Tiffany Girl

-From Amazon-
From the bestselling author of It Happened at the Fair and Fair Play comes a compelling historical novel about a progressive “New Woman”—the girl behind Tiffany’s chapel—and the love that threatens it all.
As preparations for the 1893 World’s Fair set Chicago and the nation on fire, Louis Tiffany—heir to the exclusive Fifth Avenue jewelry empire—seizes the opportunity to unveil his state-of-the-art, stained glass, mosaic chapel, the likes of which the world has never seen. But when Louis’s dream is threatened by a glassworkers’ strike months before the Fair opens, he turns to an unforeseen source for help: the female students at the Art Students League of New York. Eager for adventure, the young women pick up their skirts, move to boarding houses, take up steel cutters, and assume new identities as the “Tiffany Girls.” Tiffany Girl is the heartwarming story of the impetuous Flossie Jayne, a beautiful, budding artist who is handpicked by Louis to help complete the Tiffany chapel. Though excited to live in a boarding house when most women stayed home, she quickly finds the world is less welcoming than anticipated. From a Casanova male, to an unconventional married couple, and a condescending singing master, she takes on a colorful cast of characters to transform the boarding house into a home while racing to complete the Tiffany chapel and make a name for herself in the art world. As challenges mount, her ambitions become threatened from an unexpected quarter: her own heart. Who will claim victory? Her dreams or the captivating boarder next door? |

I will make an admission here...this is my first Deeanne Gist book. Yep, it's true. But I am pretty sure it won't be my last.
When I first heard about Tiffany Girl I was totally entranced by the idea. My experience with anything Tiffany had only been a few episodes of Antiques Roadshow and the movie Breakfast At Tiffany's. I found the book to, not only be full of information, but also totally immersive. It's obvious that Deeanne Gist has put A LOT of research into the story, and, in my opinion, is one of the more talented historical fiction authors that I have read. I learned so much about the process of making stained glass, it was so amazing. And I loved how she accurately portrayed the thinking of the era.
When I started the book I thought it was going to take me a few days. It's a BIG book when you think of the usual 350 page novel. But something crazy happened. I started reading and in just a short time 100 pages had gone by. And that's how I read it, in 100 page increments that went by so quickly because totally absorbed in the story. I thought it would take a few days...it only took me a matter of hours.
Readers will fall in love with the boardinghouse residents. They totally steal the show, especially the delightful Mrs. Dinwiddie. Most of my favorite parts of the story take place in the boardinghouse.
It was fascinating to watch Flossie and Reeve as they both change and mature. But life in the boardinghouse starts to strip away Flossie's naiveté and Reeve's surliness. I found it interesting and realistic that they both needed that growing time before they could even begin to think there might be something more than friendship.
I would like to note that Tiffany Girl is more of a clean read rather than specifically Christian fiction. I would probably recommend it for older teens and up.
Flawed characters and rich historical detail blend together into Deeanne Gist's stained glass masterpiece called Tiffany Girl.
Tell Tale Book Reviews gives Tiffany Girl by Deeanne Gist a 4.5 Bark rating.
