the ways to view this powerful movie with the whole family!
Family. If this movie were to be boiled down to one single thought, or word, it would be family. The beautiful, awful, joyful, messiness of family. Family doesn't always come in the shape or size we want, and some days, or even decades, are better than others. But oftentimes what we want and what we need are two very different things. When Last We Spoke explores all of that in a sometimes funny, sometimes sad, sometimes poignant, and sometimes sweet way that will completely tug at your heartstrings.
Three years ago I actually read the book that this movie was based on, and, while there are some differences I can say that this is one of those rare movies that really stays true to the spirit of the book.
As to the movie itself, I thought the production quality was good and Corbin Burnsen was an excellent 'Walt', though, it was a little strange because Melissa Gilbert will forever be Laura Ingalls Wilder in my mind, and not two little girls' grandma. I loved the music chosen for the film and got a real kick out seeing Ruby drive her new car to the sound of The King and I laughed out loud at the midnight raid to the tune of Something Good by Herman's Hermits.
I enjoyed watching When Last We Spoke just as much as I did reading it. Even the tougher parts that I knew were coming were well worth it. And I won't admit to feeling a teensy bit teary-eyed. When Last We Spoke tugged at my heart, my emotions, and my thoughts in a way few movies do. If you have slightly older kids this movie would be a great one to sit down and watch with them, because, as I said before, it's all about family...
