For sixteen years, Laurelin Moore has been keeping a secret. She is a whisperer, and she knows that to reveal her gift now is a dangerous risk. Past whisperers have been exploited for their power. But Ausland’s queen is dead and acknowledging her magic is her only chance at becoming a Rook in the Pentax—a competition that will decide the kingdom’s next ruler.
Laurelin isn’t in it for the crown, though. She’s after the wish that will be granted to the victor. A wish that would save her dying brother, Pippin. But there are dangerous undercurrents to the competition, and Laurelin finds herself at the center of it. She begins to search for answers and discovers a secret with the potential to shatter the entire kingdom.

Over the last three or four months I have been reading a lot of fantasy – from fairytale retellings to dystopian and even a touch of Steampunk. Maybe it's and escape from the world continuing to be turned upside down, maybe it's the need for the good guys to win despite all odds, and maybe it's just love of a good story...
The Whisperer's Wish started out a little slow for me, but, oh, once it got started... Boy, did it! It may be a little under 300 pages but there was no way I was putting it down. I totally gave up on the “just one more chapter” line and simply went with it wherever Janilise Lloyd was taking me.
Janilise Lloyd's worldbuilding is excellent in The Whisperer's Wish. The blend of familiar and fantastical is spot on and it completely captivates you and draws you even farther into the story. And what a vividly painted story it is! The diversity in landscape, peoples, and creatures – plus the Pentax itself – is imaginative and sparks the imagination at the same time.
The Whisperer's Wish is definitely aimed at a YA audience but I can tell you from personal experience that this thirty-something adult enjoyed just as much as she would have as a tween or teen. So, whether you have kids or you are an adult who enjoys a good dystopian fantasy tale I would definitely recommend you check out this story from Janilise Lloyd...it's a good one...
Tell Tale Book Reviews gives The Whisperer's Wish by Janilise Lloyd a 4.5 Bark rating.
