Excerpt from Rahab's Courage
He took a swig of water from his pack and let it splash down his beard.
Think. Salmah tested his ankle again and blew out a frustrated breath. How long before Nathan realized he didn’t follow?
He leaned his head back, his ankle throbbing. Minutes dragged by. A farmer rolled a cart through the gate, oblivious to Salmah’s hiding place. The dust settled as footsteps tapped on the stairs above him. The woman in gray. Alone.
Salmah clenched his jaw. Why hadn’t he noted the placement of his foot? Had the woman led Nathan up to the top of the wall to watch Jericho’s soldiers shove him off, or had she done the deed herself?
He didn’t want to think about returning to Joshua and the camp alone. Salmah held his sword at the ready.
The woman casually peered through the inner gate, scanning the crowds and streets, probably searching for him. She had brought a water jug this time— smart girl. She turned her head down the alley between the two massive walls, home for chariots and storage. Her eyes flitted over the waterpots where Salmah hid and back. She stepped closer.
“Stop right there,” Salmah hissed.
