The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz
Countdown Day 1George M. Hill's company folded in 1901 leaving the copyright holders, Baum (author) and Denslow (illustrator) to find a a new company. They agreed to have Bobbs-Merril Company from Indianapolis resume publication.
By 1938, over one million copies of the book had been printed. And in 1956, the sales of had reached 3 million copies in print.
The book was illustrated by Baum's friend and collaborator W. W. Denslow, who also co-held the copyright. The design was lavish for the time, with illustrations on many pages, backgrounds in different colors, and several color plate illustrations. In September 1900, The Grand Rapids Herald wrote that Denslow's illustrations are "quite as much of the story as in the writing". W. W. Denslow and L. Frank Baum (Wizard of Oz Author), W. W. (William Wallace) Denslow (Wizard of Oz illustrator) (1856-1915) was a well-known newspaper cartoonist and poster designer when he illustrated Baum's Father Goose, His Book (1899). Following its success, the two men teamed up for Baum's next work, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Because Baum and Denslow each thought that his own contribution was the main reason for the success of the book, their relationship deteriorated. Denslow illustrated only one more Baum book, and after he designed costumes for the 1902 stage version of the Wizard his collaboration with Baum ended. |
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is taking New York City by storm, but for Irish immigrant Annie Gallagher, the book is more than mere entertainment. It's a sweet reminder of her father, a traveling Irish storyteller. After his death, with only a dream and his handwritten stories, Annie flees to America, finding work and friendship at a boardinghouse in the heart of the city. Just as Annie is settling into her new life, a friendly postman begins to show a particular interest in her – and her father's unpublished writing. He suspects the tales may hold a grand secret. But Annie isn't sure she wants to risk sharing her last remnants of home with the world. More trouble brews when authorities make accusations against a fellow boarder and threaten to shut down Hawkins House, jeopardizing everything Annie holds dear. Facing obstacles on all sides, Annie must forge her own path to aid her friend and build a new home to call her own. |
