When Ethne O’Connor’s brother tells her of father’s unexpected death, Sean asks her to do something she promised herself she’d never do. Come back home. A victim of childhood abuse, Ethne left her father and the small Texas town of Crescent Bluff ten years ago on the night of her high school graduation. She’s determined to end the cycle of abuse and believes the only way to do that is remain single. If she has no husband, she’ll never have children that can be abused. Then she meets Daniel Spenser, a handsome doctor with chocolate-kiss eyes. Daniel understands her past in a way no one else does. He’s lived it. Will Daniel be able to help Ethne break the chains of captivity around her heart? And will God release her from her past, to be free to trust the man she comes to love? |

Interview with Carol James
Inspiration is all around us, but I find I get most of mine from a Christian song, a scripture, or a sermon. So many ideas strike me when I’m outside walking in the park and listening to Christian music.
No Longer a Captive was born from a statement our pastor made during a Sunday morning sermon. In his folksy manner, he said, “Unforgiveness is a prison.” My English-teacher-self knew “unforgiveness” wasn’t even a word, but the meaning of the statement was more moving and convicting than any grammatically correct sentence might have been. Later on, in another service, we read Galatians 3:26, “So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.”
And No Longer a Captive, a story of finding freedom through forgiveness, of being adopted into the family go God was born.
#3. What drew you to write in this particular genre?
I love writing romance for a couple of reasons.
First, I’m a happy ending kind of girl, and most romances have a happy, or at the very
least satisfying, ending. Another reason is because the greatest story of all time is
a romance. It’s the story of a faithful and loving Heavenly Father wooing the hearts of
mankind.
#4. Do you have favorite character(s) in this book?
Don’t tell Ethne, but Daniel’s my favorite.
He’s patient and kind. He’s faithful and understanding. He has a servant’s heart.
And he’s strong.
#5. What do you hope your readers will take away with them when they read this book?
More than anything I want them to see that God’s love overcomes man’s failures and flaws. That God’s love can set us free from the pain of the past.
#6. How did you name your characters?
Most of my heroes have Biblical names. I chose Daniel for my hero’s name for Captive because the Daniel in the Bible was faithful and true to God. And Daniel Spencer has a faithful heart.
Several years ago, I was working in international sales. One of my customers was named Ethne. I had never heard the name before, but something about it enticed me. I looked up the meaning online, and it’s a Celtic name that means “fire.” The heroine in this novel needed to be strong, able to rise above, so I chose Ethne. And, I also gave her red hair to go along with the idea of fire.
#7. Share with us a thought, Bible verse, whatever is on your mind/heart.
The Lord led me to writing at a time in my life when my husband lost his job due to a health issue, and I had to go back to work full time. One morning I was reading my Bible and came across Isaiah 43: 18-19. I had never noticed those verses before. But that day, I knew God was leading me into something different. Some time later, I discovered I was being led into a writing ministry. And that writing was my new thing, my stream in the wasteland. And these verses became the basis of my writing ministry.
do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland.”
