Romantic Suspense
Down And Dead, Inc. book 1
by Vicki Hinze
Down And Dead In Dixie -From the back cover- Daisy Grant is in a heap of trouble. She literally stumbles into the middle of a mob turf war between families in Biloxi, Mississippi, and witnesses a family-on-family hit. Now everyone is after her: the family mourning the loss of its eldest son, who wants Daisy to testify; the family protecting its eldest son from a murder rap, who wants Daisy dead so she can't testify; the local authorities bent on building a case despite a mole infestation; and the FBI whose previous witnesses against the families all end up dead before trial. Daisy quickly discovers that to live, sometimes ya gotta die. But when you're not a pro at dying, you can mess up, and when you mess up you'd better get creative fast – even if it means working with seniors who are running on less than a full tank, with a man you find way too attractive and you're determined to protect; and if you're drafted into an underground business you had no idea even existed. Yep, to live, sometimes ya gotta die. And sometimes to get death right, it takes...practice. I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this story, it was the cover and wacky title that caught my attention in the first place, but what I got was one humdinger of a story! I loved it! Seriously, Down And Dead In Dixie would make a great movie. My little movie-in-my-mind was running a mile a minute with this book! Having never been to any of the places in the story I felt transported by V icki Hinze's simple and yet thorough descriptions. | . . |
The story is told in the first person and I just loved getting inside Daisy's head, seeing the story unfold from her viewpoint, and flat out the hilarious way Vicki Hinze has her word things. Daisy is quite a girl! Handed a raw deal after her mother abandoned her and her brother when they were children, sent through the foster care system, having to make a life for herself and her brother, surviving Hurricane Katrina, and all of this is BEFORE the book even starts! Daisy is amazingly not bitter about her past and she even uses those lessons once her wild adventure starts.
This is the fourth book I have read of Vicki's and I really feel that it is her best so far. It was like her creativity was allowed to flow in Down And Dead In Dixie and it all came together in an excellent story. This is not a strictly Christian book but is more of a clean-read which I honestly felt was one of the top things going for it. This reader is anxiously awaiting the release of the next book in the series!
