The High And The Mighty
Starring
John Wayne
When a commercial airliner develops engine problems on a trans-Pacific flight and the pilot loses his nerve, it is up to the washed-up co-pilot Dan Roman to bring the plane in safely.
An interesting psychological story about the actions and reactions of a group of people in danger of crashing on the plane trip from Hawaii to California. Each person has their own reasons for being on the plane, each one has their own personal problems and inner demons.
One of the more interesting things about The High And The Mighty is that it was one of the first disaster-type films set in a passenger plane. Of course, a zillion of them have been made since but none of them really hold a candle to this classic John Wayne movie. Kids will likely find this film a little boring since it is mostly dialogue and nearly the entire movie takes place inside the plane. There are some moments of humor and danger that keep the plot going. The first time I watched this movie was in a hotel when we were visiting family. There wasn't really much to do so I watched as many classic movies as I could find, and that looked interesting. It just so happened that The High And The Mighty was being re-released for the first time in quite awhile, and, since it was a John Wayne movie I decided to watch it. I have to say that I really enjoyed studying the various characters and how they reacted to such a dangerous situation and their interactions with each other. A great old movie that is worth watching and even re-watching.

Quotes
Alsop: She may be put together with paste and flour, but that woman has something. What would you say it was?
Miss Spalding: Practice. Plenty of practice Ben Sneed: Yep, Dan Roman is one guy who had guts enough not to commit suicide. Gonzales: [shipboard radio operator Gonzales is advising the pilots of surface conditions they can expect if they ditch the aircraft] Heavy northwest swells. We're rolling about thirty degrees. Very rough. Keep that ship in the air if you can, boy, it's wet down here! Hobie Wheeler: [acknowledging the transmission from the ship] Roger, Cristobal Trader. We'll try. Gonzales: Attaboy, papa! [last lines] Tim Garfield: So Long. So long, you ancient pelican. |
