I think mostly because she not only tells a good story but she also does an amazing job with her research and doesn't shy away from the harsher parts of history. Prior to reading The Witness Tree I had heard of the Moravians, mostly a short section or two in my history books, but other than that I knew very little except for a vague memory of there being some Christmas traditions related to them. Denise Weimer did a great job weaving their beliefs and culture, as well as that of the Cherokees, into that fabric of a story that both entertains and teaches. I love learning while reading fiction! In addition to the Moravian history I found the book to be doubly interesting in light of my own somewhat distant Cherokee ancestry.
The Witness Tree is a wonderful historical, with romance, of course. Though, I wouldn't say that the hearts and sparkles type of romance was the focus. No, it is the life lessons that Clarissa and John learn that take the story from shallow historical romance to a deeper level. As I'm sure you can tell, I really enjoyed Denise Weimer's latest release and I look forward to reading more from this talented author...
