I used to read just about every new Amish fiction book that I could get my hands on at the library, and I enjoyed them, but as time went by I noticed that many of them told roughly the same story with slightly different names and locations. And then I discovered Amy Lillard's Amish novels. I still read a number of Amish fiction books each year, mostly from favorite authors who always deliver a great story. Amy Lillard is one of those favorites. There are similarities to the rest of Amish fiction but she also takes on some tough subjects that face Amish and English alike.
Titus Returns not only took on some tough stuff, like grief and depression, but it also was a good example of how the Amish really are just people like everyone else. They don't have some pie-in-the-sky faith that keeps life's problems and pain at bay and that allows them to magically forgive everything. They struggle through heartache like the English do, sometimes falling back on prayer and sometimes less effective means. Titus Returns was a little more serious in tone but it was a book that I could hardly put down. I really wanted to know what would happen next. Would Mandy make the right decision, could Abbie let go of her pain, could Titus forge through his problems?
Titus Returns is another great story in an interesting and very good series. I look forward to Amy Lillard's next trip to Wells Landing...
