Stowaway
starring
Shirley Temple ■ Robert Young ■ Alice Faye
Ching-Ching (Shirley Temple) gets lost in Shanghai and is befriended by American playboy Tommy Randall (Robert Young). She falls asleep in his car which winds up on a ship headed for America. Susan Parker (Alice Faye), also on the ship, marries Randall to give Ching-Ching a family. Over the years I've seen most of Shirley Temple's most famous movies. Stowaway is by far my favorite, though I'm pretty fond of Wee Willie Winkie , Poor Little Rich Girl, and Susannah Of The Mounties, not to mention her much later The Bachelor And The Bobby-Soxer. Shirley Temple was 8 when she did Stowaway and already had several movies with well-known co-stars under her belt. Her experience shows in this fun and funny movie. She does pretty well with Alice Faye and a very young looking Robert Young of Father Knows Best fame. In typical Shirley Temple fashion Stowaway is charming, cheerful, full of silly songs, and provides a much needed escape from reality. That reality being the Great Depression when the movie first released in 1936 and the COVID-19 pandemic when I just watched it some 84 years later in 2020. I'm an adult now and don't have any kids as an excuse to watch movies like this one. But, I never let that stop me. And honestly, it shouldn't stop you either. There's nothing half so fun as movie-portrayed life on board an ocean-going passenger ship in the 1930s. There are some funny, and even a little snarky, lines that make you laugh out loud. And the courtroom scene at the end is as adorable now as it was then. So, take a little step away from reality and let America's favorite curly-haired little girl sing and dance your troubles away... 1 hour 27 minutes | Principal Cast Shirley Temple...Ching-Ching aka Barbara Stewart Robert Young...Tommy Randall Alice Faye...Susan Parker Eugene Pallette...The Colonel Helen Westley...Mrs. Hope Arthur Treacher...Atkins Allan Lane...Richard Hope J.
