Woman On The Run
Starring
Ann Sheridan ■ Dennis O'Keefe
Frank Johnson, sole witness to a gangland murder, goes into hiding and is trailed by Police Inspector Ferris, on the theory that Frank is trying to escape from possible retaliation. Frank's wife, Eleanor, suspects he is actually running away from their unsuccessful marriage. Aided by a newspaperman, Danny Leggett, Eleanor sets out to locate her husband. The killer is also looking for him, and keeps close tabs on Eleanor.
Woman On The Run is what Film Noir was meant to be. It begins with a man innocently walking his dog and witnessing a murder. The final nerve-wracking moments of the film leave the viewer leaning forward, fingernails digging into the furniture, and desperately hoping against hope that there will somehow be a happy ending. In between are tense scenes mixed with humor and one-liners.
This was another one of my YouTube treasures. I'd never seen Ann Sheridan before but I have an antique book that features her as a character. It was a movie from 1950 and I had the time so I decided to give it a whirl. I thought it would be much cheesier, sure, you can figure out most of the who-done-it but you are supposed to, and I was quite pleasantly surprised at the quality. The acting is good and the filming techniques really add to the dark atmosphere. I honestly think that Woman On The Run is going to turn out to be one of my favorites in the Film Noir genre. I love old black/white movies and this is a good one. After we watched it my Mom summed up her opinion in one word, "Effective." And I think that fits perfectly.

Quotes
Inspector Martin Ferris: Don't you eat anything but dog food?
Eleanor Johnson: He's not particular, and I'm lazy, so we eat out. Eleanor Johnson: [In the dark shadows of roller coaster on the deserted beach at night] I don't like this place. Dan Leggett: It's a good spot. I used to come here with my girl when I was a kid. It's more frightening than romantic. It's the way love is when you're young... life is when you're older. |
