was funny, sweet, sometimes poignant, tale of love and family.

I'm a sap for books with pets in them and it only took a few pages for a certain Bernese Mountain Dog named Riggs to become pretty much my favorite character. He's just so cute and lovable! Anyone who has ever had a big dog will quickly recognize and chuckle at his puppy antics.

With Christmas just around the corner and snow falling it's a great time to stay inside with a good book,
one that will make you laugh, and make you think, and make you fall in love with the characters. Terri Reed's delightful new book A Family Under The Christmas Tree would be the perfect choice.

#1. What started you on the “Alpine Path” (writing career)?
Like many writers, I was making up stories from a young age. I would create worlds and adventures for my dolls and stuffed animals as a way to entertain myself. When I out grew that stage, I began writing my imaginary character and their adventures down. In my late twenties I took a writing class at the local college and then joined Romance Writers of America where I learned the craft, networked with authors and other in the industry. I began submitting with the hope of publishing in 1996. In 2001 I sold my first novella and then in 2003 my first novel. Forty plus books later, I still enjoy writing.

#2. Are you a full-time author or do you have another job?
When I first started writing toward publication, I had three part-time jobs: I taught an exercise class, did daycare out of my home and worked at Nordstrom department store evenings and weekends. Not long after I sold my third book I was able to step away from retail and decided I liked taking exercises classes more than I liked teaching them. I did the daycare until my youngest reached high school. From that point on I have been blessed to write full-time.

#3. What is the hardest part of being an author?
The self-promotion. I don’t relish the limelight. I’d rather write the books and have someone else promote them.

#4. How has becoming a published author changed your life?
I was able to give up my part-time jobs, I’ve been blessed to meet the most interesting and generous people through the years and I’ve also been blessed to travel, even if it’s only from my desk chair.

#5. What genre(s) do you write and what drew you to it/them?
I write romance and romantic suspense for the Christmas market. I wanted to tell stories from my worldview and I love happy ending as well as adventure and mystery.

#6. What is the craziest thing you've done in the name of research?
I zip lined on Catalina Island, 300 feet above a canyon floor, over trees with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. It sounded fun. But I realized that I have a little issue with heights. Especially, dangling from a cable above the treetops. I was so out of my comfort zone and ready to quit after the first run but there was no other way to get to the bottom, so I gathered my courage and made it down the canyon. I don’t need to do that again.

#7. If you could give your younger self one piece of advice what would it be?
Listen to your college professor when he tells you, you should pursue writing and take him up on the offer to introduce you to a romance author.

#8. Tell us something funny, sad, embarrassing, whatever, that has happened in your life as writer.
While I was in the early stages of plotting A Family Under the Christmas Tree, my mother passed away. She’d had an inoperable brain tumor for many years so it wasn’t totally unexpected but still a shock. I was with her the day before she passed which was a blessing to be able to say goodbye and tell her I love her. In honor of my mother, I named the grandmother in the story after my mom.

As we move into this busy and sometimes stressful season this verse is a good reminder of the attitude I want to have in all I do.

Identity Unknown was the perfect afternoon suspense read. Lots of action, danger, mystery, on both sides of the border, and of course, a great romance thread. I enjoyed every minute of this exciting book and could hardly put it down. I had fun trying to guess who the villain was, Terri Reed even managed to sidetrack me a bit which was great.

Whether you enjoy stories with a Christmas theme or just love romantic suspense you won't want to miss a second of the thrilling adventure in Identity Unknown.
