John Wayne ■ Stewart Granger ■ Capucine
Sam and George strike gold in Alaska. George sends Sam to Seattle to bring George's fiancée back to Alaska. Sam finds she is already married, and returns instead with Angel. Sam, after trying to get George and Angel together, finally romances Angel, who, in the meantime, is busy fighting off the advances of George's younger brother, Billy. Frankie is a con man trying to steal the partner's gold claim
I think North To Alaska has to be one of John Wayne's better known movies, it's at least one of the easiest to find. I first saw this movie as a young teen when we bought an entire large gift bag worth of John Wayne movies for my dad.
My family tends to like John Wayne's less violent movies and especially the ones that rely more on comedy. North To Alaska fits that to a T! This movie is a silly romantic comedy - John Wayne style... which also means a good barroom brawl...or two... And North To Alaska has two, one of which is probably the second-most epic mud fights in the movies. McLintock! probably has the best. One of my favorite things about the movie is the theme song also happens to be one of my favorite Johnny Horton song, North To Alaska. I believe the song was done for the movie but I know that it made it on more than one of his albums. A great song for a rollicking good movie, one that no John Wayne fan should miss!

Quotes
Sam McCord: George, a wonderful thing about Alaska is that matrimony hasn't hit up here yet. Let's keep it a free country!
Lena Nordquist: [to Sam] You're a pig-headed no-good and you always were. Michelle: [Sam enters the cabin and picks up his revolver belt] Is he that mad? Sam McCord: He's not even here! Over at another mine, fighting some claim-jumpers. One good thing about that, them shootin' at him will take George's mind off Jenny. Michelle: Yes. A bullet through the head is always the best cure for love. George Pratt: [to Angel after being punched by Sam] Boy, does he love you! |
