This was the second book that cemented my love affair with Melanie Dickerson's fairytale retellings. I'd read a few secular juvenile and YA fairytale retellings over the years, and even enjoyed them, but The Merchant's Daughter and its predecessor really opened my eyes to the genre's real potential within the realm of Christian fiction.
Melanie Dickerson's particular brand of combining well known fairytales with medieval historical romance is pretty much wonderful. As with her succeeding titles, The Merchant's Daughter strikes a good balance of familiar fairytale and fresh new story. There is no doubt that this book is a Beauty And The Beast story but it's just not the Disney tale you remember, no, this is so much better.
